Halides is a big part of what got me into this hobby 17 years ago, no lights still to this day can get that exact shimmer and perfect spectrum blending. My Kessils came close but not there yet.
And the issue with heat is not a problem as long as you dont keep them closed up in a hood, which also is ugly. Those Giesemann fixtures is beautiful.
We all know halides is growing coral just out of the box, plug and play, on and off thats it. No flipping switches in eternity like with leds.

MH are the GOAT, and I will use them until they just don't make them anymore, and I'd probably buy a 10 year supply of bulbs at the end, so I think could keep going until they can figure out something that looks as good as they do...on the other hand, I have been hearing this same song and dance since 2010 and everyone I talk to says that they are actually making a resurgence...They will end up being the vinyl record of aquarium lighting...

I've owned every, and I mean every, LED that's been released since 2010. Kessil, Ecotech, AI, Illumagic, ATI, all of them. I just swapped my leds today for my new Reef Brite 36 inch dual 260w de fixture. I can't believe how much better the tank looks. I was lost for words. The fish and Acropora responded instantly and all were happier. There will never be a better option than Metal Halide. I also get tired of hearing how much heat they put out. No they don't, the Reef Brite puts out very little. My water temp raised 1/2 degree. Of course my home is climate controlled to 70 degrees year round. Metal Halide is the way for me and I'm going to buy at least 10 years of bulbs.

Hamilton, phenix, and few others. They almost died maybe in the hobby industry. Zoos and public aquariums still use them. They also have displays that won’t accept led. And as leds prize themselves off the market halides are coming back. Just ordered 3 Bimini suns from Hamilton technology, 3 ballast and bulbs from coralvue. Since leds showed up been driving that last nail in that coffin but all you have accomplished is bent a 5 gallon bucket of nails.

I like the fact that the UV output from metal halides helps controls undesirable microbes.
Makes it a lot easier to keep corals like torches.
But I'm sure a light will be shining on this topic further in the future as people learn more about micro biome or listen to Chris at ACI and his first hand experience.
Noone listens to me I'm not important enough 😜
But led has a very huge flaw when it comes to UV that is constantly overlooked in seeing how poor it performs, I'm starting to think it's a topic intentionally avoided.

Metal halide lamps will likely always be around, even if for only very specific applications. A major use is in the entertainment industry and film industry. Specifically these are HMI lamps, which are a specialized version of metal halide, Often consuming thousands of watts, and available in sizes up to 24,000 watts at 2,300,000 lumens, Fellowspot, searchlights, stage lights and projectors are major uses of these lamps, and with efficiencies approaching 100 lumens per watt along with a color temperature of 5,600 to 6,000K and very compact light source, HMI lamps are very superior to the carbon arc lamps they replaced. In fact HMI was developed in the late 1960s by OSRAM at the request of German television producers for a safer and cleaner replacement for carbon arc lamps used in film production.

  • @Alex_Correa

The most efficient reef light in terms of spectrum and intensity is metal halide! Halides offer the very best rich spectrum from end to end in the safest way you can have, period. No other artificial light will provide such unique qualities to this date. Radiums are being produced every day and won't stop! Same with Giesemann!! ATI will always produce their T5s! Hamilton sold more halides' gear lately than in the many past years. In fact, they had to produce their entire line (bulbs, ballasts and fixtures) so much they sold last year. Are halides coming back, then? ReefBrite is also producing metal halides here in US and selling a lot, they say. Tullio Dellaquilla have published many times that many public aquariums are going back to halides due to their unpublished studies and experiments. Metal halide is the number one preferred by biologists around the globe. Tullio was the person who introduced LEDs to this hobby and metal halide is his preferred option to light any reef in most situations! Why are you guys misrepresenting such numbers? Is this a joke, or you didn't know?! Are you guys trying to manipulate the market and "kill" halides to sell more LEDs?? LOL! When you removed the halides from your online store I called BRS as a consumer to talk to Ryan and the guy said "Ryan had no direct line". So I asked to talk to a buyer... what a waste of time! The guy told me the main reason you removed the halides was because of "shelf space". LOL! Hamilton and ReefBrite were selling so much at that time they had to work hard producing more and more! You guys could easily display their pictures on the web site and ship from manufacturer, like Marine Depot, AquaCave and others always did. Did you know that? So shelf space shouldn't be the reason, right? LEDs will give you much more money per unit, and that could be the main reason. Is that true? A halide system will last a life time, you just need to change the bulbs. LED fixtures won't last as long. The right application of halides will provide the best results to any tank!! You used to sell Giesemann Spectra and you made a video showing the amazing uniform distribution of that fixture, remember? Now you say that size reflector is not good? Application is what dictates results. If you have those small reflectors over the right tank you will have the best results.
Metal halides and T5s sold for specific purposes like aquarium and horticultural industries won't be ever banned in any place in this planet, as far as I know. There have been some discussions in banning them in other categories. Those discussions have been going on for more than a decade and it never happens. There are many other things that governments are worried about than to ban metal halides and T5s. The majority of lights sold today are LEDs anyway. Why worry?
The way you both presented this market strategy (video) in such sarcastic atmosphere is sad! Sound like that in truth you are actually trying to "KILL" halides.

@@lukewheeler2361 Any LED fixture should be changed every 5 years, max. Halides are way cheaper in the long run then any LED. The BEST coral growers in the world, the ones that really care about the life of the animals and results, use halides to grow their corals because of the superb QUALITIES halides have. Excuses of costs are already debunked for most applications. Don't let LED propaganda wash your thoughts. Search and find the truth.
