Before Sky took over another popular sport aswell.Made people buy dishes,subscription and ppv.I suppose the better outcome of it was boxers were paid more whilst getting punched on the head and had better opportunities.

Watching nigel on itv fight night is why I love boxing, even the tune makes the hairs go up on back of my neck, great times great fighter, gave us Britain's best performance in the ring against maclanan

What a great fight, these two boxers fought valiantly and such a shame there had to be a loser but all honours to Nicky for the show he put on and well done to Nigel for the win.

Brave performance by piper, looking at his face at the end of the fight sums up what it must have been like fighting Benn. Relentless punching and aggressive pressure.

I remember watching this live on TV. No frills and over hyping by the broadcaster, just simple old fashion boxing. Great effort from Piper, he had the right game plan and plenty of heart, but Benn's work rate and power got the better of him in the end.
Great boxing from both men. Nicky Piper- what a gutsy performance, it was obvious Nigel respected him. Fighting Nigel Benn must have been a nightmare- you would know that you are going to have to face and stand up to relentless, unceasing pressure and aggression. You can tell Nigel Benn served in the infantry, which imbues an aggression and determination to win in those who have experienced it. He was the Staffordshire Bull Terrier of the boxing world- always took the fight to his opponent with relentless tenacity and aggression. He was always extremely dangerous- especially when hurt he would just double down and go all out. RESPECT to both fighters here- a great watch!

I was in the Cardiff Heath hospital in 92 visiting my wife who was ill. Nicky Piper walked out of the ward into a lift. I think it was after this fight. I heard he had fluids removed from his ear after the fight.

@@dancmkiii8461 its true and ridiculous but Benn had extremely good discipline and somehow kept himself in shape, Sakuraba also smoked cigarettes the man who beat Gracie in a 90 minute epic match and then fought later that day taking Vovchanchyn to overtime

I was at a boxing do early noughties...nicky and glyn mccrory were the guest of honour.....I remember asking Mr piper how hard benn hit.....mate he hit me that hard I had to pay to get back in...

Jim Watt really grinds my gears. Never forgive the BS he blabbed when Benn stopped McClellan. Savagely saying Gerald bottled it & was a quitter. It was abundantly obvious that something was wrong...his gum shield held out..and the rapid blinking.

You’ve gotta have balls the size of bus to go toe to toe with Nigel Benn. I remember it being a bit of a mismatch when the fight was arranged but Piper took it to 11 rounds. Fair play.

Me: I did a prediction on Luke Fury type of excuse back then, I sent a memo & a message in a bottle that I bottled fighting a guy 5” shorter than me similar weight… then I remembered I was a good friend to his youngest brother @ Loxford when I was in Nigel’s presence I was intimidated let alone having to fight the man!

Ha! I watched that fight live and remember it well for two reasons: the shortness and brutality of the KO and how funny Chantler looked - a veritable bean pole. Benn was great to watch in his prime. Far better than being in a boxing ring with him.

Nicky Piper was too nice a guy for boxing. Good fighter but lacked the killer instinct.

@pauliepaul3697 yes, and his analysis was a bit suspect. Nigel dodged the majority of piper's puches for the first few rounds, but this was never acknowledged.

The one thing i do not understand in boxing is that when there is a big fight it goes straight to box office and cost 30 quid to watch but within minutes is free to watch on youtube

Benns power was not as good as it was at middleweight,he looked not as powerful but thats no disrespect to Piper,Benn did produce later on but he did seem to struggle during the fight at this weight.Piper could have knocked Benn out,he had the power to do it.
I agree. Benn was never the same force at super and piper was suited to light heavy which balanced things out a bit. However, around that time in Benn's career, his defensive skills had improved since his loss to Eubank and when he was hit with a decent shot, he knew how to hold on and regroup. I know Jim Watt was harsh with Benn in this fight, but the majority of Piper's shots weren't landing that cleanly, which was credit to Benn's ability to evade and ride the shots as he was coming in and then quickly switch to the body and throw the upper cuts as the taller man leant forward. I think the plan was to wear him down to he body and than take him out with head shots in the later rounds when his hands had come down a bit. Piper gave a good account of himself and held his own, but lacked world class technical ability to cause Benn any serious problems.

Watching Nigel Benn fights were a pleasure as he represented British boxing with class and fought all comers, yet we have the likes of fraudster and gimmick Tyson Fury, who is an absolute embarrassment in not wanting to fight for the undisputed championship due to cowardice. And what’s worse, is that some people actually rate him!

Dafuq are you talking about? Benn was WBC Super middleweight champ for four years with 9 consecutive defenses and he holds the record in the weight class, the same amount Monzon had as WBC middleweight champ.Also Benn beat Barkley who himself beat Hearns. Benn was a beast.
