I like how the drivers actually respect your presence on the track and won't go aggressive if you're blocking the line. A truly great game, Le Mans Races are true peak performance. I love this game!
I see nobody talking about the amazing race of Le Mans at the end of each season, I still remember the tension at the end of the chrono. almost perfect!

Fun fact & attention to detail: if by chance your team encounters Ravenwest, The Radio Engineer will disappointedly tell you to give up and to: "Just aim for 3rd place. There's no chance we'll beat them, it's raven west after all." "Ravenwest has already won, Sigh.. just do your best kid, You can't do any more than that." in the opening introduction of the race. They specifically say Ravenwest because they're are the best team by ranking and earnings. Overwhelmed, Powerless, driven to despair at the sight of Ravenwest, The engineer tells you to give up. This attention to detail and what I remembered the most, I know it by heart because to me, I think that this encounter with raven west and the engineer, absolutely gets my heart going to beat them. To try to make the radio engineer proud as he lost all hope and desire to win.
Compared to Forza Horizon 5 and their rating of 10/10 by IGN, this is what a true 10/10 racing game needs, a goal that you desperately want to achieve that everybody doubts, then the win will be a lot more meaningful, personal or not.
racedriver grid had the best replay system, able to slow down pause and even play in slow motion at a speed you choose and change camera angles to the point where you can read the manufacture logo on the rims and see the studs on the wheels its incredible little details that made this game so great

Seeing this just makes me think "my god, what a bullshit games we have today......", And this game has one thing i truly respect and its the fact that even the AI comit mistakes, they spins, they crash just like the player, its not those perfect AI that never crashes. #oldgamesarebetterthannewgames
remember that race track in San Francisco you race first time on the grey viper? some cars with difficult and not so strong suspension can have a suspension damage because of the jumps, Nissan skyline for example, some other cars are ok to jump just like that Dodge viper
Bro I could throw the Mustang Boss around that track with my eyes closed and not hit the barriers once, I played it so much. Mainly because of how the driving is just so satisfying in this game. I mean, the muscle cars would drift soooo buttery smooth.
This HAS to be one of the best racing games ever made. I bought it again on May 4th 2019 because I missed it so much. Toyota need to return to this series at some point because their absence has disappointed many. I was blown away by this game when I first played it! This game nailed every aspect!

Yep, and this fact is f*cking sad. Whenever I play a racing game, I always check the gearchange animation and I always get the conclusion: "Yep, again the driver just put his/her hand on the knob and magickly changes gear"
Shift had visible gear changes but the stick can move before the hand even touches it. In Forza Motorsport 6 the driver doesn't pull some sequential shifters at all, just thin air.
This should have been the arcade racing game standard. It had everything. Team management, good cars, good tracks, worldwide racing from the west to east through Europe, excellent atmosphere. And look what the racing games looks like nowadays.

NFS High Stakes & Porsche Unleashed (1999, 2000) do already have heavy cosmetic and mechanical damage systems, but these were dropped with Hot Pursuit 2.
GRID original is the best racer I've ever played. The way the cars handle is just perfect for fun gameplay and really encourages aggressive/courageous driving. The damage model is sooo satisfying, the Flashbacks and video editor are awesome and the variety of content is too. However, one of the best aspects of it which I just haven't found in a more recent game (and which the sequels and reboot just don't seem to understand) is the, I guess you could call it; "team gameplay". Seeing your garage get bigger, choosing a team name, a teammate, a livery and colours, the best sponsorships, having your actual name and local currency being used, saving enough money to finally buy your own car for the 24-hr Le Mans race, how your team managers talk to you during and after races, beating those Ravenwest a-holes etc. Compare this to the flat, lifeless menus of other games which are just "click" *race* "done!" do it again... and you can see it's lost something significant. The racing is the main event sure, but these little things were an important addition which showcased a little bit more of the race-driver experience. Other games do *some* of this stuff but GRID had it all at once. And it was reeeaaly stylish to boot. I was kind of hoping they'd double down on it with the reboot. Bring back that team manager lady and of course the Race Engineer who always sounded like he was one more race away from retirement, maybe allow you to walk around the garage and put together a bigger team... but nah. Real missed opportunity.

I always found the race engineers voice very calming and endearing to listen to, everytime I hear his voice it brings me straight back to my childhood.
It think you've seen it already but since it wasn't in the video in gonna say it. If you watch the pedals, you can see the driver regulate the pressure based on how much you are pushing and also uses the clutch
- Loudspeaker announcers speak the language local to the track - Wheel blur effect was expensive but looks better than many still - Feeling of real weight to the cars, give to the tires and suspension - Instant replay / rewind cam before they were standard - Even the driver's feet are properly animated
I just noticed in my new pc I have the same problems you had! Stuttering in the same exact places and trees flickering sometimes (I don't rememeber that when I first played it!) Gret video btw. The damage model is still unmatched nowadays!
I've been playing through this game recently and absolutely loving it! Back in the day we had Grid on PS3 with a Logitech G25, taking turns to see who could get the biggest drift score - naturally it was me! ;D Currently, it doesn't play well with my Thrustmaster T300 RS but the game is superb fun on a controller. This is a great video showcasing these epic details, you've earned a sub from me - love the content. 💯 I wish more recent racing games would continue with these little details that truly make the games special. 🙏
Grid was the first racing game I played where in a random race a driver ahead had a tyre blowout and flipped into the air. Mind blowing. How many racing games still have nothing like that?
4:45 that shifting animation is also in gran turismo sports . Now dirt 2.0 crowds don't even move even cars is in the crowded spot . Driver grip crowds react to crash even if they are standing back of barriers .
This and pgr2 are some of the most fun and best feeling racers still, even the new grid that came out which was supposed to be like this one doesnt feel as good.

I still have this game lol, and I have so many of the car mods for gta SA lol. The only thing this game needed was a solid modding community, would have loved to see ray tracing graphics mod for this game and some nice map mods with a some handling mods and some car mods, then this would have been more epic, great video man.
The fact that you have a team mate and he talks. Idk this game was way ahead of its time. I would totally play it again but I can't find it, this and dirt 2 from 2009, both equally great racing games, if you ask me they're still the best to this date. If they remaste them with new graphics I'll pay over $100 to buy each.
this game is the best in racing games. it used low end graphic cards but you could still get amazing effects. i came across no racing game not requiring high to mid end GPU to play. You guys see the roatating rear wheel in the replay session, which is the most realistic one i saw amongst all racing games including those in 2022 , required RTX series GPU to play. However, this is also the last masterpiece Codemaster made. The subsequent grid2, grid auto, grid 2019 ... lost most the good things that Race Driver had.
Good old times free style drifting. One of the best Drift physics if not the best in 2008 and still better than some of today's games. I did enjoy Grid2 circuit race physics (1000+online races) but drift is just meh. NFS2015 drift physics is pretty good but too arcade-ish for my liking (still spent 250+ hrs with it though). I would say best drift physics imo is AC for realistic and GRID for fun arcade-ish. GT might be up there with AC but I never played. For those who never played GRID you have to.
When I got my first laptop in 2010, this was one of the first games I tried on it. Since then, I finish the grid world, uninstall the game, install and this cycle goes on. The graphics, cockpit view, variety of the vehicles and tracks (LE MANS !!!), the A.I. are just great. I also played GRID 2 and Autosport but none of them pass this game (I like Autosport though).
I want a Racedriver grid replacement because the servers are offline ? What should I do ? I was immensely disappointed with grid 2 and grid 2019, let alone autosport

I liked that this game featured some of the D1GP cars like Ueno's Z30 Soarer, Yoshioka's AE86, Miki's S15, Suenaga's FD3S, Kumakubo's GDB and more.

It is possible but EA executives do not have feet on ground. They can make tonnes of money by just releasing that but they will not.

Crashes are still one of the weakest aspects in most racing games (even some crash-focused ones), but not this one.
I was able to play it at its launch and it was unique, until today it has better details than other games, Codemasters did an excellent job

The fact that you have a team mate and he talks. Idk this game was way ahead of its time. I would totally play it again but I can't find it, this and dirt 2 from 2009, both equally great racing games, if you ask me they're still the best to this date. If they remaste them with new graphics I'll pay over $100 to buy each.

this game is the best in racing games. it used low end graphic cards but you could still get amazing effects. i came across no racing game not requiring high to mid end GPU to play. You guys see the roatating rear wheel in the replay session, which is the most realistic one i saw amongst all racing games including those in 2022 , required RTX series GPU to play. However, this is also the last masterpiece Codemaster made. The subsequent grid2, grid auto, grid 2019 ... lost most the good things that Race Driver had.

Good old times free style drifting. One of the best Drift physics if not the best in 2008 and still better than some of today's games. I did enjoy Grid2 circuit race physics (1000+online races) but drift is just meh. NFS2015 drift physics is pretty good but too arcade-ish for my liking (still spent 250+ hrs with it though). I would say best drift physics imo is AC for realistic and GRID for fun arcade-ish. GT might be up there with AC but I never played. For those who never played GRID you have to.
When I got my first laptop in 2010, this was one of the first games I tried on it. Since then, I finish the grid world, uninstall the game, install and this cycle goes on. The graphics, cockpit view, variety of the vehicles and tracks (LE MANS !!!), the A.I. are just great. I also played GRID 2 and Autosport but none of them pass this game (I like Autosport though).
