Murten/Morat
This medieval town is located above Lake Morten and is one of the most beautiful towns in Switzerland. Today's city was built around 1170 on the southern shore of the lake. Murten is located in the west of Switzerland - on the language border between French and German, in the canton of Fribourg. This is also why it is known as Morat in French. The area around Lake Morten is best known for the battle of June 22, 1476, when federal forces defeated the army of Charles the Bold, King of Burgundy. Medieval towns often have cobbled streets - Morten is no exception.
Rampart walls
The rampart walls were built in several stages and are made of different materials such as sand, tuff and sandstone. The lower 15 stone layers belong to the period before the construction of the city (12th century). On the city wall there are eight views of the battle of Morten in 1476. Fragments of Louis Brown's Panorama (painted in 1894) were used to create a visual correspondence between the painting and the natural landscape.
Morten has a hidden gem - an enchanting castle dating back to the 13th century! This charming castle took on a new look in the 18th century.
The old town of Morten is surrounded by medieval ramparts that offer a stunning view of the lake and the Alps. You can walk along the walls and admire the architecture and scenery. It was founded in 1200 by some noble dukes and full of great places like Hauptgasse / Grand Rue and arcades. Morten is so beautiful that even the police station enters the race. The stunning Rathaus, a magnificent town hall with an amazing history! Destroyed in the 15th century, this beauty has been lovingly restored with exquisite baroque decorations.
Bern Gate / Berntor
A centuries-old attraction with a colorful history! A gate tower belonging to the 13th century, which is the symbol of the city. destroyed in the wars of the 15th century, it was rebuilt several times until the 18th Nikolaus Hebler design.
