Wormcity Wormery Review - My composting little friends

  • When another youtuber got a wormery I thought "hey, awesome, I want one", so I did some research (loads and loads of pedantic research) an settled on the wormfarm from a family run company called Wormcity. I chose a 4 tray, 100 litre wormcity wormery and I decided to review the thing...
    The verdict is very good - I order the thing online and received it within 24 hours, which in and of itself was impressive, but it is very very simple to put together, its very well made, and its good value. There are also ethics which have gone into its construction - its made out of recycled plastic, where none of the other wormfarms seem to be. Also its manufacturer in the UK, so the carbon emissions from source to destination are far far lower than the likes of the Tiger Wormery which I believe is made in asia.
    I never ever link to stuff from my video descriptions, but I was very impressed with this product, and if you are going to buy a wormery I'd really like to push you towards the green option. Sooooo... and I never do this.... their website is www.wormcity.co.uk
    I hope you enjoy the review - my wife was laughing at me and my new little friends - but I'll have the last laugh when I growing awesome veg with this awesome compost.

    I remember watching your setup video after your Wormcity had arrived, around the time I bought mine.
    Here we are 5 years on!
    I thought it was a great piece of kit then, now having changed my method of using it I think it’s even better.
    I won’t take any credit for my new method as I discovered it on another video from a guy in Florida who has a channel titled ‘Vermicompost Learn by Doing’.
    It’s very clever, you always keep the bottom 2 trays for future feeding trays and they contain nothing but shredded cardboard which gets inoculated by the moisture that descends from above, ensuring they are full of microbial life and are already decomposing when you need them. The top tray is, obviously, the feeding tray and when full drops down a level to spend 2-3 months maturing. New bedding tray gets added on top, harvested tray is refilled with new bedding and goes on the bottom. Bottom bedding tray moves up a level.
    An ingenious way of getting the worms to migrate from the harvest tray is to sit it on top of the new feeding tray to which you have added food. Agitate the castings and the worms will descend to the feeding tray by themselves as they don’t like the light nor being disturbed. Repeat the process at 15 minute intervals until the majority of the worms have migrated. Genius!

      I got my friends niece to go through the tray taking the worms out and putting them in another tray . she was kept busy for hours. even naming some of the worms. I kept her supplied with drinks and treats. id say she got about 80% out. the rest went into the garden with the compost . keeps the garden healthy.

    Would love to see this wormery set up from the ground instead of on top of a table. Would be easier to see the different stages of the process more clearly. Also so sad to not see any replies to queries posted by people who have commentated on the video.

    I used to have a Can-o-worms but gave it to a friend when I moved into a flat - didn't have the heart to ask for it back when I got a small garden again, so have ordered one of these. With the Can-o-worms it took a fair old while to really get the colony nicely established but then it was surprising how much waste you could convert - so went for a Worm City 125l this time to really get a good yield.

    I haven't found any problems to be honest. I did hear about one guy that was having trouble, but that's because he left his wormery in full sun = baked worms. Still going strong, I've only aerated the bottom tray once, but I'm not sure it needed it.

  • @VinceSamios
    @VinceSamios  Před 12 lety +2

    Worms are sneaky little buggers - and I would say sure, they are just plastic trays, but the hole size, the tray height, the correct size sump, the right height sump tap, etc etc etc. You could just buy a cheap old rusty car, but it won't do the same job as a nice new modern car.

    Put a couple layers of damp newspaper on top of them it keeps the bugs out and the worms in. I got mine in the spring and have never had any get out I lalso started keep the extra trays on top and when I did the worms started going up into them so I put damp paper layers and now they stay put.

    I have the same wormcity system. I've had it for 16 months now and its been great. Loads of worm tea to feed my plants and I've been saving up the worm castings / compost as I'm going to make up my own compost mix for my tomatoes this year.
    Great video btw :o) Chris

    Hi when adding a 2,3,4 trays should i first put newspaper in the bottom of each tray and follow steps of first tray you demonstrated ? Also since the top lid doesnt have any vent holes do u think its a good idea to drill a few holes just incase its a very hot day?

    Just wondering, was there any problems you came across while establishing your wormcity worm bin?
    how do you find the tray system sitting on top of the other trays? does it squash the castings/worms? or make it anaerobic? would you recommend supporting the weight of the tray so not to cause these problems? or is it fine just the way it is?

    Two questions: Will worms slither up the sides if only 1/2 filled w/compost?
    I am having a problem with moth and Japanese beetle larvae infestation? Got a cure? (I know I can use my Jumbo Cajun barbi boiler and sterile the soil but that means i have to spend the whole day picking out the live worms before i euthanize the larvae ...?

    um is that last comment a joke? hehe you may be handsome but I'm afraid you are either so softly spoken that you're nearly inaudible or there has been some sort of technical error with this vid as I literally can't hear your voice at all! All I could hear was the music...that's not intentional surely? I wanted to hear what you had to say about the wormery! I've got the same one, it seems to be going fine but i've only had it a week and i was impatient to see what it will look like hehe

    don\t think you were supposed to dump all the worms in one tray. That's why they gave you 5 trays. :-)

    • @keshatton2334
      @keshatton2334 Před 2 lety

      The worms will travel upwards to follow the food, they stay in the bottom tray until the food is more or less turned into castings. Once you add the 2nd tray they will go up, you then process the bottom tray, so remove all the lovely compost. Some worms may still be there so you add these to the 2nd tray (which is now the bottom tray) Its a continual process. great fun. The worms are not stupid. You have 5 trays so you have different stages of compost going on.
