Sgt. Rafael Peralta & the Forgotten Medal of Honor of Fallujah | November 2004

- čas přidán 18. 07. 2020
- In November 2004, U.S. Forces launched Operation Phantom Fury, which aimed to secure the Iraqi city of Al-Fallujah. Among the troops involved were the U.S. Marines of 1st Battalion, the 3rd Marine Regiment, including Sergeant Rafael Peralta, whose bravery during house clearance operations led to him being recommended for a posthumous Medal of Honor.
However, controversially, the U.S. Department of Defense downgraded his recommendation to a Navy Cross.

At least he got a destroyer named after him. That's pretty metal.
He's dead it don't mean shit to him
Haytham Al Jaru jhee
Thats the alternative highest of high awards that he could get after getting "downgraded posthumous".
That man deserves that honor and a rest from that horrible day.
Haytham Al Jaru oh really? Thank you for your amazing revelation... dipshit
Haytham Al Jaru that’s why government and military award individuals who have acted without their personal safety. If not, the living may not recognize the bravery and love of the dead
This is only a small glimpse into what immigrant men and women who are in the armed forces have done for the American flag. SGT Peralta was Mexican by birth but American by choice and gave his life for that flag. That makes him more American than most of us, a true selfless hero.
No American woman regardless of background has ever thrown themselves on a grenade
@William Moore You're right no one asked him to jump on a grenade and that was his choice. Thats why he was put in for the MOH and received the Navy cross. Do you not know what selfless service means you inbred dimwit? You are so shook that a man originally from Mexico is more American than you that its comical LMAO. Who hurt your feelings William?
His a traitor and should be treated has one 🤷 don't betrayed your country and then expect good things to happen where you don't belong , He Gets No Sympathy From Me .
William Moore You make it seem like sacrificing ones life for their country is an easy task. Stop talking shit keyboard warrior.
Tony trump you’re a complete idiot with no morals what so ever. Saying that for another human being, protecting his fellow HUMAN peers from an explosion which led to his death, is and will always be heroic not matter the circumstances.
Hopefull this video will raise the necesary awareness for the well deserved upgrade...
And get the MoH he deserves
hopefully trump does right by us again and upgrades the medal.
@Jason that's so untrue it's ridiculous. Wanting legal integration into a country =/= not liking people of that country. Also there is a large percentage of Mexican and Latin American people that vote for Trump.
@Jason I don't like unrestricted illegal immigration. That's not the same as not liking Mexicans. I hope the family of this Mexican and American gets the Medal of Honor they should have gotten 15 years ago.
@Jason don't know where you heard that bs. Ffs Mexican immigrants are America's only hope at this point since they actually stull have community's with family values instead of the soy boys leftist pansies urban areas have now. We just don't want a wide open door to let any ass hat in. Wanting a border and hating a group of people are two very different things and im sure the Democrats never taught you that.
Typical arm chair quarterbacking done at Navy HQ. Task and Purpose article was spot on calling out their hypocrisy. R.I.P SSG Peralta.
One of the stories I heard of why the decision was made was because he was already shot and dying. Really strange decision to not award someone that reached out, pulled it to him and took the blast of the grenade.
C.A. Toro, my thoughts exactly. Well said.
RIP
@@eltoroloco1936 logic from higher up is that he was dead already and couldn't have reached for the grenade, hence not worthy of MOH. But his navy cross citation says he pulled the grenade underneath him....... military logic in a nutshell...... and not to take anything away from kyle carpenter but his MOH has more holes in it. There are no witnesses(a criteria for MOH) to his action of pulling the grenade underneath him, Kyle and his buddy were disoriented from the grenade blast that they have no idea what happened and the marine corps to this day still have no idea what really happened to them that day and yet, he was awarded the MOH
He should have been awarded MOH, maybe someday it will be corrected.
"Be proud of me, bro.....be proud to be an american". That part at the end almost made me shed a tear. Beautiful.
I got choked up big time by that. As a Marine Veteran, I hope his family and brother are doing well.
"be proud to be an American..." Sounds like a lot of Americans need to hear those words, too.
Sgt. Peralta embodied what Americans should aspire to. Regardless of whether he is ever awarded the Medal of Honor, his sacrifice will be remembered.
@albert speer If people stand for a different political view than of your own it's because they have a different opinion. Two people can disagree and still be patriotic. It's those who stand for nothing at all that are the problem because they have nothing to contribute.
albert speer You've obviously got something against Democrats but how are Republicans any different? Under Trump, the VA has become increasingly unorganized even when the nation isn't even participating in any major wars although he'd have you believe otherwise since his supporters would just feast on his shit. Trump has brought the US onto the brink of war on multiple occasions with Iran, China and Russia with a complete disregard to the lives of US servicemen and women. What's worse is that Trump's erratic foreign policy has portrayed US troops as mercenaries that can be used for the political gain of other countries. Trump and his Republican administration has completely disrespected and tarnished the reputation of US military with the man going as far as even disrespecting soldiers who have given the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. American servicemen and women should not be disrespected by some bigot who didn't even have the balls to go to Vietnam.
People take "freedom" for granted and say, "Our rights are the law," while they ignore the laws that protect them. A huge minority or even a majority isn't proud to be American but proud to be spoiled.
@albert speer Are you a vet? Doesn't sound like it. The issue is about a dead Marine killed in action. Basically, you sound ignorant. No, Stupidly Racist.
I'm a Black former Marine 1961-1965; USAF 1966-Dec 1969; USCG Reserves Ret 2009...with Agent Orange issues. Just want to say many Minorities-of-Color served this country, in all branches and many have died without equal representation. Those of the dominant culture in the military and political higher ups, have a history of racism especially of DMH DeadMinorityHeroes. Why is that?
It’s an absolute disgrace of how few MOH’s were awarded the last 20 years. I’ve known stories of heroics you can’t imagine. Semper Fi. Cpl 1/3 Bravo.

Try winning the Victoria Cross. I don't think the action described in this award would have even been considered.
Handing out MOH's would have the unfortunate side effect of reminding the public that there's still a war or two going on.
The problem lies with the way the USMC awards this medal, if he was in the Army, he would have been awarded the MOH, the Corps is just really tough about it....
@@minirock000 The sacrifices of any of these men is not a competition. These are men most certainly greater myself, and I would presume you as well. They all deserve the recognition and reverence their actions deserve.

@@michaelheery6303 shut up, this is time to pay respects to those Marines.
Peralta was a legend. It makes me sad that some higher up ruined his chances of getting the medal of honor, which was clearly deserved.
Rip, you American Legend :)
same as the medal of honor file of captain swenson, which went missing from general petraeus desk, after the captain criticised his higher-ups for not approving close air support
but in the end, he got his moh
Wow. "Got shot and was already dying".. so what, he was then obligated to hold that grenade? So stupid. Guy's a legend
A civilian, Robert Gates Made the call. Gates never served in the military.
@@s6fsaasfg694 No he did not. He got a navy cross. What happened was there was VIDEO and the pictures and autopsy showed that he was already dead before the grenade. He was killed by friendly fire.. and his body was right place right time. Look we cannot just give out medal of honour without proof yeah soldiers will always overstate a comdrade to honour him. You do not get the HIGHEST medal in the land for getting shot or kia in action. War is ugly and men die. If they just gave out the MOH it would not be right. I am Canadian and we have not given out our highest medal the victoria cross in the war on terror. 165 canadians have died. You dont get it for killing the enemy or by dying. You have to go BEYOND the call of duty. IMO I do disagree with some citations personally. Poltical pressure, and wanting to honour soldiers is a reason why so many have been awarded the MOH... Evidence states he did not jump on it but was already dead
I served with Rafael back in 02. I remember we use transport prisoners. I somehow have his chaser ID somewhere and hope to get it to his family someday. RIP Brother, you are missed.
If you know what city his family lives in and one of their full names, you should be able to look up their address. I used to use a website called “white pages” but the website is a bit harder to use these days. You may try Facebook too. I don’t know what a chaser ID is but I hope you get it to where it belongs, I’m sure they’d appreciate it during these hard times
I did police chasing duty at Camp Lejeune back in 03. Didn’t like it one bit, but it was my duty to transport them around. I hope you are doing well in life today brother. 👍
That is great you are going to do that and also thank you so much for your service and May God Bless you 🙏👍💪💪
Dude it’s been over 16 years. Maybe do it instead of putting comments about it on CZcams.

Peralta reportedly served the United States with enthusiasm and patriotism: "In his parents' home, on his bedroom walls hung only three items - a copy of the United States Constitution, the Bill of Rights and his boot camp graduation certificate. Before he set out for Fallujah he wrote to his 14-year-old brother, 'Be proud of me, bro ...and be proud of being an American.'

Just give this man the medal he deserves already. Too much politics in the military.
This young man was in boot camp with my son and I remember him as such a caring gentle soul. When we heard of his passing we were so sad. May he rip in piece.
Great story! What a hero. Tragic that they failed to award him properly, smothering a grenade is like the most common thing that gets the MOH awarded.
R.I.P Sgt. Peralta
From a fellow Marine, from 1st Bn. 4th Marines. Sgt. Peralta's actions and citation clearly constituted an CMH Award. Thanks to this channel, for bringing light to this Marine's story, and hope it gets upgraded.
Semper Fidelis!
@@suckmyballzgameplays7172, thank you sir, for the comment. To your question of my service to this great Nation. My service was to honor "All" Allies, especially the United States fallen Warriors that saved generations from eating grass. It is truly sad, we live in a society where someone has to conjure up an arm-chair commando image to receive unwanted credit.
The story of Sgt. Peralta's actions warranted an upgrade for his valiant act of sacrifice. This is the true Hero!
R.I.P. Sgt. Peralta...Salute!
Maybe all who read this CZcams will press President Trump in his second term to upgrade the award to a FULL CMH.

How long has it been since you served? You do know that as a fellow Marine it's not recognized as "CMH."
It's just MOH. Congress has nothing to do with who is awarded that metal. All service men and women know this.

In my eyes he has one
And in God's eyes as well
Robert Gates, Sec. Def. denied the honor. He served both the Bush and Obama WH.
DOD hair splitting.....the Marine earned The CMH and his family deserves to have it as part of Sergeant Peralta's legacy......
My son was also a casualty of the 2nd Battle of Fallujah and in my humble opinion Peralta earned it....
I am sorry for your loss Mr. Ximenez. May he rest in peace. Semper Fi.
Amen brother! He most definitely earned it. God bless you, and your son. Semper fi
I thank you. ❤️🇺🇸
They could name a city after him and it wouldn't be enough. RIP, Rafael Peralta. And thanks for being a true American hero.
Here would have been first non-white service member to be awarded the Medal of Honor , one thing people do not understand SGT Rafael Peralta would have been first illegal immigration to win the highest award of this nation .
He did the same thing as Kyle Carpenter, Jason Dunham, and Michael Mansour, that Navy Cross needs to be upgraded.
Right on Brother. They all four did the same...Ive watched all four and alot of videos of Kyle Carpenter and he truly didn't know that he jumped onto the grenade but did use his body to shield y he blast for his fellow man that day...they have drone footage iam sure off its just not been released cause they have them for the other two...so most definitely they all 4 deserved it...if we as Americans keep pushing this man will be awarded the MOH...Semper Fi...RIP

The marine corps came to the conclusion that Kyle jumped on the grenade, but to this day the marine corps still have no idea what really happened...... sgt Peralta's navy cross citation states he pulled the grenade underneath him, but the reason his MOH gets denied is because he was already dead and couldn't have pulled the grenade underneath him
Wow that's so messed up! This man is a hero! "Peralta Hall" was the headquarters building I worked out of on Camp Hansen, Okinawa back in 2009. (31st MEU) The building contained a memorial dedicated to Sgt. Peralta yet I've never heard this story until now. Rest in power warrior! Semper Fidelis! -Cpl Dixon D.L.
It’s great that you made us aware of this. A Medal of Honor is the least the US government could give for someone who chose to forfeit their life for others
I got chicken skin watching this. I was part of Vigilant Resolve, and was a part of Phantom Fury as well... Lucky I guess. It changed my life forever. This man showed what it is to be a Marine. He gave himself for his brothers. He will always be owed a debt by those that survived because of his actions. Sgt. Peralta is what the Marine Corps is about. Selfless loyalty and love for your brothers. Semper Fi Devildog!
Viva mi raza!!!!!! I hope you get the medal of honor that you surely earned my fellow mexican brother Descanse en paz💪🇺🇸🇮🇹
As a former paratrooper, this breaks my heart. Let's not dance around it, the only reason this man didn't get the CMH is because of his ethnicity. I'm ashamed as an American and as a former soldier for the actions of that panel. And I thank the Navy for being worthy leaders and giving him that ship, I salute you.
There is no greater honor than giving your life for a friend, Rest In Peace Rafael P. May God rest your soul.
In every war there are accounts of soldiers who, at a critical moment, choose to take a grenade unto themselves. I can't imagine how much commitment that requires.
The Ultimate and Final Commitment.
This was incredibly humbling. Thank you for keeping the memory of these men alive. I hope Peralta's family finds some peace. I wish politicians and the MSM would feel an ounce of shame for contributing to the division of this country. Not much compares to the honor with which these men conduct themselves.
This Man, this Hero, this Marine, joined a small group of people whose pictures should be the definitions of the words, "Selflessness" and "Sacrifice." God Bless You, Sgt. Rafael Peralta, no doubt in my mind, that you had some Crowns awaiting your arrival in Heaven. I'm so very grateful for you and others like you, that set the standards for the rest of us to live by.
What a brave marine, we stand together as brothers love from the UK.
He was a Marine's Marine. Gave his life for his brothers. No greater honor. Thank you and RIP Rafael. You are NOT forgotten brother.
The man gave his life so his fellow Marines could live to see another day, yet no Medal of Honor?
What a disgrace for the DOD! God Bless you Sargent Peralta!
Scores of men have won the Medal of Honor for EXACTLY the same actions displayed by this courageous man. As far as I'm concerned, he won that award and I hope the surviving members of that very exclusive group recognize him accordingly. Blessings to all who have served!

One of the most frustrating things that happens in the military and paramilitary organizations. If Sgt. Peralta had been accused of some war crime, they would’ve done everything to hammer him. However, you doing something heroic, it’s questioned and downgraded or dismissed. I wish the names of those who declined the the Medal Of Honor would be published. Great video as always.

SGT. PERALTA ABSOLUTELY DESERVES THE CMOH! There’s been 1 for sure given out for the exact same act by a Marine in Iraq & though critically injured miraculously survived! I’m talking about Kyle Carpenter. This man here deserves The CMOH as well & if it’s not still being petitioned it definitely needs to be. Thank you for the upload.
I’m confused as to the thinking behind the D.O.D, did they think it had fallen directly under his body by mistake?
No. Obviously, the grenade was thrown, then Sgt. Peralta happened to teleport in from another location and just happened to land on top of the grenade. Just a tragic accident. So sad. :(
R.I.P. Sergeant Peralta.
Its DOD red tape speak for "We dont think he did something worth the MOH."
Or "We cant recommend that because we dont want to seem like were giving them out like candy."
@Jason That's not the case at all. Stop spreading misinformation and the "hurr durr America racist" narrative.
@Jason ffs no i wasn't because of that christ half of the damn core is Hispanic. The military shits the bed in every country this just happens to be a great example of a massive governmental entity that is so large it collapses over its own weight
The reasoning that they used is that he may not have been conscious and lucid after suffering a head wound, and that it's possible that he inadvertently rolled onto the grenade. All the Marines who were there say that this reasoning is horseshit, and that it was a deliberate and conscious act. And so Peralta got the Big Green Weenie even after death. But his fellow Marines know what he did, and we recognize his actions even though some POG with a lot of brass on his collar may not.
Those words from his letter kinda slapped me in the face like a brick.
Great topic! Thanks for bringing more and wider exposure to this! Now, hopefully he'll get the MoH he deserves.
Thank you all for doing this story!
I'm a former "Green-side" Navy Corpsman and have been following this story.

Jusqu'au bout de la mission ... Jusqu'au bout de lui même ... Respect et honneur à lui ... 🤚
Australian General Jim Molan was commanding a different part of the Iraq operation during Fallujah. (How is that word not added to spell check?) He called it the young man's Omaha Beach for how crazy dangerous entering the city was. One thing I remember from his book was him listening to an argument between American soldiers on who would be the first through the door into a house. The first one through the door was often shot. It wasn't an argument to NOT be first but to BE first. No soldier wanted his mate to be shot so all the guys in their section (I think American's call them squads? 4 man teams?) wanted to go first.
Thank you for this video he should Never be forgotten........

Army infantry after the grenade would have finished clearing the whole house, eliminating or capuring the insurgents defending the house.
The Marines choosing to backout of the house after the grenade detonation leaving the fallen marine in place was a choice, lacking in experienced leadership and frot with fear leading to this incorrect decision and mission time wasted. This I cannot believe that the Marines did, its unlike any Marines to retreat in this way.
Uhh, they did finish clearing the house once they regrouped. There’s a reason why the Marines were chosen as the lead element in Fallujah 1 & 2.
