Biblically speaking, the women of Israel were responsible for embroidering the curtains of the Tent of Meeting and later those of the Temple, so that predates Christian use of embroidered liturgical textiles by thousands of years.

I never knew it had a name! My grandma used to do that. I’ll look to see if I still have any examples & send pictures of them to you.
