  • Since 1972, in the first week of July, thousands of nature lovers from all walks of life go on a pilgrimage to remote National Forests across North-America to meet and to experience living temporarily in a cooperative community in the woods in harmony with the earth. They focus is on the 4th of July - America's Independence Day - as the holy day of prayer for Peace and Freedom There are no fees, no leader and no money is exchanged. Everyone is welcome. No generators or individual campfire are allowed. Food is provided and cooked in the community kitchen set in different camp areas. Each person is asked to bring their own camping equipment, their own cup, bowl, and spoon, and whatever they might want to share to help the gathering happen (tarps, shovels, musical instruments, bulk food, etc.). No one is turned away because of lacks in these areas. The Magic Hat is passed at mealtimes and around camp. Donations are used to buy food in bulk for the kitchens and whatever else may be necessary for the communal well-being (plywood covers and lime for the latrines, first aid supplies, etc...).
The Gathering is unique. Since 1984 International Rainbow Gatherings have started to be held throughout the year in different parts of the world. Unlike others gatherings events such as "Burning Man" in the Nevada Desert or the "Boom Festival" in Portugal, there is no formal organizational structure. There are no membership qualifications, no fees are dues, no leaders, and virtually no rules other than the one of "peaceful respect."
Each year, individuals take personal responsibility and work together with others on whatever they are inspired to do, from office work, to scouting, to building the kitchens or the latrines at the gatherings, to hauling in food and first-aid supplies, to conflict resolution and peacekeeping. Every project undertaken operates on a consensus basis. Participation, communication, and cooperation are how things get done. Besides the work that goes on to help the gathering happens, there's also lots of acoustical music, performances, drumming, dancing, workshops, herb-walks, council circles, sister circles, brother circles, brother-sister circles, people hanging out, people bartering, people doing bodywork and other healing work, people enjoying nature, people meditating, chanting, and praying, people talking politics, people talking spiritual and personal growth, people visioning the future .
...In "Warriors of the Rainbow" I came across, Ram Dass ( the man who wrote the famous book "Be Here Now"), the Poet Laureate Art Goodtimes, (Green Paleohippie Rainbow poet, basketweaver & potato farmer) the poet Diamond Dave and others Rainbow Warriors who opened their hearts and expressed their understanding of the Rainbow philosophy and experience.
My gratitude to them, to all the musicians playing at the Gathering not mentioned in the credits who shared their talents and to all other brothers and sisters interviewed for opening their hearts to my camera and expressing their truth.
