The actor who played Jerry (Jim O’Heir) said the writers wanted him to be the heel of the joke in scenes he was in to contrast how nice most of the other characters were normally (to great effect, I think). But then when you see Jerry’s personal life (his hot wife and stunning daughters) it throws people for even more of a loop. So even though he seems to be a loser at work, he’s a winner in life. Always loved this nuance in writing in Parks and Rec (after season 1 that is).
It's not really a smart way of writing, there's no subtlety, in my opinion, but it works, I guess. This show along with the office US, seinfeld and curb, not in that order, are the funniest for me.
If I’m not mistaken I heard somewhere that because they felt so bad with how his character was treated he was allowed to choose his home life/backstory and that’s why it’s so perfect

Honestly the best Jerry moment is him and Ben having a wholesome conversation at the gas station.
He told a joke that made Ben laugh as Tom was coming back to the car. Tom asked what they were laughing about and as Ben tried to say that Jerry told a funny joke Jerry interrupted him and said he farted in order to protect Ben from getting made fun of.
Ben and Jerry’s relationship is the best

Saddest when Leslie just tossed his painting away. Like art. WHYYYY
That's really more of a spontaneous Leslie thing if you really think about it.
After rewatching several times, coupled with other scenes showing Leslie's other interaction with other artworks by others, I am convinced that it is not just Leslie's own animosity towards Gary, but also reflects a fundamental incomprehension / non-appreciation / rejection of higher level art, _on her part_ including painting and at least some music (she also condemns Jerry's piano playing, as well as, I *think* other classical music that is played by others in another episode).
I feel that her character, among her other great many attributes and flaws, really is stunted in her ability to appreciate art, music and other, let's say, non-political things. However, rather than own up to the fact she doesn't understand what she is seeing/hearing, she instead exhibits some wild, cartoonish behavior to destroy or condemn it rather than reveal her ignorance to everyone else.
That is a major character flaw and one she needs to improve past the detailed/shown 'main arc' of the show (any improvement does not appear to be shown in the main episodes during the main timeline, and future flash-forwards are too brief and non-specific to give any inkling of whether her art knowledge/appreciation has improved in the further future, or not).
As a musician, her kind of (as I see it) really stupid and glaringly bad lack of ANY insight about almost any aspect of art, is also something that particularly rubs ME the wrong way whenever I see it in the show and makes me dislike her character more, because in my real-world experience, I find that people who cannot, or will not, appreciate ANYTHING about more 'classic' forms of art (i. e. they can't find anything to like about it at all, even a few things), either have serious emotional/moral deficiences, of which this non-appreciation becomes a 'red flag', or else they have such a completely different personality type than my own, that this is a good indicator that we will not fundamentally be able to get along as friends no matter how hard I try. This I have learned from many successive and confirming real-world examples.
Some of these folks, though, DO like / are moved by more modern and postmodern forms of art (more abstract paintings / noisier or dissonant music), and it DOES actually bring out deep emotions in them. This, I find admirable, although again it does mean we will probably have a very difficult time getting along. But- it means that because SOME art DOES move them on SOME level, they have that capacity within themselves to be moved, which means I feel they are more ethical and more human than they would be otherwise.
A good example of that is when Tom Haverford inadvertently discovers his love of abstract art during the mural competition. The colors and shapes touch and move something in him that he is so unused to knowing is there, or being in touch with, that he cannot fully articulate it and has a hard time dealing with it, but I believe this is a secret and yet crucial leap forward in his moral character during the course of the show. It's possible the abstract art, for him, actually is the key that unlocks him to gradually becoming a more responsible adult, a better person, and a better boyfriend and more worthy partner.

You know what. Taking in perspective Jerry's family and personal life and how absolutely perfect it is and how they are completely kind to everyone.
And remembering Jerry's mug catch when Leslie drops It in his house.
I sometimes think some of the clumsy stuff he did was intentional, just to provide a laugh and a frustration vent to his coworkers.

The more and more I experience management or not just others but myself too, the more and more I respect Ron Swanson. He's never belittled anyone in the show, not even Jerry. He has that statement about Jerry in the candid moment, yet, it's true. I hope I can emulate the best traits of both of those characters.
He was the one character whose sole purpose was to exist and expose how horrible all of the other characters were
Tom and April are the worst. Leslie, Ron, Donna, Ann and Andy only pile on due to peer pressure. Leslie and Ron in particular have actually stood up for Jerry like when Chris and Ben were looking for efficiencies - Leslie is like yeah your not firing Jerry that is out of the question.

Sam195 True. Also in later seasons I really liked how nice Ben was towards Jerry. It made me really happy when he declared his friendship with Jerry, even when he was told not to.

The writers felt bad about it too, which is why they have him the idyllic home-life he had.
These gags always made me laugh, because at the end of the day Jerry’s got them all fooled. He’s got a perfect life, and the moment it’s revealed in the show, you realize that Jerry doesn’t really mind all that much. It’s only some of the particularly nasty times they make fun of him that I feel bad. The urinal, and the exposure of his adoption were ones that never sat well with me, especially the urinal. I know that they might not have heard it was dedicated to his grandmother, but it’s still cruel. Even Ann laughed at him there, which makes me dislike her in that one Christmas episode where she locks them all out because they were mean to Jerry, when she herself has been very mean to him.

When Rick and Morty started, I somehow felt they based making fun of that Jerry to this one, and then named the character the same.

He actually puts in a tonload of effort into doing his job even though he messes it up sometimes... have you seen all the episodes? When is assigned a task, he jumps on it immediately with a breathtaking singlemindedness and drive. At some fundamental level he is really a perfect employee even though they are unwilling to give him more than a tiny shred of credit.
Ron is probably smarter due to how he was able to apply his skills.

Ben is nice to him, Ron is Ron so you can’t really tell, and Chris isn’t nice to him. It’s subtle but you can tell. (Edit: rewatched some of the moments, it's not even that subtle) Dude let Jerry almost choke to death.

He deserves better honestly. He's a loving father and husband, he cares for his friends and he always gives his all when he works. It's sad that he's being used as a fall guy by Tom (who deserves to be the one who's always made fun of)

Everytime they bullied Jerry/Gary it just felt unneccesarily cruel. I get that's the joke but 99% of the time his scenes just made me cringe because of how the others treated him, not from the embarrassing situations he ends up in. I really hate how almost nobody ever sticks up for him until some scenes later in the show, it pulls away from their own character development. It's a big blemish on an otherwise perfect show.

Jerry is a perfect example of why this show is flawless.
Every show has a character that everyone bullies/mocks (think Stewart from Big bang theory) but this show does it in a way that doesn't seem cruel whilst hoping it off with Jerry have a perfect life otherwise.
