Guitar Pilgrim great video! Really enjoyed it. However, I would like to learn a little bit more about the fact that he uses 5 strings instead of six. Do you know why he plays the guitar that way and in what way it kicks ass?
I had the pleasure of spending 10 hours with the Stones, and two of those in private conversation with Keith whilst every one had fallen asleep. The coolest guy I have ever met, super smart, very humble and full of spirit :-))) We talked about everything from Bedouins to living in New England. When we finally started talking about Music and I asked him about songwriting he said its all about the rhythm, you gotta feel it not just play it! You were spot on there Pilgrim! Huge fan of your feeling my friend!!
Thank you for this. To me Keith Richards is the quintessential rock and roll guitarist. I can name many players who are technically better, but none who have his pure yet dirty sound and feeling.
Yeah...and HE'S hardly ever boring, which is a hell of a lot more than you can say for a lot of the flavor of the day "greatest rock quitarist ever" that have come and gone in the time Keith's been around. For the most part, the only thing they were "masters" of was taking an electric guitar and MAKING IT BORINGGGGG!!!! Quite the accomplishment.
He has the good sense and taste to play something that compliments a song and not a bunch of SHIT that overpowers it. The song always comes first with him, not his ego.
Once again... Simple is good, easy to listen to, easy to understand, easy to remember, easy to recognize.. Good for our ears. Keith teaches. Thanks Guitar Pilgrim.
The Stones back in the day were so excitng live because they were so tight in their looseness. Charlie layed down the beat to Micks arse movements, keith played behind the beat, bill played ahead of it and Mick T painted over the whole thing with great colours. Not many bands are tight enough to be that loose without falling apart.
Lots of guys can shred. Only Keith Richards can play an open G chord over and over and turn it into one of the most iconic and instantly recognizable riffs in the history of popular music.
Keith’s the greatest rhythm guitarist. His guitar is what drove the band. Normally bands follow the drummer but The Rolling Stones followed Keith. I prefer Keith’s playing to any technically better players. And I agree the timekeepers are a little bit shite 😂
Playing Keith's part in a cover band I came here expecting nothing, with so many musicians not getting the Keith thing. You nailed it and demonstrated it. Just one thing, I wouldn't have taken Gimme Shelter for the Open G demo... Keith plays it on regular tuning on stage and studio version in open E. Well done , thx, I learned something.
Keith IS the Human Riff. No one, no one has made more timeless riffs that Mr Richards. Woulda loved to have seen you throw in 'Cant You Hear Me Knocking' I have to say, Ive seen many talented players do videos similar to what you do, but so far I have seen none that 'get it' the way you do. Kinda hard to explain with the written word, but like you alluded to Keiths swagger and that special ingredient he adds, you understand just how incredible cool that part is. Whereas most players get lost in the theory, tone, gear and the rest. Great job.
This is a beautiful video in many ways: you are completely sensitive to the feel of KR’s playing, you don’t fall for technical sophistication as an ideal in itself, you emphasise the song and you suggest how Keef’s swagger has a lot to do with the sense listeners get of his playing. He believes in what he is doing and the force of his commitment is hard to ignore. On top of that he has a great partnership with Mick, who is often a really superb lyricist. Great to feel your genuine admiration of the Stones coming though. Thank you.
Mick is really underrated as a lyricist. Worldly wise and street-smart, occasionally reaching for the poetic or the profound in just the right measure. No wonder Martin Scorsese loves using the Stones in his movies.
Marcin Jaskolski I agree absolutely. Often the words aren’t noticed because the riffs and the performances are so mesmerising! Mick learned the idioms of blues lyric writing early then gave them a British twist. Keith did something similar with blues licks.
This is one of my all time favorite live albums. Keith is a really well rounded player with both rhythm and lead playing and his dynamics are incredible and this makes for a great player with great phrasing! Your channel rocks man! I love it!
I am 54 years old and did not really take guitar playing that serious until about 6 years ago,as such I was not in touch with the guitar community that much. But I was under the impression that there were certain guitarists that ALL guitar players considered to be "great" . Since 2013 when I got more involved I am shocked to find out that prior belief is dead wrong! Page, Hendrix, Richards, Clapton, EVH, Slash, Frehley, Beck, Moore and any other of the "greats" all seem to have their share of nay sayers. When I read comments like "Jimmy Page sucks on the guitar" I am blown away by that! Keith Richards sure seems to get a lot of hate as well. Now I have never been a big Stones fan but I always considered Richards to be a great guitar player. Even when Mick Taylor was in the band, it was more Richards that drove the melody of the band and let's face it, the melody is what makes or breaks a song.
Beautiful. Thank you for highlighting the genius of Keith Richards. I, too, am a huge fan and listen carefully to his style. But, you took it to a whole new lever.
Wow!... You're a piano maestro as well! Brilliant!!!... I love Keith Richards and his riffs and creative composition. There's a reason(s) the Stones have had such success and longevity. This video explored one of them... Oh, I agree with your album choices and comments, but my favorite overall Stones album is Sticky Fingers. My favorite Stones song and within my list of Top 10 songs of all time, is Gimme Shelter, but they have so many great songs... Another excellent video!... :-)
Guitar Pilgrim, I can honestly say you are absolutely and incredibly unique as a gift to "The Universal Language", music! Talent beyond measure with rhythm and feel that leaves onlookers and listeners in awe. You should blow your fans away with 1 or 2 of your own creations. All the best, Pilgrim
I live in Ireland, and your playing is not shite. Top video as always, Thom . I always learn something new about this confounding six string music box! Keep up the good work. ( feck)
Keith Richards is a genius guitar player, his riffs and lead breaks will make you're hair stand on end, Paul Kossof was another genius, my God that vibrato.
Also guys, talkin about Keith’s riffs. Perhaps the greatest intro riff in rock n roll history is off the sticky fingers album. The track is called can’t you hear me knocking. Just my opinion hah. Give it a hard listen though guys. Those riffs are played with so much Keefness ! Every time I hear that track the hairs on my neck stand up lol. I listen to that track and I just sit and wonder like damn how did he come up with this stuff. His riffs combined with a little Jagger swagger and they turn the world on. Can’t beat that ! so gnarly. Really like this channel subscribed !
what sets yours apart from other guitar video is a higher level of taste in music in your interpretation of pop music. It literately feels great watching this ...
Thanks Pilgrim. Great video on yaya's out. My favourite live album period and inspired me to pick up the guitar myself. Hope you will do a video on Jerry Garcia in the future...
I really enjoyed this, thanks. By the way, Keith uses Nashville style on Gimme Shelter, which is effectively stringing a 6-string guitar with the “other” strings of a 12-string, if that makes sense.
You rock man, your deep passion and understanding of music makes you the best out there by a country mile, incredible talent, every player of anything should stop by and take a gander at your videos especially for your impressive knowledge of feel in music, thanks man🙏👏👏👏✌
This is great stuff. I was once going to be a rock and roll guitar player. My teacher had me work with Berkley music theory and then went to a classical guitar. Then came the acoustic. By the time I got to my crazy electric I had a different Idea on what I wanted to play. I like it all. Thank you.

Outstanding video. I have been a huge Keith fan forever. You describe and demonstrate the essence of his brilliance perfectly. I already "knew" everything you said but I could never have explained it or certainly not have demonstrated like you just did. Nice job my friend, nice job!
I really like it how you put the Stones where they belong! It is a shame how many musicians look down on them. And yet, the Stones are still one of the few bands who can sell out whole soccer / sports arena's all over the world.
I think the one song that just pulls 60’s music out of the first half of the decade is “Satisfaction”….after that amazing fuzz riddled tone nothing was ever the same again…
I love this series. You break things down and explain them so well, and a talented musician to boot. Maybe you can breakdown some classic reggae guitarists some day.
Love me some Keef! I've got a Tele minus the low E string permanently set up in Open G, and I even turned the neck pickup back to front for the full Micawber effect, doesn't sound any different but sure looks cool.

Great point made that things don't have to be overly technical are super fast to be good. I think Keith Richards was one of the best to understand that.
The rolling stones sound is one that was always so elusive and hard to get close to sounding like for me. I like how you describe the rhythm vs melody, I've always noticed the difference in sound but never understood why.
That was marvelous .... hope KEITH sees this. Love the way you break things down. Your piano playing is as wonderful as your guitar playing. You are an incredible addition to my CZcams video subscriptions.
Great video as usual, thanks. Keith is definitely a fantastic guitar player who change the way we look at guitar even if he's not as fancy as many others of his era.

Probably because I'm still only a late beginner and am not that far down the road in figuring out my phrasing and things. Thanks for providing these great insights, really appreciated. I can't think of anyone that explains them as well :)
Grea job on the guitar and production. I've heard that Keith uses an 'Open E' configuration - E string removed so A is the available string. This wasn't in your show so it probably deserves it's own. Let's get on it Pilgrim! We're looking forward to it.
This was pure gold. Thank you. Let It Bleed is my favorite. I chatted with a guitar player whose band opened for the Stones 3 times. His favorite was Beggars Banquet.
Keith Richards use a method that many young guitarist today don't even know anything about and that is the blues "call and response" method. Another great aspect of his playing is his ability to flirt with the beat.

This guy is a natural born musician/teacher...thanks!
This was pure gold. Thank you. Let It Bleed is my favorite. I chatted with a guitar player whose band opened for the Stones 3 times. His favorite was Beggars Banquet.
Rhythm of the solo! Brilliant. Explains so much.
You should make this about Brian May. Keep up the good work!
Shut the fuck up about Brian may when a video about Keith is playing

Will you ever do one on Carlos Santana? Btw great channel!
Santana, yes definitely!
Keith Richards use a method that many young guitarist today don't even know anything about and that is the blues "call and response" method. Another great aspect of his playing is his ability to flirt with the beat.
