This is fantastic, I had never considered treating foam core as a serious material. Thanks for the video!
The college where I went to in the late 80s to study industrial design took great pride in educating their students in proper model building. I visited again a two years ago to check out which direction they had taken. While they still have a shop, it has turned mostly all digital and it did not look as if model building was still relevant for the purpose of presenting design prototypes.
Sad and unfortunate, it's the same where I teach, kids play video games and don't know how to build much with their hands. What school did you attend?
@EricStrebel - I graduated from the Polytechnic University of Munich in Germany. Now called Hochschule Muenchen. I became a design and technology teacher after a few years of freelance product design. I am currently trying to start an after school club building RC model airplanes. Foam core is heavily involved (as it is easier, faster, cheaper, and more crash resistant than balsa construction) and it may be that the kids who participate have the patience to build carefully and well. Where do you teach?
I have taught mainly at Wayne State University here in Detroit for the last 15 years, but have taught at CCS and Lawrence Tech as well.
Sir u definately deserve more recognition!! Love ur videos
Thanks
This is fantastic, I never considered using foam board as a showing case material. I always use it as internal structure for support of my art pieces. This is amazing!! Thanks for the explanation video!
Dear Eric it's above all Perfect standards
Learned some new skills thank you!
Cool
Excellent info presented in clear and entertaining manner.
That's all so cool. I have made really weird looking boxes with foam core. I'm going to get some new supplies and do them all over again. I had no idea how to make them this way. Thanks!!
The other things that are GREAT for curves are a set of welders fillet gauges. They have excellent curves you can use for precise fillets and radii.
Awesome tips. Precision work is excellent and beautiful.
Hi Eric, I am also a product designer and maker and just recently found your videos. Really impressed and entertaining, keep up the great work!
Thanks!
Love your channel!!!!!
Thanks
Omg this helped me so much! Could you do a video to show how to make a barrel?
Thank you - you have a great trading style - and I always learn something. 👍😎👍. Merry Christmas 🎄
Happy holidays
Very interesting video. If I did that type of work I'd surely follow your instructions. Thank you.
Awesome video and techniques. That grid technique is brilliant. Mahalo for sharing! : )
Great Tips, Eric. Rock on.
Thanks!
Thank you!
You're most welcome
ive always peeled off the inside layer of paper on one rounded parts, like the cylinder. rubbing that side down on the edge of the table helps it curl that way. it doesnt get he faceting
Have to investigate that, sometimes the paper is not easy to peel
do a vid on a spent mold! in balsa or sign foam
Could you use a laser cutter to cut foam core?
Yes, I have a few videos where I do that.
Wym when u say “offset the grid”? Around 14:34
What kind of square are you using? looks like it would increase consistency pretty well.

Ohhh yes you DO need shape blades for foam core. Which means you need a BOX of them for a project. The foam dulls the blades very quickly.
Yup
I'm sad because I thought this was a video about polyurethane composite foam core materials.
These techniques work with Dibond as well, just not with an exacto, lol
Please let me know if you could make me a custom mold! I would love to order from you.
Follow the links on the about page to my website and send your project overview document along for review
@@EricStrebel We are working on the document. Once we get it together we will send it! Thankyou!
Ok, sounds good
In the rest of the world it comes in metric*
🙂
why not use superglue with accelerator, instead of elmers glue or hot glue.
@@massriver good to know thx
I would not use a urethane or epoxy, it's to hard and not a material of similar hardness as the foam core. It will make molodifying the part quite difficult should you want to alter your foam core. It's just not an appropriate adhesive to use with phone core.
Patience....
@@EricStrebel time is money. the best techniques get the fastest results with the best quality. slow/patience is for the old/handicapped. heeh
@@EricStrebel what about fast drying rubber cement?
