    Cool experiment. However, instead of pushing down on the shelves to get it to fall, you should get a pulley system that measures ft pounds until it breaks for more accuracy on it's weight capabilities.

    • @TheKingofRandom
      @TheKingofRandom  Před 2 lety +57

      We were wanting to mainly just test which would holdout the longest, not necessarily what the exact weight limit is at the point of failure. Love the idea of the pulley system though, so we might have to do more with these crazy tapes in the future!

    Alien Tape, is a synthetic adhesive tape consisting of arrays of carbon nanotubes transferred onto a backing material of flexible polymer tape.
    Which basically means it works kindof like a spiders foot, which has arrays of microscopic hairs to make it stick to surfaces. That is why it holds so well when you pull down on it, and does not at all hold when you pull the shelves, tools etc straight off.
    What made the tape fail when you where pulling on it was that you did not pull in a perfectly straight line downwards.

    I've used something similar (don't know what it is! ) The tape is 2" wide and I used 2 6" strips on the back of an 8x8" piece of plexiglass. I put two of them on my finished cherry staircase (I needed something that suction cups could "stick" to. It was for a cat toy I invented. ) The invention still needs work but I haven't been able to remove the two pieces of plexiglass stuck to the stairs!! They have been there for almost a year. They have become, sadly, a permanent feature of the staircase. Sigh.

Obviously you wouldn't _want_ to use Duct tape as makeshift cord and use it to climb down a 10 foot cliff, but if it's all you got and you're confident the tape won't break until you're safely down it's better than jumping and injuring yourself. Alien tape could be made of a more durable plastic which might be better for climbing. It's about improvising and making due with what you got.
