  • Paul Roma discusses the rumor about Jim Powers turning down Pat Patterson's backstage proposition in WWF. Stream New Shoot Interviews 📺 TitleMatchNetwo...
    Former WWF/WCW star Paul Roma talks openly about what allegedly caused the Young Stallions tag team to lose their push. Roma says that Patterson originally put he and Jim Powers together as a tag team.
    As Paul tells it, Jim was allegedly asked to do some kind of sexual favor by World Wrestling Federation agent/booker Pat Patterson. Roma says that Powers went to the office to complain and their push as The Young Stallions would be no more.
    Roma details what the atmosphere was like back then and how Pat Patterson was an open secret. Paul also confirms that some wrestlers performed "favors" in exchange for a better spot on the card.

    Paul Roma was really gracious to my friend and me at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1985 or 86. We were about 12 years old and we'd slipped past the usher to the corridor outside the locker rooms during intermission. Mr. Roma chatted with us at the door, was patient with our dopey questions, and offered us an autograph. Neither of us had a pen, but we were just grateful for his time. Kids remember things like that (QED), so thank you, Mr. Roma.

      These wrestlers are some of nicest guys you ever could meet. I've been a fan since 5 years old in the mid 60's and met Arnold Skoaland and Blackjack Mulligan at a show in Rawway NJ- Mulligan was enormous. Later Piper, Valentine and Tito Santana in the 80's at Woodbridge Center mall. Got there autographs and they couldn't be nicer. I also met Pedro Morales in the 70's on the street in Iselin NJ. He was soft spoken and a gentleman. He was looking for a Realtor looking to buy a home. These things happen. When it does, it's amazing and these memories will last forever.

    I loved both the Young Stallions & Power & Glory. Everytime I see a team do that move I would call it just that - The power!! AND THE GLORY!! When FTR started doing it & Nigel called it like that I popped so hard because I'd been doing that for 30 years & it was cool to hear what (at least myself & probably a few other people) were doing for so long actually make it OFFICIAL on TV. Now it's basically canon. You see that move & you know it's the Power & the Glory. They deserve it & old school wrestling deserves to have more moves treated with respect that way. Especially the DDT & the Superkick & the Piledriver. Those are the big 3 that are being absolutely butchered to death. Moonsaults & Frog Splashes are also spammed too much from the flyboys.

    A lot of those WWF guys back in the day I'm sure did favors for Patterson and others to get the pushes that they did. That's just the way it was and still is in other less high profile workplaces across the country. Some bosses are just like that and abuse their position of authority. As I posted earlier in another thread though, Jim Powers was a guy back in the day who was small by WWF standards so I don't think he was ever going to get more of a bit of a tag team push, regardless. It was obvious that Powers lifted weights but he was only about 5'10" in terms of his height so he wouldn't have looked believable going over guys like Hogan and especially Andre The Giant.

    Roma gets so much hate but always seems genuine and honest in his version of things. Powe and Glory were awesome too the fact fans cheered them destroying the rockers said it all.

    More I listen to Roma more I respect him. He gets so much hate justified or not but he seems genuinely a good guy. Way he speaks of Big Herc always in great way too shows he cares for his pal. Power and Glory were so under valued. They destroyed fan faves the rockers and fans cheered!!!! Missed Opportunity should have had a run with the gold even if brief

    I'm glad Jim complained about it. In the entertainment business unfortunately, if you don't don't do "certain things " for certain people you don't go as far. Fortunately not everyone has had to do this but a lot do. Just too much to talk about in one comment.

    • @cropsykreuger
      @cropsykreuger Před 6 měsíci +4

      He's not speaking as if he's a top guy, nor does he care about the term jobber. Everyone in wrestling does the job at some point. Roma had his head screwed on and wasn't a junkie or an alchy like a lot of the talent from that time. Remember, the difference between a "jobber" and a "star" is a push.
