      Still have the car, unfortunately its parked at the moment, its still in running driving condition but the c6 is a little slippy when its cold, so ill probably end up getting it rebuilt. But i don't have any plans to get rid of it! Ive also gotten really interested in saving older fords, ive had a few dentside fords, many LTD crown vics and box style town cars up here in alaska (people will take almost scrap value for 2wd cars/trucks here) I'm trying to get as much knowledge on this era of stuff cause nobody my age is really saving this stuff. At least i haven't seen too many people doing it

    Awesome! I just recently bought a '79 Town Car and so far it's my favorite car that I've ever owned. Pretty much bone stock and I plan on leaving that way. It's a total grandpa car and I love driving it, even though I'm only 20. There's nothing quite like the feeling of piloting a freaking boat through town!

    Much success with your travels to Alaska. Thanks for taking the time to make this video, us Lincoln fans enjoy a good story. I glad you appreciate this piece of Land Yacht history. Thanks for the tip about the window seal and potential fire. I'm going to look at one of these to buy and am glad to know to look over the seal well and check for signs of rain having gotten into the panel. I would not have thought of that. I drove a similar land yacht once when I was 15. It was my stepfather's seventy-something Mercury and we were on a trip to California, in 1981. It's neat to see a young person today with such an appreciation for these old cars.

      Thanks for the comment! Im 21 now, still live in alaska, still have that car but its been in storage. I ended up with another one of these sweet cars here in AK, its also a 79 but this one is cream colored with a burgandy interior. Its not as clean as my blue one but its nice. Some more tips i could offer on things to look out for, ive had the door panels off on both of mine, and a structural part of the windows is plastic and broke on my blue one, window goes completely loose and its an unobtainium peice. Brakes are another, mine were just rusted on the cream one. But the biggest advice is put your hand on the power seat motors. Feel if they're hot, when the seats have issues sometimes the problem can be on the motors themselves. On my blue lincoln one of the motors under the seat was scorching hot. I just pulled the power seat fuse and it solved that issue. The fuse pannel is under the dash on the drivers side all the way up aginst the firewall. The fuse is a big metal rectangle type. If its acting up just pull that. But you'll lose the horn and a dome light. Also if it has a sun roof, check it, its a horribly designed system with a single threaded cable that gets driven by a small motor in the roof, the roof on mh blue car failed because the cable stripped out and wouldn't engage the gear. Other than that just normal car things, look for leaks especially the hydro boost system and P/S. Oil seeps. These cars are cool because of all 4 disc brakes, which makes a pretty desirable hot rod rear end with it being a factory disc brake ford 9". I love these cars and they have they're quirks. But overall, they're pretty solid rigs.

      @@Catboy. Thanks for all the tips. I will pass this all along to my son who is going to go have a look at the car first for me because he's closer to it. This one does have the sun roof. I remember (even back in the 70s and 80s) people always said those were bad to leak and malfunction (on all cars that had them). The one on our MR2 doesn't leak, but it's just a pop-open.

    So glad mine doesn’t have that awful buzzer when I start it. Mine makes a bell dinging noise but it only works every once in a while. 😂 yours has the optional radio which is cool and the thermometer. Only other thing besides the bell on mine that doesn’t work is the clock and the cornering lamps. It’s gears need to be replaced but I haven’t a clue where to find replacements. And the lamps just don’t click on.

    Just make sure you replace all heater hoses especially the ones on top of your valve covers on your passenger side and the two small ones down there on top of your water pump those are the ones that tend to go out quick because those Motors run really hot and 8.1 compression or a torn compression that's a hot running engine but it's an awesome car and very extremely reliable

      No joke - I took my '79 out last spring just after pulling it out of storage to a Cars and Coffee event, and as soon as I got on the highway it started smoke-screening behind me. Popped the hood and saw coolant spraying from the water pump :( . Limped it home, steaming traffic as I went for 1.5 miles...found out they were these very short, stubby coolant lines. Thankfully an easy, simple fix, but made me check all the other hoses as well. Great, great cars.

    • @Catboy.
      @Catboy.  Před 3 lety +1

      I think they've gone under the radar for the most part. It has the legendary 9" rear end, a beefy c6 transmission and the earlier models had the 460 big block. This one has the less interesting 400 but it's still a decent engine. Sure its the same one in later 70s ford trucks but it's a solid engine if you keep good oil in it. There the best bang for your buck car you can get if you like luxery

      @Catboy.  Před 2 lety

      It should, i was a bit naive when i made this video, ive worked on a lot more vehicles, and mainly taken apart other 70s fords, old ford hydroboost systems will leak, its just something that happens, its not too hard to get replacement lines and its pretty simple to fix. Another thing id look at is brakes, ive had issues with most of the brake master cylinders I've had on these vehicles. Again not an expensive part, but something that can cause a headache
