Conrail is definitely one of them childhood past times for me. At two or three years old, living in a small apartment right along the Harrisburg line in Palmyra, I sat at a window and watched them hammer on by!

The Conrail unit is actually Norfolk Southern's Conrail Heritage unit. In 2012 for their 30th Anniversary, NS painted 20 Locomotives in special paint schemes of all the railroads that formed Norfolk Southern. To answer your question at 8:09, those are called spine cars. They're designed to transport Trailers from 28' up to 53' long and containers from 40' up to 53' long. There is a Hot Box Detector just west of the crossing at 9:06 where you were at filming that stack train. Again, just thought I would share some info with you. Be safe.

@@luv2fly452 NS and CSX both own shared assets of Conrail. There isn't any power from the railroad that still retains the paint (from what I've seen) but NS and CSX do operations in Pennsylvania and Jersey for Conrail. The government actually created Conrail to revitalize rail service in the Midwest and northeast. The Staggers Act made Conrail very successful, until NS and CSX had an agreement to buy Conrail on a joint stock purchase.

The cars in question are called piggy backs or proper term "spine cars". At my employer BNSF we also refer to them as "bare tables". We do a LOT of hand-offs with Norfolk Southern here in Chicago. Also, if you're interested , check out horseshoe curve in Altoona.

that is not an "old Conrail unit", that loco is just as new as all the others. it is a heritage unit, so it was never on Conrail, it was painted for Norfolk Sothern's 30th anniversary in 2012. A heritage unit is a new loco painted in a predecessor paint scheme. So that loco is not old

I'm going to break your heart, Steve, Orwell has that Conrail unit thirty five her junior like many have said here. Pretty much all the original big blue is long gone to paint or the torch if it didn't get picked up by a shortline or Mexico. There's only one shortline I know of who has a pure Conrail fleet still in big blue and it's down in Mississippi around the northern part of the state. You can look it up and see for yourself if you ever get a load out that way. You weren't along the Southern Tier branch, you were along the Lurgen Branch between Harrisburg and Hagerstown, MD. This line sees about two dozen trains a day not counting the as needed traffic. It can be hit or miss with trains coming in fleets from what I've seen on the VR cam at Greencastle. Still, nice catch of the Heritage Conrail!

NS 8098 is one of Norfolk Southern's heritage units. In 2012, they repainted 20 of their modern locomotives into paint schemes from several railroads that no longer exist, but in many ways have ties to the modern NS system.
Heres a list of the NS Heritage Units,
*indicates the ones I have seen
    NS 8025 Monongahela Railway
    NS 8098 Conrail *
NS 8099 Southern Railway (Currently in repair shops after being involved in a derailment) *

    NS 8102 Pennsylvania RR *
NS 8103 Norfolk and Western Railway *
    NS 8104 Lehigh Valley RR
    NS 8105 Interstate RR
NS 8114 Original Norfolk Southern * (used to be a Charlotte NC to Norfolk VA route, today's Norfolk Southern is named by the merger of the Norfolk and Western, and the Southern Railway)
NS 1065 Savannah and Atlanta Railway *

They actually weren’t repainted into the heritage paint. They either came that way from the factory or were painted on property at the shop in PA. The last 5 or 6 EMD’s were painted in Muncie Indiana and taken in a social move from there to the big heritage rodeo in NC.

The latest KCS locomotive to show up on the East Coast with CN was KCS 5023, on Mar 22, it did a run from Moncton, NB to Saint John, NB and back, on Mar 23 it left Moncton on CN 305 from Moncton back up to Toronto.
