      ive not heard any mention any where aobut the similarities between the bigeneration here and torchwoods finale whice saw the american detective at the end come back to life and repair himself like jack. basically people with jacks powers, and now two doctors. This at the time was when RTD also collab'ed with america possibly as a spin of seiries for the US.

      I too exclaimed "YES" when her name dropped. Since we may never see her again, River Song getting mentioned is certainly a criteria I take into account when considering if an episode is good or not. The Caretaker episode in series 8 was just ok, but River Song got mentioned in the same story as otters, so I love it lol.

      @stryker_t Looks like you have found an RTD shaped plot hole. The Doctor said he "invoked a superstition" in WBY. In universe, the superstition supposedly has its origins in salt's ability to kill Fendahleen.
      So, why would UNIT think it was effective when it only worked on Fendahleen and why did the Doctor forget it wasn't a superstition but a defense against a specific threat?

    The Master's Tooth Easter Egg is an even deeper cut than going back to The Last of The Timelords. The entire sequence was itself a reenactment of the conclusion of Flash Gordan where "someone" picks up Ming The Merciless's ring just before the end credits.

    Shooting moles was a reference to something Bernard Cribbins actually did. RTD said somewhere that he recalled a phone conversation where Cribbins' wife said he couldn't come to the phone straight away because he's "hanging out the window shooting moles", and RTD could hear the gunshots in the background.
    Also, the "GRADES" shop is actually a real hairdressers at that location, so maybe the reference to Michael Grade was unintentional.

      "Well, that's alright, then". He was being nasty.

    • @KyleWitten
      @KyleWitten Před 7 měsíci +1

      @klaxoncow They all survived in their own way. Just not how they expected to. Amy lived a long and happy life in the past. Clara is now essentially immortal until she returns to the Trap Street. Presumably after having lived for far more years than she would have had she never met The Doctor. And Bill is now a Cosmic entity running around the universe with Heather.
      But as for Martha - Donna already knew Martha's story. So nothing there for her to question "is all that true."
      And, as for not getting a mention later in the TARDIS alongside Adric, River and Sarah Jane. This was an anniversary special. Adric was the first main character to die (sorry, I don't give Katrina companion status - you have to be in more than one serial for that). River was The Doctor's wife. And Sarah Jane is almost universally regarded as the audience's favorite companion of the entire 60 year run.
      In other words, the three biggest gut punches for the audience to be reminded of. The deaths of Adric and River. And the real world death of Elisabeth Sladen.

      What I can't get over is the fact that going all the way back to The Last of The Timelords when the scene was "first" done, no one mentioned that the entire scene itself is an homage to Flash Gordon and Ming the Merciless's ring at the end of the film. When I watched Last of the Timelords as a new release episode, my initial reaction to seeing The Master's ring being picked up at the end was Flash by Queen from the motion picture soundtrack.
      After watching Flash Gordon, you'll never watch those scenes from Doctor Who again without hearing Freddie Mercury belt out in your head "Flash Ah-Ah". Every single time.

    “The devastation of Logopolis” was more like The Flux - a chunk of the universe getting destroyed, such as Traken, the planet Nyssa came from (and her father, whose body was taken by the Master). The “trial” was probably referring to the final 2nd Doctor episode but it could just as easily be the 6th Doctor; whereas the stranding on Earth was absolutely the suffering of the 3rd Doctor, and his first few seasons kept showing how he missed being able to travel, and he ran experiments to get his memory back of how to operate the TARDIS.

    So they talk about Wilf and learn that he's off shooting the moles, and the doctor says that it's alright because he gave the moles a forcefield, and that he loves them. Donna goes, "You love the moles?" "I love them!"
    This could very well be a nod to the Children in Need special in 2005. Rose Tyler just witnessed the doctor regenerate for the first time, from 9th to 10th, and the 10th, after setting course for the planet Barcelona, asks how does he look, before declaring, "No! No, no, no, don't tell me!" and begins to examine himself. He discovered he has hair, sideburns, that he's thinner than before but that he'll get used to it, and then his voice lowers slightly as he said, "I... have got... a mole... I can feel it, right between the shoulder blades... That's alright! Love the mole!"

    • @KyleWitten
      @KyleWitten Před 6 měsíci

      Adric was the first main character to die on screen in the franchise history. Plenty of other characters had died. Including Katrina (1st Doctor "companion" but she was only in two serials - can you really count her as a "main" character when she died before audiences really had a chance to get to know her? She doesn't even have her own Wikipedia entry - the only 1st Doctor "companion" not to have one).
      And, I get your reaction to Adric's death. I think that a lot of modern era fans who also grew up watching Classic Who, especially fans that have an aptitude for science and math, saw Adric as a POV character that brought them into the TARDIS. If one teenager can travel with The Doctor on the basis of being a science/math wiz, then any of us could.

    Good vid. I think you might have missed at least 2 and maybe 4 EEs. 1. The sparkling tooth is almost certainly an allusion to the sparkling teeth of Tony Curtis’s character in the 1965 Blake Edwards film “The Great Race.” 2. The ball-battle on that platform jutting out high over London, and the way the Toymaker teeters on its edge when he misses the ball, sure reminded me a lot of the duel between the 10th Doctor and the head Sycorax dude in 2005’s “The Christmas Invasion,” which was DT’s first appearance as the Doctor and also saw him, toward the end, sharing a festive meal with a companion - Rose Tyler - and her family, a nice bookend. 3. This one is an obscure one, I admit, but several of the Toymaker’s scenes had the feeling of a carnival sideshow, with him as the barker. Neil Patrick Harris’s most iconic stage role was as Lee Harvey Oswald/The Balladeer in the 2004 Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Assassins,” which was loosely set in a sideshow shooting gallery, where Harris’s character was more or less the barker. 4. Even more obscure, I admit, but stay with me, Harris’s archly over-the-top German accent could be a nod to the performance by Kenneth Mars as the comically Nazi playwright of “Springtime for Hitler” in Mel Brooks’s first feature film, 1967’s “The Producers.”

But it was THE DOCTOR, who came up with the idea to shoot the satelite down, the Doctor himself asked, if it can be shot down. So why would Kate need his permission, if not for the obvious reason - all other leaders were influenced by the Giggle and the Doctor held the highest rank as the President of Earth anyway.
