We in Brazil have always asked for an AC game set in Brazil. There is a movie called Besouro from 2009 about a slave capoeira fighter, that would be such a great background for the story.

Now imagine, the main character was a chinese man. How would you brazilians feel? The problem isnt that Yasuke is in the game. The problem is that they made him a main character. If I was japanese, i would be pissed as well. The main character of every AC game should be someone of that culture. People think we are complaining just because he's black. But everyone loves Bayek from origins. Who was complaining because he's black? Apart from Ezio, Bayek is one of the most loved AC protagonist. This just feels like forced diversity. We know it when we see it. Whether or not the man was a sumurai or not is a non issue for me. This is a AC game first of all. Game should be about stealth. Playing as a big black samurai in japan is not what AC is about.

@@whysosrs5534 I think that every big media company is trying to be more diverse, to different degrees of success. Although i do believe that sometimes it can be either "forced or preachy our maybe phoned in", i also believe that this push to see more varied people in media, will have a good result. I just think that Ubisoft saw the oportunity to have an interesting character. I mean, how many triple A games do you believe would have come out with a black samurai as a protagonist? Also don't forget about Naoe, the japanese ninja that is ALSO a main character. In the last few years we had Both Ghost of Tsushima and Rise of the Ronin with Japanese protagonists, it's not like they are in dire need of representation of their own culture at the moment.

I just wanted to touch on the quick issue you touched on too. Most Conservatives call themselves “Christians” that doesn’t mean they actually are Christian.
Being a Christian is about belief in the finished works of Jesus. Not standing against certain political groups.
This “where was God during slavery” is something I’ve heard often, but our people are no longer slaves.
It took good Christian, God fearing people to allow slaves to hide in their homes when they were hunted. It took actual Christian people to aid in the abolishment of slavery. God touched their hearts and used them for our ancestors’ benefit. That’s where God was.
God doesn’t just immediately destroy evil, he gives them plenty of time to repent before they pass away. If they don’t, they surely won’t see Heaven. Think about these things.

God allows slavery and all of the evil to take place. He doesn't allow people to repent, they never had a choice, their lives are mapped out before an all knowing God. If you're religious fine, and or simply have a belief in a higher power then fine, but don't pretend that any of it is nothing less than illogical.

I’m not a believer, an atheist actually. But doesn’t this all seem mighty convenient? God never shows up, but he’s all powerful and all knowing. Doesn’t show up for slavery, doesn’t show up for children with cancer, doesn’t show up for the kids dealing with famine. It’s all convenient, because there is no god. I’m not even trying to be disrespectful here. I hate to say it, but you’re no different than 90% of religious folk. It’s all just indoctrination. @@hotcoldman77 oh nice! I hope you enjoy! For me well i just wasn’t a big fan of the way they decided to do some things in it, like how they chose to execute prioritizing stealth, making combat feel bad, it feels like your hitting enemies with a feather, and idk I just felt like that’s an odd way to prioritize stealth.
I don’t want to spoil the game for you, so I’ll just say there was story stuff that I just wasnt too enamored with, things not being as fleshed out or as impactful as they could have been if more attention had been given to it. Personally feel like a lot of the characters are quite forgetable, Stuff like that, overall it’s still good and I like a lot of individual things in it, but it really does feel like a repurposed DLC to me, which stinks because it originally was that and then they opted to make it a full game.
What’s cool is that it made me at least change my opinion on Basim. In Valhalla I didn’t like him too much he felt off and his whole scheme to kill Eivor and Sigurd rubbed me the wrong way. Seeing him younger and how he started out, seeing his growth, really made me like the character a lot more so that’s a plus! And with alot mechanics they introduced I found interesting. So overall for me it was a 7/10, it was okay, not the best and for me left a lot to be desired but over all an enjoyable experience nonetheless

I am gonna take moderate stance on this so just listen to me a bit. I understand the representation aspect and why to some people making a game about this kind of character is important. There is though this flipside that Yasuke was a Retainer/Samurai/Bodyguard/Goon of Oda Nobunaga and to Japanese people Nobunaga well... He is not really a nice dood. You could say he is a bit bad i would say. He is always shown as a "demon lord" with guns, because he bought guns from the westerners to win the war. So his retainers like Yasuke and Ranmaru Mori are not seen too good light there.
There has been some positive representations of Yasuke and some negative, because in the end that is what fiction does, but he was still you know killing people to a person who is an equivalent to some hated dictators in Europe that well are not seen in good light either. So making him a hero of a game... Well it might rub people a wrong way. I understand it is a fiction, but you know.
I think if this would have been some random new dood it would have been mostly fine to people, but using this historical character who was Nobunagas samurai again Nobunaga is deemed as an really evil person so that is a bit odd to people who has roots from those families who fought against him. i also understand this game will be fiction so he probably will not remain as Nobunagas goon and probably even joins forces with Akechi Mitsuhide to take him down.
I understand the both sides of the argument and well it is kinda hard to talk about it, because nobody likes moderate takes, because it is either you are with me or against me these days. I hope the game is fun and people who want this kind of characters get more of these kind of characters. I also understand the culture erasing aspect, because we just found out recently as Finnish people that we where half- Asians, because our root comes from Mongolia and all our culture was erased by Swedish kingdom who forced us the bible. So i understand why people would be pissed about that, but to me it is in the past.
Thank you for bearing with me and i hope you enjoy the game.

When I seen people typing "No foreigner could ever attain thy Title Samaurai. Williams Adams in Nioh was different then Yusuke because he was a British man and thy Highest ranking Samurai who actually existed."
I knew exactly what kinda of party this was 🤣.

We had Nioh and Nioh 2, theres nothing wrong with historical fiction.
the reason i dont like the new AC
is because they were 10 years too late to finally release the Ninja Japan Assassin's Creed ive wanted since i was 14 years old.
so many better alternatives in gaming have come out in the past years since, and now suddenly Ubisoft thinks they can come in and wow me with nothing on the table.
it is a blatant marketing tactic to say " oh look, black people, you can be Yasuke, hes in the game!" the same way I was excited to be a White Germanic looking Samurai in Nioh 1.
Now granted, we know Ubisoft did with the intention of DEI shoving their heel into their balls, but Koei Tecmo is just as guilty, they did it knowing a white guy would be more interested in playing Nioh as a white samurai. but this isnt entirely true of a tactic anymore, as Sekiro and Tsushima both have you play very tradtional and generic japanese men as Ninjas, and yet people still loved the game just as much.
Yasuke feels a bit forced, like, his plot isnt entirely central to the core plot of AC because AC story, mission by mission, doesnt exist.
the biggest problem we have is that we know Ubisoft is not by any stretch of the imagination genuine.
the only thing Genuine in Ubisoft is their enslaved devs and their passion for history, architecture or culture.
now personally, I would have done the new AC differently, I would have had Yasuke as a Samurai like right now, but have more appealing options, they shot themselves in the foot by making woman a generic Ninja. She should have been a Ninja who acted as a prostitute or concubine during day, and moonlighted as a Ninja, and she was very good with disguises and could get into a lot of locations, and then add Somebody like William Adams, who does a mix of Ninja Gameplay and Samurai Gameplay, where hes Samurai on paper and will do Samurai things, but moonlights also as a Ninja throwing a Coupe.
sadly we dont even know if Yasuke is fully playable, he could just be in the story and you only play as the girl.

Honestly, the biggest complaint I've heard from Japanese fans is that the trailer showcased environments based on Chinese architecture instead of Japanese ones, lol.
Honestly, I don't think the Japanese particularly care about the portrayal of Yasuke. There is barely any historical records of the guy to begin with, with the only objective fact about him being that he did exist. And really, this is Japan. The same country who created the Fate franchise. If they don't mind having Miyamoto Musashi turned into an anime waifu, I don't think they particularly care about Yasuke having heightened importance in a video game narrative. Japan knows the difference between historical fact and historical fantasy. Yasuke's portrayal is about as egregious as William Adams' portrayal in the first Nioh game, IMO, in which while I'd prefer playing as a native Japanese character in a Japanese setting, it's nothing to cry over.

Greetings and salutations from Brazil, Kenny!
There are many silly things hovering around the issues of minorities being represented in media, especially as main characters. I won't go into the silliness of expecting an artistic media to be completely historically accurate, Saving Private Ryan is not a documentary, you know?
The way I take it is that there are two types of people surrounding this topic as "an issue":
    - There are the people that turning this into a problem, that reinforce ideologically this reactionary way of thinking about representation of identities they do not identify as, and this is how they make their bread. Be it politics or conservative content creators, honestly to me it doesn't matter if they actually buy into what they're talking about, their interest is to make this a problem.
    - And there are people that doesn't understand the importance of representation, but feel uneasy and buy into this ideology. And the funny part is: this uneasiness comes from a place of wanting ANOTHER form of representation, even if it is straight cis-male white men or hot women.
In the end of the day, we deserve a society that celebrates diversity. We deserve better games and better main characters. Conservatives often forget that minorities grow up loving main characters that does not necessarily represent their gender, their ethnicity, whatever. And some have interest in promoting this "culture war" to gain something from it. This representation is not something new i pop culture, and it's not the first time this was brought up as a "problem". Which is tragically comical.
Feeling that you are into diasporic african content, I invite you to learn a bit of cool historic figures that contributed a lot to black people across the world. Check out a little bit about Luis Gama, brazilian abolitionist lawyer. He was born in 1830, and slavery was only abolished in Brazil in 1888(last country to abolish slavery in the american continent, Brazil brought 5.5 million slaves from africa)
Or maybe Frantz Fanon, black psychiatrist born in 1920 - an intellectual from Martinique that wrote about black existentialism, and the condition of black people throughout the century.
    - - -
Also this is more of a personal share I'm not sure if you're into react content or whatever haha but there's this youtuber called Goony Googles which mostly has been reacting to Brazilian music, mostly brazilian hip-hop and long story short he's living in Brazil now him talking about diasporic african thinking and hip-hop amazed me because it hits me with this international connection with people from other places of the world and sometimes we're so inside our cultural bubble that we can't see that not only our problems but our desires are so alike if it weren't for these thin language barriers.
czcams.com/video/4Ew85F7es1c/video.html&ab_channel=GoonyGoogles I'll just leave this here to check it out IF you want to.
Love you, keep up with the amazing content.

Yasuke immediately gained Nobunaga’s favour. Historians assume that Yasuke knew Japanese well enough to have conversations with Nobunaga, and they also believe that he quickly proved to Nobunaga his skills as a soldier. Soon after their first meeting, Nobunaga granted Yasuke his Japanese name, accepted him into his service, and made him the first recorded foreigner to receive the title of samurai. Yasuke was also one of the few people who dined with Nobunaga, which demonstrated the closeness of their relationship.

Thats some selective victimization right here. I thought that the reason even Japanese people who this story is based of are mad for 2 things: 1. Yasuke was not a samurai but a retainer. Wikipedia has been edited to try and cover for this without having any real source about it. There is no source indincating that Yasuke was ever a samurai. Literally from the horse's mouth. The Japanese. 2. The aesthetics of the game are CHINESE and not JAPANESE in a game set on Japan! Main writer is a white liberal woman as per usual when it comes to these things. I thought that the real victims here are the JAPANESE which are being culturally disrespected. That's crazy that you think that being a black person is the problem. As per usual. well i mean yea there's 100% some over-reaction but the main point wasn't addressed which is why did they have to make a game in Japan about someone who's not from there, i mean if they made a Game about assassins in Africa and the main character was an Asian dude, would that sit right with people ? i mean what if Assassins Creed what was it... the one made in Egypt "origins" the protag was someone from Asia, people from more progressive backgrounds would not bat an eye ? i mean i can see the situation from both points of view and i can say with confidence if the tables were turned i don't know if the community that is opposed to the ones criticizing this game would not have the same over reaction on the other side, we've reached a point where it's either "woke" or it's "pandering to the conservatives" bs and you can say whatever you want but the main issue is people not finding the middle ground, and that means making compromises and talking it out, if all both sides are doing is just throwing shit and telling the other side how stupid they are this will never end

My first thought when I saw that there'd be two playable protagonists was, "Oh, I hope they finally bring back co-op!" Like AC Syndicate should have had, or any other AC title with at least two playable characters (Origins and Odyssey could have had such, too). I have no problem with who will be playable as I know that the series has always been based on real history, but having plenty of creative liberties to have its own fiction of the Templars, Assassins and the First Civilization.
I'm looking forward to Shadows as I have for nearly every mainline AC game, and I appreciated being given the choice of playing as Alexios in Odyssey, even as I accept that Kassandra is the canonical protag. Same for Valhalla, I prefer playing a male character, so I'm perfectly fine with Eivor Varinsdottir being canonically female, but was glad to have the choice since the Animus is a simulation and can work in reasonable excuses for allowing us to stray from what is canon or historically accurate. I'm glad that they could draw from an actual historical figure, and it does encourage me to want to learn more about Yasuke, at the very least through his portrayal in the game, if not through a possible discovery mode.

And there's nothing wrong with black samurai characters we got afro, nagoriuki, the difference with them is they are fantasy but are still cool samurai yasuke really wasn't one

Just bc someone has an opinion about it and questions it doesn't make them racist dude don't be that guy being involved in this crap bc how your coming about this makes ya think your sounding reasonable when it's not.

if you seen the culture wars about this game in social media.
Its not only people didn't want black samurai and want Japanese main character, but they go as far as mocking and insult at Yasuke. And even post picture monkey wearing samurai armor and refer it as Yasuke.
As for Yasuke itself, he is not only a servant that carry sword, but he is a Kashin (retainer) that serve under Nobunaga Oda (Daimyo).
A retainer that serve under high ranked Samurai such as Daimyo in Sengoku Period, and also given his own house, stipend and sword.
That basically made him a Samurai.
We can argue about evidence of him being officially made Samurai day and night, but saying Yasuke is just a slave carrying sword is not right.
Beside, even Japanese dev themselves made Yasuke a samurai

I thought we were past this shit.
He wasn't a Samurai but who the fk cares if he is in Assassin's Creed? It's 2024.
If people play AC for their historical accuracy I have something to tell you..

Megatron is way too bias You can give him evidence against his argument.
He's gonna call you a AfroCentric This man still thinks ancient egyptians We're not african He was retainer but that still is a Samurai.

Retainers in that era were a type of samurai as far as I'm aware, so records and historical accounts referring to Yasuke as a retainer doesn't necessarily mean he wasn't samurai. We just don't know for sure.
But the thing for me has always been that AC is not historically accurate at all so he can totally be a samurai in the game, seeing as shinobi didn't actually exist as we normally see them depicted in pop culture at all, but people are fine with considering "ninja" as accurate.
Also, seeing a Metatron video in one of Kenny's videos was not on my bingo card lol.

Unrooolie, this is exactly the same Ubisoft that did the first Assassin’s Creed. The only tiny little difference is that Yasuke was a samurai before, which he really wasn’t, and now a ninja, which he also wasn’t, if this even is Yasuke. He was a slave then and people grew to understand that black people were sold in Japan, but Yasuke was well known as he was there with Oda Nobunaga when he died.
But what people don’t want to hear in general is history that is “not American”. Meaning even European, or Australian, or South American or any other North American country that is not the US of A is “WOKE”. And that being educated and learning about our heritage’s outside of America that connects even to our melting pot country we know and love today, “is a direct attack on the American people”.

yasuke should have been some freedom cry dlc with a different playstyle, and the main character should have been an interchangeable ninja. and it would have been okay

I think, Yasuke its great inspiration for something more original, we have a lot of asian samurai guys, its interesting to see a black samurai aside from Afro Samurai...the only issue I have is......UBISOFT......and that´s a big problem.

I don't know man this sounds like a bad take getting upset for an actual real person who is a retainer. I think the one thing people should be proud of about this guy is he served under the most badass Japanese leader of all time. But there was other people in Japan that we don't have games about who actually made an impact in Japanese history. What Ubisoft is doing is the exact same thing that people complain about cultural appropriation also this game is written by a white woman who really doesn't really care about history.

it was made out of force tokenism, and it does matter. if it's not genuine diversity. no one is crying for no reason Kenny; I want you to come down a notch and at least try to understand the other side. by labeling a group of folks upset as a grifters or a racist conservative is just like the new wave feminist way of saying "you're a fascist". Imo, we need are own shit period in our own culture. what AAA games do we have that represent Africa and have an African can protagonist none that I know of, does slapping a black character in Japanese setting is that great for deal us?
