  • Located near the Mano bay of Sado Island Aikawa district, the Kasuga Wakamiya Shrine is a small shrine that was, according to some records, founded in 1611 as Hachiman Wakamiya but then was later renamed as Kasuga Wakamiya early in the Meiji Era.
Kasauga Wakamiya inshrines deities Ame-no-Koyane, the ancestral god of the Nakatomi clan and Fujiwara no Kamatari, the founder of the powerful Fujiwara clan. Also, Ame-no-Futodama-no-Mikoto, who both played an active role in bringing back Amaterasu Omikami, the goddess of the sun, who happens to be hidden in Ama-no-Iwato, a cave in Japanese mythology.
In 1884, Kasuga Wakamiya moved to its actual location which was featured in the 2013 movie, “Fly, Dakota, Fly!” that narrated the story of the English crew of a Douglas C-47 Skytrain (or Dakota), who had an emergency on the Island of Sado five months after the end of WWII.
All in all, Kasuga Wakamiya may not be one of Sado’s most memorable Shrines, but its unique location, surrounded by rice fields makes, at least for us at TokyoStreetView, something that it was worth sharing with you all.
