I see the difference between Goofy and Pluto similar to the differences between Humans and Chimps, Gorillas, Bonobos, etc
For reference, the original meaning of “odd” was basically “unequal.” The “odds and evens” sense comes from the image of splitting that number of objects into two piles-if the piles would be even/equal they’re “evens,” if there’d be one odd piece left over they’re odd. I don't know why people get confused about Goofy and Pluto. Yes, they're both Canines, but humans are Apes and we keep gorillas and orangutangs in zoos, and some people keep chimps as pets, or have in the past. Thats basically the same thing. They may share a common ancestor, but they're different species.
The difference is pretty simple in that Goofy is sapient, he speaks, he wears clothes, etc- he's for all intents and purposes a human character that's just stylized as a dog, while normal-ass versions of dogs also exist in the settings, Pluto being one of them because he doesn't completely do all those things. When Pluto does anything like that, he's depicted in the same way of "look it's doing people things".
