- At 22 years of age, Jontavious Willis is already a formidable Blues talent. Largely self-taught, he has highly developed skills at Delta and Piedmont guitar styles, as well as playing banjo and harmonica. In 2015 his talent got the attention of Taj Mahal and Keb Mo, who took him on tour and helped him fund and produce his latest release Spectacular Class.
Like his mentors, he brings a keen sense for history and for the earlier musicians who created the music we call Blues. He says that Blues is the foundation of most American popular music, including Jazz, Rock and Rap.
This year Centrum Port Townsend named Jontavious Artistic Director for Acoustic Blues. Their Acoustic Blues Workshop happens July 26 through August 2, 2020.
His live set features a mix of originals and well-chosen covers, and this day he performed 2 of his own songs along with some Blues standards.

Mr. Willis, just taking another min to praise you and your gift. I am a player too but never captured this frame of historical blues as I wished in my early days. I also like your connection to the artists who inspire you. I know this is one great time for you to be promoting Columbus Ga in the presentation of the Ma Rainey movie. My great Grandmother knew her and Bessie Smith. My Great Grands grew up in Rome where Ma and Bessie assisted her in leaving because her mother passed away giving birth and her aunts were mean to her due to her mixed race, black and Cherokee Indian. I learned all of these songs and names of the artists because of her and if you are not booking interviews and redirecting light on your art at this time......I think you should at least consider it. You can tell I am old because I am actually hoping you read this stuff.......lol bless my old ass heart.

Just heard this for the first time this morning (my friend Jean Labaye posted this on Facebook). He is the real deal and one of the greatest talents in have heard in years. I hope to hear him live someday.

He must have gotten the secrets of delta blues first hand from some very old blues man. And the joyfull lyrics instead of "my baby left me". What a relief! The old blues is being saved from the curse of constant crying over life hardships.
I think he grew up in it, and he's a Piedmont player not Delta.
