I’m currently about halfway through this book and I am astonished that this great man’s legacy has been forgotten. I see the state of Vermont completely differently now. The story of Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain boys is required reading for any fans of the American Revolution

Vermont's history is truly rebellious and American.

General Burgoyne is oft quoted as saying that Vermonters were "the most active and rebellious race on the Continent... like a gathering storm"! (Letter to Germain, 1777)

Ethan Allen's posturing against NY only makes me more proud to be a Vermonter, forever grateful he's not a new Yorker. 🙏

What do you have against New Yorkers? I think they have made some significant contributions to the country, including capturing a British army at Saratoga in 1777, which led to French recognition of the American cause. They also constructed the Erie Canal, one of the greatest public works of all time. The discoverers of the two polio vaccines were New Yorkers. The motion picture industry was basically created by New Yorkers.

@@dennismiddlebrooks7027 I don't have anything against any fellow American citizen I quite like the people around the Adk, the reason for my comment is that New Yorks gov wanted to prevent Vermont from existing back during Ethan Allen's time and he prevented that from happening. Ny government today postures all the time towards Vermont and acts as if we are merely a breakaway sector that they influence, if I have to read one more article from some ding dong in NYC about it when they are utterly clueless about this state, ill barf... Also, you've got your history messed up, the battle of Saratoga was in NY but it was the continental army which consisted of men from all over not just new yorkers. For example, the final attack on the dug-in positions of the British was led by Arnold Benedict a man from Norwich Connecticut, Not New York. Anyways The reason I'm proud of Ethan Allen's posturing is because of how much Ny does it today so more in an ironic sense and not because I dislike anyone.

@@toxicmasculinity7798 You got your history messed up. It's Benedict Arnold, not Arnold Benedict. I am glad New England can boast of this traitor as one of their own. There were no troops from the southern colonies at Saratoga, and it was local militia which cut down trees to block Burgoyne's advance through the wilderness, contributing to his ultimate defeat. I read N.Y. newspapers and watch the news on t.v. and I do not recall ever hearing anything about NYS posturing all the time towards Vermont, whatever that may mean. To be honest, I doubt that many New Yorkers give a second thought to Vermont's internal affairs. I suspect, however, that Vermont is highly dependent on NYS tourism. Ca-ching!

We have been in this country for over 250 yrs up on the Connecticut River headwaters and my ancestor fought with Ethan Allen and is buried with a proud Revolutionary Headstone that says as much. At least one of every generation since has served this country including my daughter now. The Gods of the Hills are not the Gods of The Valleys and you shall understand this.

Vermonters are not easily intimidated. Resiliency is in their blood. We have huge helpful hearts and know when to mind our business. We strive to take care of our lands as the good lord wanted. We are some of the hardest working people in the world. With all that said we are not perfect but strive to be the best we can. I am blessed to live in a place where my fellow citizens don’t feel the need to compete with one another but try to be as helpful as possible so the entire community can benefit.

@@Raydensheraj Thanks for the tip. Stewart's book is a good reminder that Ethan Allen was not alone in his revolutionary religious ideas... he was, however, more outspoken than many of his peers about his unorthodox religious beliefs (resulting in being kicked out of towns!). He might have been louder than most, but he certainly was not the only one of his time with these beliefs.
