- This video is part of the "Donner Pass Summer Storm" Series. A strange summer storm blew over Northern California but the trains did not stop. I was there to cover the action.
In this video you see a couple of trains at Yuba Gap, California along the Donner Pass Route (UP Roseville Sub). The first train is the MRVRO. This manifest was traveling from Roseville, CA to Roper, UT. The next train was the KOAMN. This intermodal train was traveling from Oakland, CA to Marion, AR. Both trains were working hard up the Donner Pass grade.

I remember this video!
Cars reflect effect of rain. Even in rainy time cars look very interesting. More colorful and and contrast. Containers, box and tank cars look like recently washed and polished.
One of my favorite parts of California! Great fishing and long trains👍
Best video ever!
wow. sounds like they had them big rubber bands wound up tight in them engines. hehe. another good one :)
Listen to those dynamics screaming! AWESOME!
Always amazing to me how much raw power the engines have to pull that many cars up the mountains.
this is one of my favorite spots on the pass. i like the fact that you can see one train in two tunnels if you walk a little more towards the one in this video.
Those dynamics were sure humming...
You have some great videos. Thank you
Wow! That was exciting!
0:50 my fav
Wow, cool sound at the beginning!
I think it's actually named Yuba Gap. I've been there several times to shoot photos and video.
Well done. Thoroughly enjoyed this.
Yes. They are DPUs which are common on trains along this route.
dynamic sounds awesome!
Seeing all the viewers on watching trains, I don't feel so weird anymore.
An april storm blasts some double-stack container cars down and causes derailment. I've heard this news just in Germany. Sometimes it happens here with unloaded trucks on motorway-bridges. The double-stack cars, you show in the end of the video, are working like a high sail on a small track!
I believe that was them just saying hello since I had been chasing them up the hill. It also serves as a warning to any trespassers inside the upcoming tunnels.
for some reason I always feel hungry when I look at this video.
Nice video. I like the S curve. Didn't see much storm.
Its not usually rainy in May... Its California! Definitely out of the ordinary for the time of year.
Nice shots! You can expect a lot more traffic through DP in the coming months!
Awesome video!
Close to train, thanks!
Ha, rail traffic is expected to increase because of track work on the Canyon Sub through Portola. Also, plans to run Capitol Corridor trains from Sacramento to Reno are in the works once we get the new equipment from the East.
Great video! Robert
I foamed, er ah 'documented' rail action over the pass in the early - mid seventies. SP ruled the pass then with 100+ car trains sporting end and swing helpers. SD 40's, 45.s 45 T-s, UP SD 40 - 2's. up to 40 trains a day. Solid reefer blocks. Man, those 20 Cyl. 645's blasting up to Norden. You could feel the power in your gut! Would stay in Truckee or Reno (rolling the bones at Harrah's). All but memories now. At least I had sense to buy UP stock in 1985. I bought 1200 shares @ I think $14 bucks per.
Yes, the SP used to push the envelope and max out their trains over the Sierras. The result, they went through locomotives like crazy. UP does things different and over amps the power. Your decision to buy stock at that price in the UP is likely the best that you have ever made, especially at about $165 per share now.
very good
I bet it was noisy in the first trains cab. The engines were wound up!
Being old school rail fanner, I would do the video away from he tracks and so that the people could see what the cars and locomotives look like, otherwise very good
The traction motors in the locomotives.
Probably around 20 or so total in a 24 hour period. A lot of eastbound run at night. Also just depends on the day.
Union Pacific rulez
Nice video, thanks! Ignore the jerks in here.
Esses trens são fortes pra caraca as máquinas são potentes
GoUP...💪💪🔥🔥🚂🚂
That was one hell of a storm?
At 2:36, were there two engines in the middle of the train?
You need to use a matte box. Helps to keep the rain off the camera lens.
How many trains go over Donner per day?
I wonder if I might be able to find dooner pass on train sims
Aside from the modern awning, the tunnel in the foreground looks pretty old. Is this the original Donner Pass road bed laid down in the 1860's? Thanks.
すごぃ。。
What was the howling sound in the beginning?
what storm ?
Storm? What storm? This is a typical cloudy day in Nor-Cal. When they storm, it just piddles. Well, now I know where these suckers are going--since it goes right by my house out of Roseville. Utah huh?
Where is the storm? The camera lense is clear the ground looks dry.
Wheres the storm
The dc Motorsport this much noise normally?
By traffic do you mean train or car? Both? :)
Storm????
What's the loud fan noise
Nevermind
engineer sounds a "- o o" at the beginning of the video before it got to you. after the locomotive passes there is a series of blasts. was that just a warning to you after they saw you/your camera? i didn't see a road crossing in any of the frames.
At 7:17 why is that last container before the last loco tilted, like it's not sitting correctly in the well car?
It looked wonky
Interesting. I hadn't heard about the detours from the Canyon. We'll see if that Sac-Reno Train ever really comes to life. I've heard rumors but I'm still skeptical of it ever happening.
What storm??
Must have been those 4 raindrops on the lense at the beginning, lol
why no brake van on the back are all wagons braked from the cab
You're joking right? Brake vans ("caboose" in Yank terminology) hasn't been used in decades anywhere in the world except for India. And ALL wagons have brakes since the advent of the air brakes over 130 years ago.
thankyou i did not know i suspected that all were braked with air
thanks again
lukebccb Except Russia. They have yet to invent those things.
Just check out those CZcams videos of car crashes in Russia. Hell, half the big-rigs appear to have no brakes as they plow through traffic jams.
Vodka good.
I miss those cabooses. One hot summer day at Warren, California appx. 1981 (outside Mojave) I was hanging by the tracks when a brakeman in a caboose hollered, "You look hot and thirsty!" and tossed me a sixer of those small, plastic water bottles as he passed. Half of them tore open when they hit the ballast but I chugged the other 3. Ice-ass cold!
"There's something about a train..." (AmTrak's old slogan)
thats supposed to be a storm?
Trains csx
?
pl check 1.09 to 1.20 in particular and observe the squeaking noise. can some knowledgeable please tell what causes that loud squeaking noise? I have observed while traveling and always wondered...VishG
it's flanges of the wheels scratching the track
I'm a cool video
