Axis and Allies Anniversary Series: Video 5, Fighter Escorts and Interceptors

  • In this video, I discuss the "Fighter Escorts and Interceptors" optional rule for Anniversary. I review why I feel this optional rule is necessary and demonstrate "Green Skies", a strategy you can employ as the American (or perhaps German) player to lethal effect if this optional rule is NOT used.
    *EDIT 7/20/21 - At 4:01, separate dice are rolled for fighters AND bombers when hit by AA in Anniversary Edition. I had to edit out the specifics of the AA combat in this video after posting as I made a small but critical error in how casualty selection worked. I will address this in video 12 of this series.

    Great video... had a massive argument with my playmate on why we should close the Dardanelles... He finally agreed to it but took some convincing. Also we didn't play with the escort interceptors rule to end up just like you said with 8 American bombers raiding the Axis IC on T3 to devastating effect... Will now always play with both optional rules on.

      This type of comment is one that I most appreciate. Glad to hear that you were able to demonstrate how devastating it is w/o escorts and interceptors. I think the playing experience will be much better going forward. Happy gaming my friend.

    As a kid playing this game, I used to build nothing but bombers as USA just to mess with my friends who were newer to the game (and to give them a chance to actually do something other than get steamrolled by me). Obviously, I was just sending the Bomber stacks on joyrides, attacking land stacks on purpose to trade at negative value to myself (as a means of dragging the game out and give people more familiarity with the basic flow of the game).
    Who could have guessed that my joke strategy could actually get flipped around to be meta-relevant?

    Hi captain I would like to ask a question: is the escorts and interceptors rule still valid when the territory which is bombed has no antiaircraft? Because with this rule it seems like antiaircraft is kinda useless because defending fighters roll at 2 instead of 1. I'm curious about the response, greetings captain

    • @thegoodcaptain1217
      @thegoodcaptain1217  Před 3 měsíci

      How did you get the impression the AA gun was useless? I may be misunderstanding your question, but since the AA gun fires first and since ALL attacking air units can be hit BEFORE the air battle, this appears to make the AA guns even more valuable than before. They will be able to cull escorts from the bombers and give your defending interceptors a better chance to survive. Let me know if I misunderstood your question.

    • @pasbaf
      @pasbaf Před 3 měsíci

      @thegoodcaptain1217 I think it's because most bombing are done with just one bomber and l can barely (as the allies) find a way to bring fighters in the fight, so the axis to counter a bombing can just put a fighter that defends at 2 instead of a AA gun at 1

    • @thegoodcaptain1217
      @thegoodcaptain1217  Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@pasbaf ah. I got you. Yes - the cool thing about this for the AA gun owner is the ability to move it forward to a combat zone or area of the board where it can help deter air attacks - keep in mind this might then require a fighter over each IC every turn when an enemy bomber is in range. This can become - inconvenient…
      So in short, AA guns are less bound to their IC than they were before allowing them more flexibility to move to forward positions

    I recall a limited damages rule, a factory can't be bombed by more than the ipc value it is in, Germany is 10. I might have the wrong game in mind. Do jets intercept better ? German production increased as we bombed them more, when our bombers focused on all German fuel production the effects became immediate, I've run some WW2 machine shop equipment, they didn't know how to make them light, very heavy and nearly impossible to bomb, might melt a few wires but they had them machines up and running again quickly. today's big machines wouldn't survive as well, lots of thin walled castings that wouldn't have nearly the same rigidity as the old school equipment.

    • @CaptainVasiliArkhipov
      @CaptainVasiliArkhipov Před 2 lety +1

      Unlimited damage in the capital I think, 6 fighters there should average $20 or more in interception kills, plus anti aircraft hits, this ain't no cheap attack, if Italy can only be bomed for ,$6 max, it's possible the German losses might not exceed the attacker's.

    • @thegoodcaptain1217
      @thegoodcaptain1217  Před 8 měsíci +1

      The IC can receive up to twice the value of the territory. Germany can take 20 hits, Italy can take 12. In my experience, that's plenty enough to seize both economies.

      @@thegoodcaptain1217I see, I'm remembering classic rules I think. Are the bombers able to get shot down before the bombing happens? Ie...selective AA hits, and do the interceptor fighters ever hit the escorted bombers..ie..every other hit must be a bomber or the attacker gets to choose all interception casualties ?

    • @thegoodcaptain1217
      @thegoodcaptain1217  Před 8 měsíci

      @@mikedearing6352 there is no limit to IPC loss in Classic from bomb damage. It is paid directly to the bank as soon as the dice are rolled.
      In Anniversary, the bombers can be shot down prior to the bomb run. Escorts and bombers will both be shot at but with separate rolls for each - i.e. the owner of the bombers/escorts does not get to decide how those hits are allocated. He could NOT have the interceptors absorb the AA hits.
