    For people who are interested in cargo racks, one thing to KEEP IN MIND and to pay attention to is the weight you're adding onto your van's load capacity. I got a box in the back of my camper for all my outdoor stuff and it's great, but adding too much weight is very easy and I didn't realize I was disbalancing the way my van handles weight, travelling full time with it. After a couple of years with my cargo box, the rear differential axle got used more than it would without rear end weight, and other small problems can arise too by having a cargo rack positioned further away from the back of the vehicle. Just something I thought I'd share from my experience!

    Hey Bob, The advantage I see with the bike rack dropping down is this: You want to load your bike. * Drop the bike rack, swiveled down and toward the back. Have a short piece of rope handy, I just put mine in my back pocket. * Roll the bike to the carrier, lining it up, wheels next to the slots where those wheels will go. * Tie the top of the bike to the upright so it can move up or down a bit, but won't flop down on top of you. It is leaning toward the back a bit. * the slots for the wheels are low to the ground, and you maneuver them into the slots one at a time. The distance you have to lift is shorter, so you don't have to go into a squat as deep. The deeper the squat, the lower mechanical advantage. A shorter lift will be easier. (I can't explain here how to ensure that the bike is secure from falling toward the back. It is a basic physics application). * With the wheels in their slots, push the top of the bike towards the front, and into the top hook that secures the top of the bike to the bike rack, and secure the top of the bike. * Push from the top to rotate the bike rack up, and hear the snap of the rack securing into the frame. * Secure bike: velcro down the wheels, lock the rotational aspect of the rack to the frame, leave the rope if you like. You will need it to secure the bike when you tilt the rack to remove the bike. * I may have neglected some details. I hope this is helpful.

    Im not sold on fat tire bikes for most uses. I took a folding electric mountain bike with standard mountain bike tires to Burning man the year the Sonder's bike came out. I fully expected the Sonder's to be great in the soft sand What I found was the opposite, they seemed to struggle while I just rode through it. I suspect the weight is a factor, and again, Im not sold on the fat tires. They look cool though. The folding bike fit in the trunk of my Honda Civic. No rack needed. The bike rides on top of a pickup tool box I have on the back of my RV, you can see it on my opening video, and the video Bob did on my RV. Racks are nice, but not owning one is nicer.

    I know this is like comparing apples and oranges but, you can purchase a 5 X 10 utility trailer for $600.00 at Lowes, etc. It sure seems expensive for what it does. Something that can save you a few dollars is to go to a Vo-Tech school and pay for the materials and the shop will build you one with no labor charge. Just a suggestion for those looking to save some money.

Did your bolt catch the threads on first try? Or did you have to wobble it to get it to work. I’m very frustrated with this right now. Just want to get it installed. @GrantSR Před 5 lety +1

    I'm glad you covered using a cover. A lot of people don't realize the evikes cannot be left out in the rain or they will get ruined.
    Unfortunately the need for a cover is the main thing stopping me from getting an e-bike on a rack on the back of my minivan. I really like to be able to see out my rear window.
    In the end, I've have determined that it would take me almost exactly the same amount of time to get my rig ready to move as it would take me to get a bike down off of a rack. Plus, by the time I've bought an e-bike that would be appropriate for my needs, and the racks like you have shown, and the cover, and like three locks, I will have spent as much money as I could live on for about 3 years.

    **PLEASE KEEP IN MIND** This type of bike rack still needs you to tie down the curvered hold down handle!! I own this type of rack. If you don't tie it down and go over any type large bumps exspecailly speed bumps the bike will go down because of weight and the bike will come out of the hook. Your nice e-bike will be on the street. I was EXTREMELY lucky my Sondors Rockstar didn't end up on the street after going over a speed bump. I was looking in rear view mirror and stopped. My Rockstar had come out from of the hook and was hanging by a thread. Lucky I had a tie down strap to tie the hook down on my way back home.

    I doubt this would work with the barn doors on the back of my rig. Seems like everyone has a lift gate these days.

    Swing out hitch, great idea. US sellers seem unwilling to ship to UK, so if anyone knows of a similar product that's readily available in the UK please comment here.

    I'm a car dweller. The bike was wider than my car so when using the black bike cover it obscured all my back lights. Driving at night was then out of the question. Just a note to my fellow travellers. Stay safe.

      I hear you, a company does make car magnetic red lense tail and brake lights that wire to your trailer hitch. We used to have to put them on cars we towed on our big two car towing rig. Maybe this will help you out, it will diffently keep you legal if you can attach the magnetic lights onto the rack, mounts, or bike. Check out wreckers, car and truck towing, etc. I hope this helps you.

    2 covers would solve everything, the second cover attaches from the bottom up. Complete coverage from the elements

    With a rack, etc what are the laws about the tags?

    • @VonBluesman
      @VonBluesman Před 5 lety

      Every state law requires that your license plate must be unobstructed and readable, most require the plate have a light to illuminate the plate as well.
