    @Garden Fundamentals I live in Zone 8A. I have not planted a garden in 3+ years due to my health. I am experimenting with germinating some seeds and placing them directly into the garden soil, instead of small pots. My grandparents had beautiful gardens and always planted seeds directly into the garden.

    Great video, glad I found you on maritime gardener, been gardening over 25 years and still picking up pointers from this

    Peas. beans, onion sets, garlic, shallots and potatoes are all pretty dependable beginner crops to grow. Add in some salad crops like lettuce, scallions, beetroot, and a few tumbling tomatoes in a few hanging baskets. That's a pretty good start for any beginner, and they should actually get something worthwhile.

    Great tip on the beans/peas combo. I'm really enjoying these longer videos.

    I try to get an early start on tomato & pepper plants by buying few of them as soon as they are in the stores. I usually transplant them into bigger pots and put them outside in a sunny spot close to the house. In this way I can leave them outside during the day to get sun but move them inside at night when the temperature drops.

    I live zone 6 LFD 4/30. Cold frame grew tomatoes and a pumpkin from seeds dropped last year. Tomatoes do this every year.. and they never get diseased. I usually pull them because there in a area I don't want them to grow. This year going to leave one.

    Beginning gardeners also miss out on succession planting to increase yield, it's better to plant lettuce, cilantro, beans. It spreads the risk that you planted on the wrong day.

    I multisow beetroot & radish in cell rays, 4-5 plants per cell & have excellent yields.

    I'm direct seeding most. But all ears
    An easy, nutritional veg, okra. An acquired taste, yes. But if you've good lawn soil, it easy as sticking seed in the ground.

    QUESTION: I hope you see this? I figured I would ask an expert. I was told that watering your plants with water that came from a water softener would not hurt your plants. I was under the impression because it has salt in the water it would kill your plants. The guy was adamant that it wouldn’t hurt my plants. I think he was trying to sell me a water softener, he had already checked my furnace and said by the way we now have added plumbing as something they would be able to help us with and suggested a water softener. So was he pulling my leg just trying to sell me something?❄️💚🙃

    • @Gardenfundamentals1
      @Gardenfundamentals1  Před rokem +2

      Don't use water from a water softener that uses salt. However, if installed correctly the kitchen sink and all outdoor taps will bypass the softener.

      @@Gardenfundamentals1 Same here in the north of Ireland. Water mains goes to the kitchen sink first. And almost all outdoor taps will be plumbed in right on the mains as it enters the house.

    Can't wait to garden.
    lol, me neither. Counting seeds, checking plastic pots, soil and grow-light bulbs, I sincerely am looking forward to the day when I can start sowing seeds.

      If you have mint put mint leaves around and on where you have sown the seed, mice cannot smell the seeds.👍🏻🤠

      Try chitting the seed first, only carrot,parsnip and potato need planting direct.👍🏻🤠
