Fun Fact: The director of this show said in a interview that Wolverine was forced to have an Australian accent because the executives thought Crocodile Dundee was a real popular movie at the time.

This is the same team that made up the classic X-Men arcade roster. The huge cabinet with six controllers. Classic.
Bro! I remember being an eight-year-old at a kid's pizza arcade (like Chucky Cheese) in 1992 and playing alongside two kids and two adults. The adults were smoking as they played with both hands on the controls and the cig in their mouths. Thinking back that was wild that was allowed in a kids-oriented business.
That arcade game was based solely on this one episode, there were no more. It's crazy how that happened.
I saw this in real time back in 1989. I was a senior in high school. I was big into comic books then. I was so excited I recorded it on my VCR. I re watched it over and over. Great memory.
I watched this when I was 4 or 5 when CBS would randomly air in 93. I was so confused by the fact that the X-Men looked so different. This show made me start collecting comics because I was curious to see how their looks had changed over the years.

we may not have gotten an X-Men series in the 80s but without this pilot, we may not have gotten the X-Men Animated series we all know today

I always felt that this pilot was way better and more accurate - with exception to Wolverine’s accent - than the 90’s Fox series. Moreover, the animation in this pilot was far superior.

I’ll never understand how this pilot didn’t become a series. The next day at school, it was literally all that my classmates and I could talk about. We couldn’t wait for the next episode, but it never showed up. This, and the cancellation of “Mighty Orbots”, makes me question the wisdom of ‘80s TV execs.

The series never became a show in part because of Marvel's financial troubles at the time. They were in such a financial hole that they sacrificed a 13th episode of Robocop to fund the making of this episode

I was in 7th or 8th grade when it came out and I loved it and didn’t care about the Australian accent as probably most 11 year olds would not . Only grown a$$ men get their panties in a bundle over a cartoon that’s made for little kids and of course a cartoon and movies will never be 100 percent faithful to canon
Another fun fact: some of the voice actors for this would make appearances in the animated series later: most notably the voice actor for Juggernaut who voiced him in the 90s as well

Actually, Ms. Marvel moved him in X-Men The Animated Series just before Rogue drained her powers in the episode "A Rogue's Tale".

I had this on VHS in the ‘90s. We had like a total of 10 VHS cassettes, so my brother and I would just end up watching them over and over when there was nothing good on the 3 TV channels we had. It was a rotation of this, Temple of Doom, Terminator 2, and a few others. I still remembered the theme song and all the lines of dialogue from this, lol.
I couldn't help laughing every time Wolverine said something. So distracting.

If this would’ve came out in mid 1980s, it would’ve been successful. But, we would’ve probably never got X-Men The Animated Series in 92.

They'd work way better in the upcoming Marvel owned X-Men in the MCU, than the brightly coloured versions from later comics.

The costumes were just as accurate in the nineties cartoon, they were just accurate to a different period. I would agree that these eighties era designs are preferable, though.
Yes. Cyclops wears his hood for a reason. It's very easy to burn his hairs and scalp with those rays.

According to story editor Rick Hoberg he gave Wolverine an Australian accent due to the Australian fad going on at the time and it was planned for Logan to be Australian in the comics but hes still Canadian till this day
Disney needs to make this an animated series, 20 episodes a year, based on when Kitty joined the X-Men people would love a faithful adaptation
Disney needs to stay tf away from my beloved X-Men. During MCU Phase 3, I couldn't wait for a reboot. Now, I wouldn't trust them not to foul it up.

I read somewhere (I think it was Wizard in the early 2000s?) that Marvel was looking to retcon Wolverine as an Aussie and told the voice actor the same, then they saw the cartoon, saw that it was really lame, and completely backtracked.
It was a cancelled storyline, the comics were planned to follow this.
I was expecting Magneto to wrap up his phrases with, "THIS, I COMMAND!!!!" LOL.

There's aspects of this that are simultaneously the best and the very worst. On the good side, Kitty Pryde makes a natural viewpoint character and the team composition is nearly flawless- I'd swap Dazzler for Rogue, but otherwise perfect. But that damned Australian accent on Wolverine!

You can so tell this was most of the sunbow cast of voices with the animation studio of Galaxy Rangers they did explosions like no other studio at the time so anime I love it

A salute to the now deceased Stan Lee,this excellent adventure of the xmen is another example of how brilliant he'll always be creating such incredible characters and a marvelous universe. Long live Stan!
I watched this the one and only time it aired back in 1989 where I lived in NJ. I was 7. Every day after school I always watched Spider-Man And His Amazing Friends, The Incredible Hulk, Robocop and Dino Riders. This forever made me hooked onto the X-Men.
I can't hear Xavier's voice without expecting him to freak out over a wooden gun.

Oh yeah! How ironic that John Stephenson played Magneto at first then played the good guy Professor X.
Maybe in the next episode, had they made one, when Kitty gets her uniform, she'd tell Xavier that it fits wonderfully. He'd tell her, "It's made of a special fabric to fit you nicely and to correspond with your powers whenever you use them. All the X-men's uniforms are. A man named Reed Richards actually told me how to make this fabric."
Am rewatching there 90’s series , apart from the other observations made it seems Kitty Pryde was the template annoying kid for Jubilee who came later . Dazzler was featured in 2 of 90’s Hellfire Club episodes. Animation is good .
Dazzler had the first mutant solo series, barring Namor... It was direct market sold many copies

I don't know about Juggernaut, but IIRC the idea of Magneto's helmet blocking Xavier's telepathy didn't come along until the early '00s

If you go back further to the cartoon 'Spider Man and his Amazing Friends', they had an episode that gave Firestar's backstory, and also featured guest appearances from the X-man as they fought Juggernaut. They gave Wolverine an Aussie voice in that episode too.
He needs Tugger as a side-kick.
Theme was amazing, story was amazing, this is what made me love the XMEN when I was a kid.

Fun fact: this is what got me interested in comics in middle school. From the time this came out to the release of the 1990's X-Men series, I was well versed in the source material... So I was like, "wtf is Morph?!"

I remember grabbing this on VHS at the local Kay-Bee Toys when the toy line came out echoing this lineup was on the shelves.
I wish the animation quality was this high for most of the X-Men TAS we got later. After the 3rd or so year the animation became very elastic looking and super rubbery...this was a promising 'pilot' take though!

If Marvel hadn’t been in such a financial mess and this would have become a series, it’s easily conceivable that they would have changed Wolverine’s backstory in the comics to match the Australian accent of the TV series.

This is the perfect addition to the already marvelous marvel animated universe. Unfortunate this series never materialized. This is a great pilot to a xmen series. It's action packed n it displayed perfectly the powers of each mutant. It's a true delight for all xmen fans!

I thought the artwork looked very similar. Some scenes I think were even used in the 90's X-men.
This was done in Japan. They took their time with cartoons back then. We always rushed everything.

Epic! They made an entire 4 player arcade game based solely on this one episode. Fuck an Avenger. The children of the X were, are and always will be top dogs.

I remember a local comic book shop used the introduction to this as a commercial, but they redubbed the voices to talk about the store. I have no clue if that's even remotely legal, but it's stuck in my head. I even remember Wolverine saying "These ain't yer daddy's comics, kid!" or something like that, hahaha.
It's a shame that videos with Heart and Beautiful art will never be Done the same way again 😢
In no way shape or form was this superior to the x-men animated series. That Wolverine alone disqualifies it.
This one pilot resulted in the Konami arcade game, making it objectively, unequivocally the best X-Men animation.
