- In this video we show you how to make whiskey with a bit of help from our friend, and master distiller, Jesse Wilson at @StillIt. Of course, it's illegal to distill whiskey at home in the United States and we don't have an actual commercial distillery. To solve this problem, Jesse came all the way to the United States, made a whiskey mash with us, then traveled back to New Zealand (where he lives) to recreate the mash and distill it.
Specifically we made Tennessee style whiskey, which is charcoal filtered using the Lincoln County process.
You'll need to watch part two for distillation, filtering, aging, and bottling: • Distilling Tennessee S...

I can just imagine Jesse traveling all the way to New Zealand with a bucket of mash 😂
Overhead stowage
Was great to work with you guys on this! Super keen to do it again :)
neck beard whiskey
I had a dream years ago where I owned my own whiskey company. I figure I should learn how to make whiskey.
The hecto prefix denotes a factor of one hundred (i.e. Hectolitre = 100 Litre). Kilo denotes a factor of one thousand (e.g. Kilolitre = 1000 litre).
A hectoliter is 100 L
Neat
thank you
The worlds and beards have just collided. It's great seeing my favourite channel identities in the same vid - love it. Even the wife who is a casual watcher wanted to know what was going on - haha
The pseudo "reality tv drama" was a nice touch. You guys are great.🤣
This fawking video is fantastic! I learned so much too. Thanks for having Jesse on your channel. Great work fellas!
Nice. Hail ! Hail ! The gangs all there. Good to see everyone everywhere all at once. 🙂
I find it fun now knowing I've probably been sipping on a cider across the street while you guys have been filming at some point since I moved here lol
This is super sick.
Thank you
If something don’t go wrong you not doing it right 🔥
I also live in "New Zealand". Lets do this! 😆
I Plan On Doing A Cinnamon 7 Pot Primo Whiskey! I Am Here Learning! 😄
always down to collab!
Collab FTW, especially when you make it that much fun
those tacos looked bussin !
It’s not illegal you just need a permit from atf and have property large enough to place still 500 ft from any other major buildings. I’m sure there are a half dozen other rules.
I don't recall, how much water to the mash bill?
Be kind and check recipe.
4:42. I rather like that stainless pitcher. ( I’m guessing it’s stainless)
Yup. It’s real nice
Just did some research and what I can find is that the only thing Tennessee has to do differently is Charcoal Filter the whiskey 😂
We are allowed to make our own wine in America. We can brew our own beer. Hell, we can even grow our own weed in many states, but distilling a drop of spirits remains a felony unless you have a butt-load of expensive permits and licenses from the state and federal government. It is just plain STUPID.
Other than weed, the same is true in the UK, but as a chemist, I get it. Distilling requires heating ethanol to boiling. You're literally making ethanol gas. That stuff isn't exactly the best to breathe, and worse, it's very flammable, and again, you're doing the whole process around heat. If it's any kind of somewhat large scale, that ethanol escaping and igniting could at best cause a small fire, at worst cause an explosion that injures somebody, perhaps even your neighbours. The government just wants to send out experts to make sure your setup isn't putting anyone in danger.
Haven't finished watching yet but I'm assuming they are using Amylase according to the initial ingredient list.. I'm not sure how they are converting 16 pounds flaked corn with a few pounds of malt
If we assume the two row has 140L and rye malt has 110L than it gives them an overall of 25.6L. In general, the minimum amount needed to convert all starches would be 30L so the recipe is lacking diastatic power for sure but not as much as it may seem.
Jesse has a video explaining this: czcams.com/video/tup91DZwb20/video.html
True. Thanks for the link btw will definitely check that out
Have you ever just been chilling, then get a slap of "I wonder how I do ______?" In the most random times and ways?
Reupload?
Can anyone explain the legalities of why you can make but not distill
Well I think I just figured out what I’m gonna do when I retire
"Hypothetically", you could just call on the liquor fairy.
Is that a bearded reference I see...
@@StillIt "Hypothetically"
Well Distilling laws are different from state to state as in MAINE were I live which is last I checked has always allowed Citizens to Distill up to 500 gallons of liquor per year for personal consumption.
Illegal under Federal law in all 50 states.
This is when the feds enter the chat
Shutup ATF agent!
FYI hectoliter is a hundred liters.
Whats 'two row"?
Tennessee should become the first state to fully legalize home distilling...even for sale. However, for health and safety reasons such products should be required to be marked and labeled with "May Contain Impurities" and so on.
I guess as soon as the camera was off they went and dug up all that corn for their second Gen sour mash.... no? Ok. Wink*
There’s about 8 -9 great states in America where you can make moonshine, Whiskey for personal use. It’s still illegal on federal level, like marijuana. On the list wasn’t Kentucky & Tennessee.
Glad to be in Missouri
Federally it is illegal to make in any states.but in Texas locally if you. Don't sell it and you make it for personal use. It is legal and they will not do anything by local authorities to arrest you. I checked of the sheriff's department.
Damn, all that wash went to waste. Right!? Wink, wink :D
We distill in Oregon, just can't sell it to anyone.
Bars
i like living in NZ :)
100l copper electric still in my laundry.i do 100l wash which gives me enough low wines to run in my 25L pot/reflux still.
You can 100% distill
What’s not illegal in the USA 🇺🇸?
Invading the country.
So- somebody’s flying halfway round the globe with a 5 gal. bucket of fermented mash….for what? Male a bottle of maybe decent hooch?
Controversy corner over here - you can carry a gun into a public place in Tennessee… But you can’t boil sugary water and make “whisky”. Thats mind boggling.
Well, maybe because you could pour that boiling solution on someone and kill him? But seriously, they need tax(es) and quite few of them.
Just added drama .... anyone in the USA can distill anything, just like you can collect rain water. The SALE of said distilled items ... that is different.
Old women making porridge yet sounding like it's a family chicken soup.
It's legal to own a still in Missouri and distill up to 200 gallons a year for personal use.
Illegal under Federal law in all 50 states.
But federally it's illegal. Kinda like the marijuana debates, legally in state but feds are a no no
@@thebird36 Only if you go to transport it across state lines and engage in commerce can the feds get involved. It's a thing called jurisdiction and you are under state jurisdiction.
Farm use most likely (fuel).
@@HeartPumper You can read the law yourself since it clearly states, "manufacture intoxicating liquor".
My comment gets deleted for specifying the exact law. It's either Clawhammer or CZcams that's doing it.
Yes, yes, we know. "Rye Wheat" is not a thing... 🤦♂
Wow…. I hate gun laws and now I find out the ATF doesn’t let us make whiskey too… so much for freedom 😭
not illegal ,u only need to pay tax
Nope.
You need a license to distill alcohol per the feds. And to get that license you need a brick and mortar. Unless it's for fuel
They are so unclean
