  • One of the craziest EuroLeague fights created a similar buzz that the NBA’s Malice At The Palace did back in 2004. A fight that ended with suspensions of Guerschon Yabusele, Kevin Punter, Gabriel Deck, Mathias Lessort & left Dante Exum injured. Huge drama before and after the brawl made the 2023 Playoff series between Real Madrid & Partizan one of the most exciting ever. All of it is broken down in this video!

    Although difficult to exempt responsibility from a team who lost a 10+ pt lead in 2 occasions, it's inevitable to not elect Sergio Llull the MVP of the series. With Euroleague's help, he saved Real Madrid in game 2. It's insulting that Real Madrid got benefited after starting a riot, including the ridiculous penalty for what Yabusele did.

      I have question: Lets suppose that Llull set up a trap at the end of game two. Why Punter had to fall in? Was it so difficult to hold his nerves for another 60 secs or do you think that he is the first ever player to recieve an unfair/unjustice unsportsmanship foul? Few seconds before, Punter had been fouled hard by Pouirier. If he had reacted then, nothing would have happened. But going against RM's captain with your raised fist.... He should have kept his temper.
      * Penalties were light IMO, for all the players involved in that fight. As for the chubby guy, he shouldnt be allowed to enter any basketball court at all, for the duration of his ban. He can go watch some wrestling instead!

    Everything went downhill after that incident in game 2. It's a shame we couldn't finish what we started, we looked so good in those first two games. Of course, you have to commend Real players for not giving up, and especially for staying locked in in the second half of game 5.
    Still, you can't help but wonder what would've happened if there were no suspensions, and I definitely think justice didn't prevail in the end in this series.
    However, as Partizan fans, we have to be proud of what our guys accomplished this season, after not playing in the Euroleague for 8 years, and we're hoping for a better run and a bit more luck next season.

I agree with your nice comment and since you cant change what has already happened, you can just learn from your mistakes and to be honest, im not a Partizan fun, but i do have a bitter taste for watching your team throwing at the garbage two extraordinary and memorable games at Spain and possibly the F4 qualification...

      @@redhippog7 There was a massacre in the Belgrade elementary school between G3 and G4 and it was perfectly clear to me then that G5 would be played. In addition to all that, Aleksa Avramović, who is an extremely important player in Partizan, was injured in G3. Exum also wasn't fully recovered, and when you add in Kevin Punter's embarrassing suspension, it's clear the odds weren't great. What is important is that the Euroleague sent a message that big clubs can provoke an incident if they are in a bad situation in the playoffs.

    As a neutral fan here, my point of view is that Punter and whole Partizan organisation should have been aware of these Spanish mind games. What I want to say is that, you have +15 in last minut of the match in Madrid, potentially 2:0 for you and as PROFESSIONAL player and CAPTAIN you need to be calm and ready for these unsportsmanlike strategies from the Spaniards. I don’t want to blame just Punter here of course, but for me I think that he had to act in more mature and calmer way than this, especially because I also think that if Partizan was on full roster they could easily smash Real with 3:0.

  • @reignmans
    @reignmans Před 11 měsíci +70

    its really easy to dissect.
    Llull did what they've done in the past vs Olympiakos and spanoulis. a hard foul to create something out of nothing. Punter took the bait, exum came running from behind initially wanting to punch Llull behind the head, last moment just palmed him behind the head, then deck follows up by grabbing exum, exum ducks and gives what seems like a gut punch, yabusele notices, grabs exum and body slams him to oblivion, meanwhile mousa is getting punched by almost everyone (including an accidental hit by hezonja), punter gives a 1-2 combo to mousa (neck then face), lesort is running like a running back from the other side of the court to do an RKO to Mousa.

      Look at it from a good angle. He punched him in the chest. Look at 2 fouls before that on Punter. Porier pushed him a few meters and he was already provoked. You obviously didn't see that. And the Swede who made the decision wanted Punter to punish 2 games to move the series to Madrid. 4 games should not have been played because 8 children were killed in the school. EL had to postpone the game because the children are more important than the game. I, who am an ardent fan of Partizan, watched very little of the game because of the shooting kids.

    @vasilisantonopoulos9326 Před 11 měsíci +9

    Great video!!! Just to put a couple of things into perspective, a) Sergio Llull"s involvement is just the harsh foul on Punter and the mainly verbal fight with him afterwards. If none of the rest happened his punishment would have been an unsportsmanlike foul and maybe a technical at most, so I do not understand why there was so much talk about him not being suspended. Having said that though his play is straight out of Kevin McGee"s playbook in the semifinal in Munich in 1989 where he provoked Giannakis and managed to turn the lost semifinal for Maccabi. Llull took it even further and managed to turn a whole series and in my eyes he is the main reason Real is through, or reversely Punter is the main reason Partizan is out as if he had kept his calm there is no way Partizan would have not swept them in Belgrade. The only reason for him being suspended is his record or rather the record of the Spanish players of his generation, that were great players but at the same time sore losers, provocateurs, arrogant and always in cohorts with the system. b) Way more than Llull I do not understand why Musa , Hezonja and Exum were not suspended. Musa is involved in just about every punch thrown, and is no excuse that he is the recipient while he misses his, Hezonja is one of the first to get involved and it can not be an excuse that his main punch ended on no other than Musa, and Exum is the real instigator of the fight as until his involvement the whole thing would have ended with fouls and technicals and it can not be an excuse his near death experience from Jabusele. c) There is no comparison with the malice at the Palace for many reasons. The main is that in Detroit the main issue were the fights between players and the fans, that was why the Indiana players received such harsh punishments and the Pistons players just a fraction of those. The second was that it was an early regular season game and the punishments did not compromise the validity of the competition. In this case it was a decisive playoff game and Euroleague needed to think about the whole competition, as harsher and more punishments would have just resulted to rigging the competition in favor of their favorite team Barcelona giving them a wild card to the final. Of course they ended up favoring their other favorite team Madrid, but you can not have everything in life and if there is one thing for certain in European Basketball is that some Spanish team is going to benefit from matters not related to the game...

    Partizan had multiple chances to finish off madrid, in game 5 they were up by 15+ with a full team (except for avramovic), while madrid was missing suspended yabusele and injured deck, poirier and cornelie
    P.s. I agree that yabusele should have been given a stricter punishment.
    P.s. the argument about madrid's budget doesn't really make sense, you cannot sign players in the middle of a playoff series, you play with what you've got

      @@abcdefg4160 What 4 starters you're talking about? Cornelie!? He played against Partizan and was terrible. Poirier also played. Real had 15 great players, and some of them who played very little would be leaders in most other teams in the EL. On the other hand, Partizan's rotation in the EL consisted of 10 players, four of whom played Euroleague for the first time in their career, and three are inexperienced kids (Smailagić, Madar, Trifunović). If Real Madrid's Džanan Musa gets injured, Causer is there, who's not as good as him, but can contribute. If Tavares isn't ready, there's Poirier, who's an elite Euroleague center. If you suspend Kevin Punter, Partizan does NOT have a player who can compensate for his absence. Same with Lessort, LeDay and Exum. The players who made the difference in Game 5 were Chacho Rodriguez, Rudy and Llull, who have a ton of such games in their careers, and those players were nailed to the bench for most of the season. Now I get to the point: Madar can't guard Chacho, Exum had 4 personal fouls at the start of the 4/4. Not just that, Exum wasn't fully recovered. Avramović is an energy guy and a player who changes the rhythm of the game and plays excellent defense. There's no way that Chacho would penetrate into the paint so easily, and on the other hand, he would be targeted in defense, just like in the first two games. But it certainly wouldn't have gotten to Game 5 if the Euroleague hadn't imposed such shameful penalties.

    It feels comforting to see that others see it too. I love Partizan, so my opinion is clouded by emotions. We feel tricked and robbed. It feels like, when Real fans yelled "Euroleague mafia" in the game 2, it was not a critique, but a reminder and a call for help. Not starting some stupid conspiracy theory, just saying how it feels in the hindsight.
    You can say that length of benches decided in the end, which is a basketball category, but Partizan had no problems with that until now, Partizan was the best team in Euroleague in the 2nd half of the season, and that became an issue only after what happened in Madrid in the game 2, and the league's reaction to that.
    Euroleague not only allowed, but played a role and assisted in situation where a violent non-basketball event, in my opinion decided the outcome of the basketball series. It was obvious as soon as they announced their decisions. People noticed right away something was wrong about it.
    This is such a stain on the league. PAO owner has a point: Now if basketball doesn't go well, is it a viable option to start a fight and try hurt opponent or lure them in extreme reactions? The answer is probably- No. Somehow I doubt Euroleague measures would work out in favour of Partizan or, for example Žalgiris.
    Not making any accusations, just saying, something seriously stinks in all this. I'm not really sure what it is, but Partizan obviously got the shitty part of the stick.

    I see a lot of people writing about Exum and Partizan faking the injury. Without trying to get into that, I do think that Exum didn't get a suspension because EL was certain he wouldn't play and was injured. Whether intentionally or not, the injury tricked the officials because there's no way he wouldn't get a suspension if Deck and Lessort got one, at least one game, in my opinion. So maybe look at it as Exum wasn't suspended on Partizan side and Llull on Real's side.

    Just so were clear. Just because real ended up winning doesn't mean the bans favored them. Should Yabusele get 25+ games? Yes obviously. But you cant punish a slam with 25 games and a punch with 1 or 2. All the punishments were minimized for the players to make the f4 (except Yavusele ofc). And the team that was favored by that was the team that was up 2-0. Punching a player is a 4+game suspension and punter lessort deck would(and should) have not played in the f4. He committed an unsportsmanlike foul (which happen all the time and wasn't threatening to his opponent's well-being) and got called for that, end of story. It's actually punter who overreacted for no reason. That guy thought he is too awesome after scoring a buzzer beater and couldn't be touched lol. If that happened in every occasion a player committed an unsportsmanlike foul we would watch 70% fighting and 30% basketball.
