You made some really good points in this one. As a former guitar instructor, with nearly a decade's experience, I would add to point 7: When you (the student) are bored, try to find the source of the boredom. Are you bored because you are playing the parts of the song you already know over and over again? It's time to tackle the most challenging parts of the song (I try to get students to tackle the most challenging parts of the song first so that they will be motivated to go ahead and learn the song once they have mastered these). Are you bored because you keep banging your head against the wall trying to play something you're not quite capable of yet? Like Adrian said, "break it down." Which part of the song is overly challenging to you? Create your own exercise from this part. Are you bored because you really have practiced all the parts enough to play them? Memorize and get it to speed!
I love the idea of doing the hardest bits first! If they can do that, they can do the rest right?! I’m mainly concerned with students or users here getting bored with things that are challenging, because they are essentially biting off more than they can chew, hopefully breaking it down will create a better feeling of progress! By the way, any reason you’re not teaching anymore?
Nothing to do with strictly learning a song but sometimes, when I think I can finally play the song, I force myself to play in a different tone. It's a great exercise for solos. And it can be challenging on part using open strings. Rockabilly solos in E or some travis picking parts are great exemples .. I try them in F. I always remember how hard it was to learn correctly the F part of "Race with the devil" without making mistakes I don't make in the E part.

The humming part is a great tip. I am like that, I hit a song hard over and over and then 'boring' and walk away.
Yeah you might want to take smaller portions of it, because then you get through that portion quicker so you can move onto the next and that feels shiny and new!

To listen carefully and for playing along at a slower tempo : Use the speed setup of CZcams. It's the kind of tool I would have dreamt of when young and learning how to play. But I use it intensively for my learning nowadays. Including on your tutorial video. I just slow down your intro playing when, sometimes, your detailed explanations are too slow for a experienced guitar player :-) (but certainly great for beginners). Even if the normal tempo is good for you, it is sometimes difficult to hear some chromatism without slowing the part down.

Excellent tips. The advantage to having technology like CZcams is the ability to slow down those insane Setzer and Heath licks I pull my hair over trying to figure out. Any tips on how to transcribe maybe some jazzier chords that are a bit hidden behind the drums and the bass?
That can be really challenging, I just try to focus on hearing the different notes, kinda one note at a time. It also helps though that I’ve worked through a lot of chord chemistry and inversions etc over the years, it’s usually not far from something I’ve come across! Also, tv jones filtertrons actually sound like there are more notes than what are being played because they have such a harmonic quality, that’s yet another challenge!
Bro... With all due respect... You know I love your playing and I love caravan but slow it down a bit... it's too rushed and also reduce the delay depth. The system can't pickup the note separation. Your great playing deserves better.

@@AdrianWhyte @AdrianWhyte Adrian would you mind if I made a comment, also hopefully constructive. Whilst of course there is some altruism here, understandably you'd like people to pickup on your Patreon courses. So with that in mind it doesn't come over very well when you sort of say "oh that was wrong but you know what I mean" ... it gives the impression of not really caring about the content. If you watch most of the better supported channels you'll see they edit the videos, cutting out mistakes and helping the flow. I appreciate that will take you longer but I think you'll grow the channel and increase your Patreon subscribers. Hope that is a fair comment, of course some people may like seeing the mistakes!!
PS. I'd second the comment about using a metronome on your videos... I've seen your live band videos and your playing is absolutely top notch, many of us really appreciate a real rock n roll channel but it's easy to go out of time without a band or backing track, especially when you have to think about camera angles, your vocab, what comes next, upload time, kids in the other room etc.!! Really appreciate the time your put into this.
