Societal Impact of Generative AI

It is important to be transparent about both the potential capabilities and the limitations of current generative AI technologies, says Merve Hickok, a renowned expert on AI policy, ethics, and governance at the University of Michigan School of Information. The ease of use of generative AI could serve fairness and equity, but it also makes it easier for those with malicious intent through misinformation, disinformation, widening the digital divide and deep fakes. We need to build public awareness and have inclusive debates about what we want our generative AI future to look like, Hickok says.
