- The rigger trick: Make your own boom-brake.
If you haven't had the time and money to buy an expensive and advanced boom-brake, you can easily make one yourself:
With a simple 8 shape descender (available in climbing equipment stores) you can mount an effective boom-brake that slows down an involuntary jibe when sailing downwind. The rope is mounted on each side by the shrouds and goes through the 8 shape - and thereby taking the power out of the jibe, and prevents damage to the boom and shrouds by accidental gybes with great force.
The video shows the principle demonstrated on a Swan55.

I found one of these in an old tool box of mine and was thinking of doing the same thing....I also have a "regular" boom brake but it's huge compared to this. Thanks for reinforcing the idea - seems like it works pretty well. I'll have to make some tests of the two...
You're welcome! Great you could use it :) Best regards Louise / Riggerne
Great demonstration. A real life and rig saver!
Nice!
Brilliant!
Ohhhh, i see. That's awesome, did you think of that?
Simple.
so a boom brake just slows down the whip of the boom arm flying so it doesn't knock someone inthe head or off the boat unexpectadtely ?
Correct! The boom break does not stop the boom from coming over but it reduces the speed and shock loading so chances of injury or breakage are reduced.
