- Authenticating an original 1950’s Gibson PAF pickup.
Showing the basics of what to look for on an old PAF, and how they differ from replicas or fakes
If you have a question about a vintage pickup, or need one repaired / restored, feel free to send me an email at zach@brandonwoundpickups.com
I’d be happy to watch a 25 minute video. Well done very Informative.
I accidentally made a similar PAF sound when I miswired an Alnico 5 9K Bridge humbucker and resulted in 4.5K output with a ground noise. However, the sound was between a humbucker and a single coil...what an amazing findings..though its a bit thinner sounding that PAFs.
Excellent video. Blessings.
Good video. Helped me authenticate the early pats in my 65 335.
THANKS 🙏👍 I Have Questions this HELPS 🙂
I just saw a video with Neil Schon had his fender stratocaster with this pickup...and Floyd Rose.... And he had it in the middle position and the selecter on the bridge pickup on clean channel of amp and it was just great sounding.
There's a way to make them stickers and tape glow so don't always go by that.
Thanks a lot for this very good video, you are really the specialist. I will check my 2 pickups as you adviced. But I think mine are Custombuckers, because they are looking too young.
Great video! Is there a black light flashlight you recommend? Thanks!
Thank you!

Interesting Video. Thanks very much. ✌🏼 I am confused with some readings of PAF´s and advertising. Have 3 pairs. Bridge is around 13.5 K, Neck around 7.7 K. One advertising says with this reading, that they are "well balanced". What does that mean? Thanks again ✌🏼
Killer! Thanx.
Hey my pickup have all markings of original PAF the tape is glowing but the sticker glow only on outside clear pat of the sticker . if you give me your email i would send you pictures . pickup sound like real PAF . out of this planet . ps how patent number sticker glow ?
Hi Zach, thanks for this great video - I have 2 PAFs that I would like some help making sure are legit, what is the best way to get in touch?
The best way is to send me an email to zach@brandonwoundpickups.com thanks!
@@heatstreak1 I sent you an email as well
man this video is helpful, still i have trouble ID-ing a potential 60s one since i can't find any wire comparison pictures anywhere!
would you mind me sending you pictures to make sure?
Go right ahead! happy to help out. Send me an email to zach@brandonwoundpickups.com
Where are the “double black leads”?
How do PAF’s compare to early patent no. pickup’s?
I have an all original ‘62 Les Paul (LP/SG) that does not have PAF’s. Could Gibson have replaced the stickers once the patent was approved?
The early patent number pickups are exactly the same as the later pafs (1960-1963ish for nickel) not uncommon to actually see one of each in 62-63. At that time it is the same pickup just with a different decal
What about the hole sizes?
Hi, how many conductor wires on a vintage PAF? 2 or 4? Thank you
Why would a pickup from the 1950s have four-conductor wire?
Just play safe and play authentic bruh
Not to be "that guy" but nearly every example you reference ends with you saying "but not always" or "sometimes it's questionable" or "this is not uncommon" or "Gibson did use them sometimes"...... Etc Etc Etc. So your tutorial on identifying OEM pickups leaves a lot to be desired. Of all of your specific examples were nearly always contradicted with an exception to the example.
Unfortunately that’s how it is with these as they were extremely inconsistent. Although most fakes don’t have any of the things I mention, the main takeaway should’ve been if you see those things I mentioned but still aren’t sure, ask me in an email
Well done video. We will also talk about the wire colors going into the coils, black and black and black and white big distinction between PAF some patent numbers.
