- Rampant speculation is passing through the Bitcoin grapevine after the mention of a new initiative working to make Runes more functional through a new method of programability. What this new protocol addition will look like is not certain yet, as several actors are contributing ideas publicly to address this core market need. Why is programmability a big deal? This will unlock a whole new paradigm of interesting applications for Runes, outside of just minting tickers for meme speculation. Traditionally, this will introduce new market vectors of interest to the Runes economy and attract new developers to the space. Overall, this is a worthy pursuit just as Benny has displayed by extending BRC20s with a highly functional programming protocol with TAP. As a result of this, we have been able to execute on the early iteration of DMT and the first Non-arbitrary Tokens on Bitcoin. Will DMT live on Runes as a result of Runes 2.0 upgrades?

@@joedavidson7114 if the end game is pet rock then definitely not. But if the end game is BUIDL defi, metaverse etc then memes are inseparable; maybe even the greatest asset bc if number go up then that attracts degen liquidity. And the higher liquidity attracts the brains/devs because the opportunity is too high to pass on.
If Lowry is right then one of two scenarios will be the case within a few years. A) all non POW based consensus systems will perish and be replaced by something like what sovryn described or b) ethereum remains as a pseudo decentralized yet mostly oligarchic form of "decentralized" finance (with organizations like OFAC being largely in control), while sovryn type development takes care of actual decentralized systems...leading to some weird split world
