Highgate London Tour

- I took a little walking tour in North London around the Highgate postcode: N6, around Highgate village and the surrounding area and made this video for anyone interested in the area.
This tour briefly shows the following areas and things:
- Highgate tube / underground station
- Jacksons Lane theatre and arts centre building (on Jackson's Lane, as viewed from Archway Road)
- Poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge ("the sage of Highgate")'s house, at number 3 The Grove, Highgate, which was also the residence of LB Priestley.
- The Flask pub, where poets like Lord Byron, Shelley and Keats are said to have visited when they came by to see their fellow literary friend, Coleridge
- Highgate village centre
- Highgate school (where TS Eliot taught French and Latin)
- The picturesque Gatehouse Inn where Charles Dickens and Lord Byron are said to have visited for a drink.
- Pond Square (which no longer contains any ponds)
- Highgate's URC church
- Highgate High Street (featuring local shops and pubs like The Highgate Pantry, Grazyna, The Village Jewller, The Prince of Wales pub, Oxfam, BBC3 hairdressers, The Angel Inn, Limone, Face it and The Highgate Bookshop)
- Some classic red double decker London Buses
- Waterlow Park (featuring its tennis courts, wild blackberries, its 3 ponds: lower, middle and upper pond, its duck, pigeon and turtle residents, dog visitors, its playground, its Kitchen garden compelte with beautiful display of sunflowers and lots of veggies and flowers in the vegetable patch, Lauderdale House and its gardens including a little fountain)
- Saint / St Joseph's RC Church
- Highgate cemetery (shown here only very briefly - there are videos on youtube that concentrate and specialize on Highgate cemetery tours. This place is famous for its celebrity graves. Highgate cemetery burials of celebrities include: Karl Marx, Michael Faraday, Douglas Adams, George Eliot, Jacob Bronowski, Sir Ralph Richardson and Christina Rossetti.)
- Views over London from up on Highgate Hill (like in the famous "London song" by The Kinks.) The views shown are looking eastwards towards Crouch End and also looking Southwards from near Holly Lodge Estate, down towards central London, like in the song by Ray Davies where the lyrics are: "If you're ever up on Highgate Hill on a clear day, You can see right down to Leicester Square". So if you ever heard that song and wondered "where is Highgate hill?" this video shows you a bit of it and the surrounding area. In this video I'm not sure if you can quite make out Leicester Sq, but you can see the London Eye, the BT tower and a few other bits from the London skyline.

For any Monty Python fans, The Angel pub at 01:51 was the local pub of Graham Chapman who lived in Highgate - the blue plaque is for him.

I lived in a flat in Highgate on Milton Avenue -- garden flat No. 16 -- for two and a half years. I love London. And Highgate is the best place in London to live! (An American from Morgan Hill, California.)
I live there mate - know it like the back of my hand and love it as much as my family
What are hidden gems to visit?
Waterlow Park was once the garden to Lauderdale House, back in the days when Highgate was a rural village. It was set aside as park land in the 1800's and became a 'garden for the gardenless'. It is 29 acres I believe and it is right next to St Joseph's Catholic Church. Holloway Road, just south of Highgate, has always had a large Irish community and for generations the Irish would come up from Holloway in large numbers on a Sunday to go to the Church, then spend some recreational time in the park afterwards.

i was up the gate in October. love the place. shame the shop opposite the gate house has closed. Great little store that . begets made to order . also I noticed a development of the old watchmaker s by pond lane. Great place 27 years of visits love it

Rather than subtitles that don't give you a chance to read because they come and go to quickly you should try talking and dropping out the subtitles!!
Hampstead is the older slightly senile member of the family, Highgate is the more trendy outgoing auntie, and East Finchley struggles on it's last million.

a.) I didnt know - somehow it didn't come up when I researched the area!
b.) if I had known, I'm not sure I would have put a living celebrity's house address in a video, just for the sake of being respectful to a celebrity's privacy.
