Until you know your spiritual history you will never make sense of Jesu's sayings. Jesus was talking about life in the spiritual world - not on earth. Another point on John 8:54 is that Jesus asserts that the Father glorifies him. We know from other scripture that God shares His Glory with NO ONE! (Therefore, Jesus the Son must be God. NO ONE has seen the Father, but the Son...(John1:18) and so we ALSO know the only GOD that has shown himself to man is Jesus.

It's the Holy Spirit that appears to everyone with faith. However the Holy Spirit is one with the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit can communicate through the Word in the mind of the faithfull or by sight, an angel. Also signs and wonders is witness of God's presence.

It amazes me how many times Jesus shows up in the old test (assumably in the flesh but its God so hard to assume anything lol).... question Sam why doesn't it just call him Jesus? I have a couple theories that it's because he didn't take on the role of Messiah Jesus Christ until he was born of the womb or maybe he knew the people wouldn't have understood in Abraham's time? but you have more studies than I any insights brother?
God's plan was never to reveal Jesus explicitly as the Saviour in the old Testament.

I think also the Word took on the name Jesus actually Yeshua (Yahweh save in Hebrew), to signify the role he was playing in saving mankind.
The whole point of the Bible is salvation for humans. Jesus is the focus of this whole story,v but God did not reveal everything at once. As you may have read in the Bible, Satan has tried many times to interfere with the salvation plan.
Examples
Israelites in Egypt the pharaoh wanted to kill all male born Hebrews.
Amalek attacked Israel in the desert.
The wars with Philistia.

Yehovah said He is the only God and the only saviour (yeshua in Hebrew) then He *manifested* as Yehoshua (Yehovah-saviour) to do exactly that.
Correctly translated this verse actually says "Before Abraham existed, I did". Because Jesus is the firstborn of all creation. He's the first one created before everything else was created. Both the sanctifier (Jesus) and the sanctified (the body) come from the same father! (Hebrews 2:11)

Its not a mistranslation though it is likely incorrect pronunciation because there is not a j in Hebrew meaning it's likely Yehova or Yaweh.. the tetragrammaton is YHWH, Hebrew does not have vowels and so our attempt to figure out the pronunciation is based on that and linguistics that still remain from ancient Hebrew.. no the JWs have nothing right, the name Jehovah was popularized in the 15th/16th century by a Catholic monk
Matthew chp 11 verse 27) "All things are delivered unto me by my Father, and no man knows the Son, but the Father; neither knows any man the Father, except the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him."
Matthew is totally in alignment with Jesus speaking in Revelations chp 1 verse 8. Were Jesus is saying I am the Alpha and Omega. The verse says "saith the Lord".
Then in the same chapter. In verse 17 and 18. Jesus says fear not; I am the first and the last;
Then in 18 "I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen, and have the keys of hades and of death."
How could Jesus be the First and Last and not be God and when did God die?

I believe that the Lord that spake to Abram was Jesus.
There were no capital letters in Hebrew, that came from the translators.

Until you know your spiritual history you will never make sense of Jesu's sayings. Jesus was talking about life in the spiritual world - not on earth. He was explaining that as God's Only Begotten Son and first born of creation he existed before the Heavenly Prince, who incarnated on earth as the human Abraham, was created. He was referring to a time far removed in history when all the souls, then living on earth in Satan's Kingdom, were part of a vast spiritual family living with their creator in the heavenly realms. Christians are so obsessed with the idea of gaining admittance to Heaven that they give little or no thought as to what they did so long ago that required Heaven to send a Redeemer to save them. They reject the unpleasant idea that they once sided with Lucifer in a rebellion against the throne of the rightful King of Heaven which resulted in their expulsion from the glory of Heaven.
