    Clean place not filthy and rundown looking like cities here in America. Greetings from Port Saint Lucie Florida!

      I agree. Thinking about this comment, I am conflicted. Most cities have neighborhoods which you may want to avoid, in Europe and in the US. But it's refreshing to see such nice, kept up, crime free areas of Zurich. I wonder what their secret is and how we can replicate it.

      @@Luke_Starkenburg Looking at old film footage of American cities I could see cities that looked clean and the people look neatly dressed. Now those same locations look more and more third world. What changed? Could it be the people? Perhaps a large population of people that do not appreciate a neat,orderly society that functions well? Maybe they just don't identify with such a world.

      @@johnalder6028 at first I want to blame this on immigration and illegals, etc. I’ve been to many cities in Europe with a problem with immigrants and gypsies living and begging on the street. But when I look at US cities, the homelessness and drugs are associated with mostly people born in the US. I guess I blame it on the US not spending enough government money for citizens with mental illness. I live in Chicago, and the amount of people begging on street corners, living in tents, and riding the subway all night to stay warm is unacceptable. There are numerous programs to help but people would rather stay on the streets, it seems.

      @@Luke_Starkenburg The illegals In my opinion are interested in the freebies and have no desire to adapt to western ways, as their numbers grow in the cities the cities will continue to die as others flee. I love Chicago , been there numerous times by train. Union Station is great, Gibsons steakhouse, Field Museum , The Drake Hotel and so on. Coddling the criminal element isn't helping the city and incompetence will increase greatly. Sigh.

      I love seeing these complicated switches, and I'm impressed on how smooth the road looks even with all the track-work.

    Nice video. At 0:50 trolleybusses and trams use the same route. There are separate overhead wires for busses and trams. How does that work at intersections?

      @justintaylor8605 Před 5 měsíci

      I don't know the exact english name for it, but the wires are kinda separated. You can see the solution at around 7:53 if you look good through her sunblocker :D

      I misspelled Hauptbahnhof... Twice. I need to really pay attention to my text and triple check it. I spelled it Haupbahnhof.

    Why no wheel slip noise on curves?

    • @Luke_Starkenburg
      @Luke_Starkenburg  Před rokem +1

      I don't know why some trains squeal horribly in curves and some systems are very quiet. When I lived in Boston, I felt like I needed earplugs to avoid permanent hearing damage because the light rail trains squealed so loudly in curves. But when I traveled to San Diego, those streetcars negotiated equally as tight curves and were silent. I don't understand why.

      @@Luke_Starkenburg The only thing which makes sense are differential axles so that the wheels don't slip.

    • @Luke_Starkenburg
      @Luke_Starkenburg  Před rokem +1

      @@lohphat Maybe the tracks are greased slightly. In the downtown section it's flat so they don't need the traction as much. But along lines 9 and 10, they do go up some steeper grades.

      @@lohphat Honestly, I've ridden lots of trams and light rail systems around the world and I don't recall hearing wheel slip much. Can you send me video links where you can plainly hear wheel slip? Either here or to lukestar82@gmail.com

      @@Luke_Starkenburg SF Muni is the worst with the Breda stock -- I don't remember too much wheel slip with the old Boeing cars retired 20 years ago. And I don't have enough experience with the new Siemens stock to know since I left SF 7 years ago for NYC.
      SF BART's wheel noise is legendary even on straight segments. It's deafening when in the Transbay Tunnel.
      In NY, I do notice less slip with newer subway or overground stock, but there are some very tight curves in the system.
