Aww, Anne Briggs playing with that baby! That makes this whole video worthwhile, for me at least, those two seconds of footage.

I could hardly believe that after all these years that I would see the Watersons & Anne Briggs singing above the Old Bluebell in Hull in 1965.
I was at Uni in Hull and they were a must on a Sunday.
happy days and I still shout Byker Hill after a few pints ofJennings!!

Their way of singing this song is so haunting. Beautiful.

Sadly, Lal recently passed away. Apparently, somewhere on youtube, you will find her daughter singing her composition "Fine Horseman", a song also covered by Anne Briggs.

Holy cow; Anne Briggs is in this. Nice to listen to her. A treat worth downloading, not just adding to favourites.

    HOLY &#$^%!!
It's really her, the dazzling star-child herself -- Anne Briggs, back in the day! ... and (hey RT!) she's even conscious! ... and seemingly sober as well! ... this is truly a miracle of youtube all right ...

Another place another time - who would smoke this much around singers now, let alone wth a tiny child in the room! Love the electric fire hung from a nail on th wall too.

Wonderful film, actually entitled "Travelling For A Living" - the whole thing is on a bonus DVD in the Free Reed Martin Carthy 4CD set. The shots of the "tour bus" (hah!) being started are priceless.

I went in this pub many a time when I was younger. I recognised the sign above the passage way. Its The Olde Blue Bell, down Alfred Gelder Street in Hull. I remember the room downstairs had pictures of old Hull FC and Hull Kingston Rovers teams hung on the walls. This was in the late 70s and I don't remember any folk club though. Shame really. It always a grotty pub though.

Could also be worth tracking down the series Folk Britannia. There are approx 4 or 5 on the tube now, including Anne Briggs & the Watersons, interviews with Bert Jansch, Davey Graham, Shirley Collins, Anne Briggs, Martin Carthy, etc etc. Worth while; I have downloaded the lot.

I got that wrong didn't I! The 4CD Watersons set with the DVD of "Travelling for a living" was actually "Mighty River of Song" on Topic. The good news is that one can still get the set on Amazon or eBay, the bad news is it's twice the Topic price (at least).

Which of the boys does the "hup" bit ? I keep rewinding but cannot get it. But it makes the chorus. Also , earlier on , how great to see Anne Briggs.

Have not heard the album it is on, but you can bet your boots.! The album was No More to the Dance & obviously not as super popular as Silly Sisters (they kept the name) but I am told good. Someone has posted a song on youtube called Agincourt Carol, apparently from this album. As the song was also done by Anne Briggs, who influenced all of them, you can count on this being the same song. There is also a posting on youtube of her daughter, Mary Gilhooley doing it.

justforever96 not too PC or healthy for the baby or the non-smokers in the room. A moment of silence for those who have breathing problems caused by second-hand smoke...
It always amazes me how many singers smoke. I guess the cig smoking is some kind if stress reliever from the long hours of touring each day... Ugh

    • @michaeligoe3935
      @michaeligoe3935 Před 7 lety

Hunter Mann I suppose it makes the singer's voice huskier but you're right ... smoking is totally disgusting.,

The term politically correct had not even been imagined at the time this video was made. The second hand smoke effect had not been recognized. Consider the culture of the time before you enforce your PC brain standards.
