    I definitely want to see this chip turned into an Android car stereo, with the right screen and the right amplifier. I know it may sound overkill, but when you're using the maps app, spotify, car park cameras and other stuff, many "cheap" devices may let you down, crash apps, get slow... I would love to build one myself, but there are few singleboards that run android natively.

    Video drivers are kind of a big thing here, currently we don't have great drivers that really take advantage of that gpu. The current issue with all RK3588s based boards is that they’re limited to using the Android aimed branched kernel that RockChip maintain that is (as far as I know) way behind mainline. This limits support for things like Vulkan and less optimised OpenGL support. Luckily it seems mainline is having support added, which will open the door for way better distributions.

    • @MrSlowestD16
      @MrSlowestD16 Před rokem

      Can't be too far behind if it's running 22.04. You can't use an ancient kernel with the latest & greatest Ubuntu packages/libraries/etc., because eventually you'll run into issues, like some library uses some feature that doesn't exist in such an old kernel.
      EDIT:
      As for OGL and Vulkan. As long as the drivers are up to date an older kernel shouldn't matter. I'm guessing RockChip writes the driver. Really depends when they're updated for the performance of those things. If the driver is just as old as the kernel then yeah, might get annoying that you're behind. But if the driver is pretty modern, just on an old kernel? Still sounds like a good deal.

    • @Durandle
      @Durandle Před rokem +1

      @@MrSlowestD16 They have, AFAIK, merged updates and patches, so it's technically not that far behind, but means it's also not entirely "up to date", and being closed source means it's a gamble as to what may or may not be there and work. Its annoying, I wish they'd just push their stuff to mainline, but seems there's a dedicated group of people doing it for them so it'll get there.

I hate Android for emu boxes because there's inevitably going to be some config tweaks required and it's just a lot easier to crack open a terminal and have full filesystem access and no ro partitions or sandboxing or anything of that nature. The tweaking is a lot easier on a normal Linux desktop, IMO. But generally out-of-the-box Android performance is better, so there's that... But that PS2 perf is quite nice.

    This seems great from a 'techie' standpoint, but I don't really understand the market they expect to target this at. As some noted, if you need a small form-factor desktop, you can get much more powerful x86-based systems with better integrated graphics for the same price. It's also going to provide a lot more versatility and better support than an ARM-based platform. Maybe this will be more efficient; but if it's about saving pennies, there isn't really a value proposition there. Very few people really wanting a true ARM-based SBC desktop replacement, when they realize they also need to make a lot of sacrifices to do it. If I were to buy this, it's because I had cash burning a hole in my pocket and just wanted to play around with it. There are better small form-factor, low power options with greater performance, versatility, and support than this for the price. I bought a Pi4 because it was reasonably inexpensive and is a lot of fun to play with for the price. This, I just can't see myself buying. ARM, even a powerful one with lots of memory, really needs to be at a discount to X86 based options to really be considered for desktop use cases. This isn't. Even for media playback including transcoding, x86 is still likely to be a better option.

    Such long time I'm waiting to get rk3588 based board (rock5B just keep being delayed).
    I would have jump into this one if it had provided a bit more I/O like M.2 ports:
    - one for adding NVMe because onboard storage is very small (32GB or 64GB): how do you manage to use as main desktop PC with that storage?
    - Ideally another M.2 ports for adding 4G modem and make it server + router desktop mini pc
    Hopefully more models should be available soon...

    • @Etienne85

      @@jhyog yeah had considered that one too. I probably dismissed because of slightly higher price ( 290$ vs 220$ in 16GB or 170$ in 8GB) and also powered from jack instead of USB-C. otherwise still a good alternative if not willing to wait for rock5b release.

    This seems like a pretty cool product. My main issue with it is the three camera connectors. Connecting 3 cameras to such a device is going to be pretty niche. If one of these connection points could have been hooked up to run a screen that would have been far more usefull.

  • @QUADBOYification
    @QUADBOYification Před rokem

    Surprisingly this has no option to load ChromeOS yet, in my opinion the best option for daily use. You could build your own laptop with this in a custom form-factor easily. But as a desktop, yes with plenty of storage and an absolutely stunning board. drop-out-free Playback of 1080p content is mainly thanks to drivers and the OS. So it is either Windows 10 Pro or ChromeOS 110.

    • @shlokshah5379
      @shlokshah5379 Před rokem

      The GPU is good enough for this one. It can go head to head with adreno ones. But having more apps and games to use those high ram capacity and power is a must. Arm Linux gets the least love. Windows gets the most games and android and iOS is not far behind but rarely do we see native Linux ports let alone arm Linux ones. Tell me one app that uses this to it's full power and its not open source and a benchmarking tool.

    Hardware video decode on Arm SBC's via Linux does not use the same API's as x86 systems do, its not a trivial thing to implement and far away from being to the point were you install a web browser and it just plays everything in CZcams, that it can at least do 1080p via CPU software decoding is impressive.
