- Despite the threat of US sanctions, India has inked a deal with Russia to buy the S-400 air defence missile system.
So , Why India just cannot afford to walk away from its S-400 missile agreement with Russia
Russia's S-400 missile defence systems is regarded as among the best in air defence technology.The S-400 is one of the most sophisticated surface-to-air defence systems in the world.
And , India's neighbour China also has the same system - the two countries fought a war in 1962 and routinely see skirmishes on their border. So for India it was imperative to boost its defence capabilities - especially in view of a possible two-front conflict, with Pakistan and China
However, at every India-US meeting, a common question is raised to US representatives by the press is whether there would be sanctions on India as per CAATSA
CAATSA was signed into law in 2017 with the goal of punishing Russia for its activities in Ukraine and Syria. It is essentially a fight between the United States and Russia, with other countries acting as players. India is one among them. Indian officials have consistently claimed that the Indo-Russian agreement for the S-400 was inked in 2016, but CAATSA was implemented in 2017. As a result, the transaction predates CAATSA.
They further said that India has an independent foreign and security policy, and that the nation is free to choose the weapon systems it needs and the countries from which it would buy them. India considered the S-400 to be the best in its class, even more effective than the US systems already on the market, and therefore fit for its national needs

India has a valid reason to not fully trust the US because their recent action in Afghanistan shows they are not reliable and their past tells more. Unlike Turkey, India is not a part of NATO. Neither did it have a military alliance with US on F 35 and other sensitive technologies.
India has always been non-aligned and therefore had no obligations towards the US. If US insists to sanction India, it will be their loss. India has faced sanctions before and it hasn't been a bother for India. So US better think 10 times before taking any unwise step.

The deal is too far for India to back out now....but I don't think US would do Hard Santions on India...maybe a small temporary santion or they might even make a special waiver for India as the US focus on China is increasing day by day and US can't afford to loose Indian Alliance in the Indian and Pacific Ocean.... Why would India back out of purchasing one of the top two air defense systems in the world. There are more that a few aircraft manufactures world wide that are willing to sell India 4.5 gen fighters. France and Sweden come to mind first. Modi will do what is best for India.

S-400 is not an offensive missile system ,but a defensive one. India has the right to buy this to strengthen its protection.

As we know there is a shortage of Squadrons in Air Force IAF is filling this gap with Air Defence Systems. And if INDIA purchases THAAD what Guaranty do we get that US wouldn't stop it's servicing and upgradation in future.

Actually,the range of BARAK-8/MR-SAM is 0.5 kms-100kms as of now and there is an advanced version of this missile called BARAK-8ER which is currently on development which will have a range of around 150 kms.

Actually US needs to know the actual country US need to impliment sanctions was against China not Russia.
I have practically lost count of the number of SAM systems India is working on right now. Given the fact that every successive system will be ahead in terms of capabilities from the previous one, am excited to see what will be the end results of our indigenous programs. Only areas where we lag now is higher thrust jet engine & nuclear submarines.
The MTCR its not a treaty but a memorandum of understanding between the countries that manufacture those types of missiles(and they must have sign it) to not sell missiles(ballistic, cruise etc but not SAM missiles) with more than 300km range and 500kg warhead.
But its not a mandatory and there is no penalty, sanctions or otherwise if you breach it. Some times those countries honoured that treaty and sometimes whenever it suits them do not.
India is not affraid by American CAATSA sanctions that's why India purchased S400 from Russia
