  • Join me for a walk around one of Scotland's most gorgeous villages, the picturesque, windswept community of St Abbs, just north of the English border. Settled for only around 200 years by fishermen living inland, this once-bustling seaside community has grown to become a popular tourist attraction, even making its way into one of the most successful films of all time, Avengers: Endgame!
    On our walk around St Abbs, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including St Abbs Harbour, Ebbcarrs Café, St Abbs Lifeboat Station, the Great East Coast Fishing Disaster Memorial, St Abbs Village Shop, St Abbs Village Putting Green, The Ebba Centre (former St Abbs Village School), and St Abbs Church.
    Thank you so much to the following sites for their help in my research of St Abbs: www.discoveringbritain.org/ac...

    Good evening! I'd like to say an enormous thank you to everyone for helping the channel to over 10,000 subscribers! It's a milestone I've been working hard towards over this year, and we couldn't have made it without so much wonderful support from you all, watching, liking, commenting and of course subscribing :) To say thank you, we'll be having a few special videos over the period between Christmas and New Year, including a much-requested behind the scenes video!
    But before we get to that point, we've got a walk around one of my favourite villages in Britain: St Abbs! Popularly known nowadays as the filming location for New Asgard in Avengers: Endgame, this achingly pretty fishing village has also long been a popular draw for scuba divers! There are huts on the harbour where you can book scuba trips and borrow equipment, and that can take you out into the sea to view some of Britain's most special underwater scenery, as the coast off St Abbs and Eyemouth has been made into a marine reserve :)

    A church built in 1892 is considered “Fairly New.”
    Here in Alberta it would be considered a historic building.
    Too funny.
    Great video as always.
    Thanks for the walk about.

      @LetsWalkUK  Před 2 lety +1

      Ha ha ha yes I suppose it's all just a bit of perspective! Of course 1892 still seems old to me, but when you compare it with the thousand year-old ruins and structures to be found all over Britain, it certainly seems like quite the spring chicken!
      Thank you so much for watching as always - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!

      Ha ha thank you so much! I think that milestone may be quite a long way away should we ever get there - but in the meantime I'll absolutely be making more and more videos every week :)

    This is indeed a absolutely stunning view , and in my imagination i could and i would live there , and i will have a amazing view over the scenery at the North Sea ! I didnt know that there was the Avengers crew had filming , but i will watching the movie a second time , to see the scenes in St Abbs ! Thanks for the video and have a nice day !

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  Před 2 lety +1

      Ooh certainly! The sea views in St Abbs are absolutely spectacular - after I finished filming this video I just sat overlooking the harbour for a quiet ponder while waiting for the bus - it's a place that really helps you to clear the mind :)
      Though certainly - the Avengers link is surprising, you'll notice some parallels in the movie scene, but much of the landscape behind St Abbs is edited with special effects!
      Thank you so much for watching and commenting as always - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!

      Ha ha it's a village that certainly escapes the view of many! If you're ever driving down into England on the A1 - the village is easy to reach by getting off around Coldingham/Eyemouth, so you may get the chance to visit some day :)
      Thank you so much for watching - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!

    What a pretty wee village but did we see even a single person on our walk? Good to see that the shop is hanging in there. I hope the local population support the shop but I would imagine they drive to the supermarkets for 99% of their shopping.
    Didn't see any sign of a pub or hotel and a quick google search didn't reveal any either. I'd have to guess that the holiday homes are mostly retired folks. For a village that relies on the tourist trade, there don't seem to be many opportunities to spend money.
    Enjoyed our walk though - Merry Christmas.😁

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  Před 2 lety +1

      It's a gorgeous village - and as you mention one without many of the classic amenities of a big tourist attraction! In the winter it's much quieter, you might have caught the figure of a few people working on the harbour, as well as a couple of people out walking the dog!
      But in the summer, the village can get nice and busy - and the two cafés in town along with the village shop are the places where many go to quench their thirst - it's a busy trade that serves St Abbs well in high season!
      Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video, and Merry Christmas to you too! 🎄

    to me St Abbs means the St Abbs Head in the Shipping Forecast .... whereabouts do the readings come from?
    looking forward to your special videos XX

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  Před 2 lety +2

      Ha ha I didn't know that St Abbs appears in the shipping forecast! But if the reading is at St Abbs Head, then that will be the headland just to the north of the village, where you'll find the lighthouse and the site of St. Ebba's alleged monastery! Though it's a bit of a walk from the centre of St Abbs, because you have to go back inland to avoid the cliff edges :)
      Thank you so much for watching and commenting as always - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video, and do stay tuned for those special uploads!

    The holiday home mob have damaged the place but it's no different to many other coastal villages..an unfortunate fact of life.
