The Sleeping Beauty - Tchaikovsky - Anthony Dowell as Carabosse - The Royal Ballet - 23 Nov 94

- Anthony Dowell's matchless performance of the evil fairy Carabosse in the Prologue of Tchaikovsky's ballet 'The Sleeping Beauty'. Dowell is the personification of Disease and Death -- a visit from whom is all mothers' worst fear for her baby -- in this great en travesti rôle. He completely avoids the usual much-less powerful camp effect of other iterations. (The divine Monica Mason is also exemplary.) The part was first danced by Enrico Cecchetti on 15 January 1890 at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. Cecchetti is a storied pillar of ballet history and a contributor to the Royal Ballet's DNA via his work with Ninette de Valois.
William Tuckett and Elizabeth McGorian as the King and Queen are impossibly beautiful and young (unlike in Perrault), and give deeply-felt, human performances, not the stiff cartoon cut-outs seen elsewhere. No King and Queen approach their interpretation, either. They are anguished parents everywhere, vulnerable, not royals aloof from universal experience; the Queen represents all women, in all times. Thus, they wear no crowns. Perhaps the most beautiful moment is when Carabosse collapses before a majestically serene Lilac Fairy, the power of good prevailing -- at least for now -- over darkness.
'The Sleeping Beauty' ballet is about our deepest fears and dreams, a shimmering constellation of symbols and metaphors. Only Love, awakened -- the highest form of Beauty -- can save us.
Benazir Hussain -- La Fée des Lilas
Jane Burn -- Canari qui Chante (Canary) -- The Fairy of Eloquence
Genesia Rosato -- Candide (Candour) -- The Fairy of Purity
Deborah Bull -- Coulante, Fleur de Farine (Wheat Flour) -- The Fairy of Vitality
Gillian Revie -- Miettes qui Tombent (Breadcrumbs) -- The Fairy of Generosity
Belinda Hatley -- Violente (Temperament) -- The Fairy of Passion
David Drew -- Cattalabutte
Conductor Barry Wordsworth deserves great praise for a driving, powerful orchestral performance.
But if anyone knows the names of the young Messenger, or Carabosse's two main attendants, please leave their names in the Comments section. I couldn't find them!

This production of 'Sleeping Beauty' is my all-time favorite! Anthony Dowell is marvelous as Carabosse, the costumes (especially the King and Queen) are exquisite, and the dancers have an unparalleled elegance!💖💖
I completely agree. This production lives up to Tchaikovsky's incredible score.
Ugh!!! I love his version of Carabosse- it was soooo wicked. The way he acts out the ages, looks over and says "nahh, even that's too evil for me" and raises the age a little. hahaha I love it
I’m not well acquainted with ballet mime - where is this part ?
@@Roheryn100 around 4:04 is when Carabosse says (in ballet pantomime) “that baby is little now, but she will grow and grow”, you can see there where the age & years are acted out
@@whatdoyousupposeAh yes, I see now. ❤ This part is so fully mimed out and explains so much . This video was helpful. czcams.com/video/n9caxHUZcVg/video.htmlsi=HWPb8HlB9zbrhNT2
I have watched probably a dozen other productions and so often in Russian versions the King and Queen are total clowns and just stand there . But these two seem a true couple and very caring and loving.
This Lilac Fairy really explains what will happen. Others just start waving Bye Bye to Carabosse. 😄
Love when the Lilac Fairy just smiles at 6:30 and gestures “Nope. Not on MY watch !”
Carabosse “Wait -WHAT …???”
@@Roheryn100Lo! Right? It's fabulous.
During my 65 years I' ve seen this ballet done by a couple of companies - both live, on DVD and via YT. This - imho - is the most fascinating and convincing interpretation of Carabosse I've seen so far. Great acting !
Extraordinary interpretation of this Dancer of which one does not speak enough.
And yet...what a talent, what expressiveness!
He was one of these great Artists of whom one says that they did not need make-up.
This extract is a jewel.
He was always wonderful. What a delight to see him in this miming role!
the character of the character is wonderfully conveyed, BRAVO from Lithuania
I like male Carabosse more than the female, this has to be one of the best interpretation
This is wonderful. A great piece of history recorded for all time. Sir Anthony Dowell as Carabosse pieceless.💖
Fantastic! I've been looking for footage of AD in this for ages. He's wonderfully deranged.
This carabosse is really having fun.
The choice of a short dress give to Carabosse a disturbing androginy. A masterpiece, thanks to Sir Dowell, too.
Never speck, never "too" falsely feminine ... elegant but scary! 🥰🥰🥰
My first Sleeping Beauty ballet 🌹
Anthony Dowell was brilliant as Carabosse, far better than the women who usually downplay the role and as a result lose the enormous evil of the character.
The acting in this is great! Not so sure if I like the sets and costumes, both are beautiful.. but together it's kind of busy. I definitely would like to see this version though; it looks really interesting.
He may be too old now, but if the Royal Ballet ever brings back Bournonville's Sylphide I'd love to see him as Madge. He'd be such fun in the fortune-teller scene.
He's too old to do it now. He only coaches.
обожаю прекрасного танцовщика Антона Доуэла
can someone put the whole production on CZcams please? it's my fav!!!!
He is really excellent in this. He does look like Ninette de Valois, maybe she inspired him...
Glad I'm not the only person who thought that. Very naughty if intentional!
@@jessaglenny Yes, but I like him!
@@susannevollmer2347 Me too. He's amazing.
@@martinmeng970 I had to look up a picture of her. Oh my goodness, you are right !!!😆😆
Maria Björnson (Bjørnson but still) designed the visuals! Give he big credits, yall!
Oh my goodness WHERE did you get a copy of this one! It's my favourite & I cannot ever find a trace of it anywhere. Thanks for uploading!
Ah...the early '90s, where no villain was complete without finger extensions.
Anthony Dowell is brilliant.
Very ghosty...the scene changed into Draculas castle a bit?
Elizabeth McGorian is the only one still with the company
Christopher Saunders, who danced the Lilac Fairy's cavalier in this, is also still with the company. He recently played the King alongside Elizabeth McGorian
@@hanselm.s.6018 He's the rehearsal director and senior ballet master. Apologies I forgot about Christopher.
@@johnpirie4804 And she is still as exquisite as ever !
@@hanselm.s.6018 Oooo didn’t know that. He is the poor put upon King in Alice’s Adventures !
Реально страшно становится от такой "феи".Жуть пробирает.Макияж просто находка для ужастиков.

Yawn…
@@Roheryn100 And another thing, how would you know how old you think I'm getting for believing in fairies? I've never even outgrown them!
@@katiehickey4539 You are boring. All you do is go on…and on…and on….about the same thing. Ad nauseum.
Go design your own production.
@@Roheryn100 How dare you falsely accuse me of such things? You don't even know me and I don't even know you! Now take back every mean thing you think about me, or else! I'm not boring and I don't add nauseam!
@@Roheryn100 And even if I was being boring, how would you know it was on purpose? I have just about as much right and reason to voice my concerns, comments, and opinions about everyone as everyone else. Where are your manners and netiquette? I'm not the enemy here.
