- The planet Sel, where the books Elantris and the Emperors Soul take place, is one of the most magically diverse planets we’ve seen in the Cosmere. The entire planet is invested, and the way magic is accessed is different than other place in the Cosmere.
In this video, Jason explores some of these magic systems in depth, mostly AonDor and Soul Forgery. Brief mention is also given to Dakhor, Chayshan, and Bloodsealing.
Enjoy! Thank you so much for watching!

Favorite Cosmere channel.
Production quality is top tier! Eagerly looking forward to your next video.
Thank you!
Continues to be the best Cosmere content around. I've been reading Cosmere books for over a decade and following the discourse for a while, but you always find a way to tell me something new or clarify a topic in a way that allows me to understand it better.
These videos are so underrated, you're a great presenter and the editing is on point.
Thank you so much!
That's a fascinating wob at the beginning about the nature of the Dor. When he says that it's super dense, I wonder if he's thinking like something more viscous than a liquid, like blood plasma, instead of the state of matter which is almost like air.
Is it christmas already? A Jasonioan upload? Well I'll be a monkey's uncle! Killer video dude! Way to go!
Thank you!
Bro, kwep it up! Your quickly becoming tye highest effort source of Cosmere info outside of the Coppermind! Love all the effort you put in to visualizing stuff. Sorry the algorithm is slow to pick you up but those of us who have seen ur work will always tout your praises! Ur the best, man!
Thank you! The videos would take SO much longer without the Coppermind and the Shard providing incredible articles with citations. They’re an invaluable research resource.
I hope the algorithm picks these up soon too. I do get it though, some of these cosmere topics are almost comically niche!
Again, thanks for the kind words. It’s always a joy to see your kind comments on these videos, @TheDiabeticGameMaster .
@@jasonioan haha. Well, I'm just trying to spread the good vibes and encouragement is all I can offer until I, eventually, get my money up. : )
Watching this video made me realize that I need to read Elantris again as I forgot about a lot of this stuff. Except forgery as I re-read Emperors soul fairly often
Honestly same. I re-read both for this video. It was maybe my second time through Elantris, but easily my 10th+ read of the Emperors Soul.
you snapped with this format
Love your videos so much. Can't wait for the next one.
Yay! Thank you!
Another Fantastic Video!
Wow, thanks!
Excellent video. Great quality and excellent presentation! Well done!
Glad you enjoyed it!
As usual, this was a fantastic video mate. Keep it up!
Thanks, will do!
This has become a really nice visual source of information, outside of text-based ones like the Coppermind and the 17th Shard. Very nice. Hope the algorithm favors this.
Awesome and detailed as always! Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
I literally found your channel half an hour ago and I was already looking forward to more videos. arrive just in time. Will there be videos for the rest of the investitures? or some mixtures between them. There are very few videos on the subject and it would be very interesting
First of all, welcome! The tentative roadmap is to make videos on the different places and magic systems as well as more entry level accessible content in the future. That said, I really enjoy the deeper stuff and will probably have to make some of those as well.
Jason! I come to you with a warning! A man named Jesse will comment “Sel Out” on this video! You must stop him before he does!
HOW?!? HOW DO I STOP HIM?!?

@@jessehughes8274 my replacement, I see. Sorry for beating you to the punch.
We need to popularize this channel. I wait eagerly for every video.
Duuuuude.
I do think the Selish Ghostbloods are the reason they have Dor and don't need Stormlight in gems anymore.
I love the idea that they think about the Ire structure after Urithiru comes back to life. Maybe even one of our people learns about powered structures and that reveals the secret!?
My theory on the 'limit' of Elantrians... I think that without Elantris (if it was entirely gone, not just poorly functioning) Arelon would be like any other nation, where anyone can learn the art and perform it. I think that what Elantris the Aon does is, takes all that power which should be spread across an entire people, and concentrates it in a few. So, my suspicion is that the number of Elantrians is capped at some percentage of living Arelish, because that's where the power comes from.
Making up some numbers to illustrate a point, let's say it takes the might of a thousand Arelish people concentrated in one person to become an Elantrian. If there are 8 million people in all of Arelon, that means there's enough juice that Elantris can currently power 8 thousand Elantrians.
Your videos are great bud. Glad you ertr on 17th shard cause I likely wouldn't have round you!
You put in so much effort into these videos and it shows. Great video and it helped explain some of the parts I didn't understand about the Dor
Glad you liked it! Thank you so much, I’m happy that all the effort I’m putting into these isn’t going unnoticed! :)
An other outstanding video! I am currently rereading Elantris and this gives some extra insight about everything happening with the magic's. Its especially hard to keep track of all different ones on Sel but thanks to you its a lot clearer again. Thanks!
PS: really hope the algorithm will pick you up (or maybe a shout out on the weekly updates) you deserve it!
Thank you! Im glad you liked it and Im glad it provided some insights for your reread! A shout out on the weekly update would be INSANE!
So effectively, “Raoden with prep time” can beat anyone or anything
It would take a lot of prep time and be very situational, but yeah it does seem like that.
Except aluminium cage 😂
Except Ishar hahaha
No, I figure he probably could beat Ishar like you say, the main advantage Ishar has is that he has already had 4,000 years of practice. That time advantage can be huge.
Wow, this was amazing.
Thank you so much!
Another amazing video!
Thanks again!
Great video, lots of great detail. Now I feel teased that Jason seems to have gained Elantrian abilities, but then only used them to draw one Aon! Hopefully he shows off more in the next video 😁
We shall see. I might be too far away from the Dor next time. I'd also like to report that the stamp didn't take for very long.
I look forward to these videos so much. Keep it up, dude! Enjoy Teod!
Thanks! We’ll see how long my stay is. I think Edosha needs me to go to Taldain soon (she got me a research visa).
As far as politics, in general I feel like the main forces in the future conflict will be Scadrial against Roshar. The Ire tried to steal Scadrial's Shard and suffered a humiliating defeat there, and they used something that looked very much like a fabrial with crystal and metal to try and detect the presence of Threnodites. I wonder if this implies that Sel will be on the Roshar side of the conflict? Of course this is contraindicated by Shai working for the Ghostbloods, which seem exceptionally antagonistic on Roshar.
Of course, the answer is prolly something like, no planet is a monolith, and the Ire might not represent all of Elantrians, let alone MaiPon. Maybe MaiPon and Arelon will end up on opposite sides of the cosmic conflict. Even Kelsier and Harmony, though they seem to have the same goal in mind, are almost openly in conflict with each other. And I mean Roshar is hogging the entire Cosmere's quota of secret societies.
The perspective that planets aren't monoliths is incredibly valuable. I do think in the future of the cosmere we'll see some planet wide governments so their outside influence may be more monolithic. I think the Ire have been kicking around the cognitive realm for a while, and I see them taking a more "silverlight" and academic role in the future of the cosmere while the ghostbloods recruit individuals. Simply given the size of Sel and the extent to which they think other nations are unimportant that we'll never see a unified Sel in space age cosmere politics.
@@jasonioan Yeah. Some places are different. Places where the overall population is small enough that you feel like it'll consolidate into a single nation before long. Honestly my guess for Scadrial is that the Malwish will simply conquer the Basin. On Roshar, in the past, the Knights were one organization, and they clearly have outsized power compared to the rest of Roshar. I wonder if that will continue to the modern day, and people will be a Radiant first, and a member of their own country second? With Dalinar at the helm, it's hard to imagine him allowing any surgebinder to operate outside of his control.
Late to this one but I still need to drop the obligatory comment for the algorithm lol we will blow this channel up
Let’s go! Thanks! 💪
That way you wouldn’t necessarily need the involvement of the Shards themselves in creating a new magic system!
Great video! You didn't mention the potion magic, which is my favorite which made me sad 😔 (though obviously we know nearly nothing about it so I understand why)
I just wish more info was available so I could talk about them more
these videos are awesome!! they have yet to get the attention they deserve. Thanks for putting them together and please keep em coming
Aside from that, could an Elantrian draw an Aon so complete that it would allow the whole Dor to flow from the Cognitive to the Physical Realms and take up the power of the two joined Shards?
I worry that a tear in the physical realm that big might have unforeseen consequences! That's a cool idea I've never considered before though. I also think the power is splintered, so it can't be picked up again. Thanks for the comment, and I hope you enjoyed the video :)
Thank you, a very good explanation. Despite having read Elantris and the Emperors soul twice it is quite hard to keep track of all of this. Especially the first part about Odium killing the other shards and stuffing their "corpses" into the cognitive realm. Where did you get this info? It was news to me.
Thank you! That info is found in the Selish System essay in Arcanum Unbounded as well as an epigraph in The way of Kings.
Man, I wonder if you can cheat and build a Soulstamp that turns you into an Elantrian for a very short period of time, just long enough to draw a few Aons - so you get a very powerful effect, but you don't pay the enormous Investiture cost Shai had to for a more long-term transformation. Essentially spell scrolls instead of taking wizard class levels.
um Spoiler?
14:31 as I read it the city is a giant geomantic glyph that reflects the shape of the land and the base symbol is that shape. they put another city on the other side of the world and there ability to cast would increase however I don't think Sanderson was going in that direction.
Do you ever stay inside?
Thanks for the vid as always!
Soooo I’m outside right now, but yes I do. 😅
Not enuf info on Dhakor. I cant wait to meet a Kandra/Dhakor monk!
I hadn’t even thought of that! A Dhakor powered Kandra would be crazy!
The Dor is crazy op under the right conditions.
It can even be used as
[Spoiler]
An analogue for allomantic metals as exhibited in The Lost Metal.
This leads me to suspect that it could bg used by someone with the right knowledge to seperate harmonium into atium and lerasium.
I also wouldn't be surprised if the Dor could be used to heal a dead eye Spren via the soul forging of a pseudo Nahel bond.
If they had enough time and were familiar enough with all these mechanics, I can totally see that being possible. Come to think of it, elantrians would be pretty knowledgeable of Spiritual damage so they might have a good shot at knowing how to restore a deadeye.
@jasonioan Restored Seons could even provide a useful frame of reference as they are essentially, Devotion Spren who were for all intents and purposes, deadeye. 😁
From my understanding of what was said in this video if the shards on sel where somehow reforged and picked up the source of the investiture for the selish magics would go from the cognitive to the spiritual and in doing so unlocking them from being so location dependent. Does that logic track?
I could see three possibilities. Either that would break all the magics because the source of power they were developed around would move, the magics that existed pre-splintering would be restored, or the existing magics would continue to function but they’d draw power from the spiritual realm like allomancy and function anywhere.
So yes, the logic does track
Why does the magic of the witch in Tress not degrade given that shes on another planet? It's very location based, so surely in another system, her magic would be almost nothing
How the Sorceress uses AonDor on Lumar isn’t ever fully explained explicitly in the text. However, I do have some ideas for how it works.
Aons are a sort of coding language, that language can shape and “program” how the Dor is used. In the Lost Metal, we see a map of the Basin being drawn with specific intent before Aons are able to be used. The map appears to serve as an adapter of sorts.
In Tress of the Emerald Sea chapter 60 (page 332 of the mass market release), the Sorceress has a map of the planet Lumar inscribed in metal on her floor. I would assume that the map seen there serves a similar purpose to what we saw in the lost metal. A function similar to the city of elantris itself. What’s not super clear to me is what investiture source she and Hoid are pulling from. It could be an artificial investiture field, it could be that they’re both using breaths (the sorceress is an awakener, but that doesn’t necessarily confirm she has Breaths anymore.)
That is a cool question btw
Hey Jason, quick question! Is it possible to mix the investiture of different magic systems, say, mix Breaths with purified Dor, to create a new magic? Or mix Stormlight with Lerassium or Atium to create something new and more potent?
I think it should be, for once a Twin Born of the same metal can compound. Storing an attribute in a metal using ferugemy, then accessing it 10 folt using Allomancy.
Hemalurgy is the magic system to steel "in essence" other magic systems. So using that, I think other Compounding can be achieved.
Just look at some things Hoid can do (spoiler alert for stormlight mistborn and Tress) he is a full mistborn, lightwever, has breaths of at least the third heightening. Also after Tress he has accees to the Dor and able to draw Aons. I think in the futere we will see many things done (by at least Hoid) that seem to be oudside any one Investerture type
😀
No warning for that Lost Metal spoiler 😢
My bad. Forgot to mark that one. That said, I don't think she goes by "Shai" in the lost metal so it's still a bit ambiguous. But yeah, probably should've marked that one
I got spoiled :(
Mistborn Era 2 are basically the only ones I haven't read.
Plasma is the opposite of dense, so that analogy to describe Dor doesn't make any sense.
That's what the Sanderman said. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@jasonioanYeah, I'm commenting on what the Brando Sando said. First he said "not plasma", but then he said "super dense, to the point that it's liquefied... so it's plasma, basically" and "it's kind of plasma-like". ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
