Nice job staying calm... I've done a fair bit of kayaking but I'm by no means an expert. Kind of got blindsided by a siphon under a log that wasn't visible until we were around a corner and couldn't avoid it this past weekend. Thankfully stayed calm, and it was shallower water so I was able to stick around and help a smaller person right after us that nearly got stuck under their heavy (for them) kayak to get out safely. Still, scary and adrenaline inducing, and a good reminder to stay strong and up on your skills. It's the very reason I'm watching videos and reading articles now. Rest of the four hours or so was relatively mellow and without incident. Glad you came out safe!

We had a a similar swim at that exact rock about a month ago, someone went into the space between the two parts jutting out upside down and then the next thing she was out of her boat on the other side of the rock downriver. We spoke to some of the kayak school instructors who know the river and they said that it isn't actually a siphon, it's an undercut and you get flushed out round the side of it. We still avoided it by going far left from then on though.
Any obstacles like that you must lean in to them with your upper body not away as you did. The boat might still fold but you have a better chance of keeping your head above water or as in most cases you can pull up and push with your hands so not getting trapped
I can top that, I got sucked into an underwater tunnel on the Molalla River in Oregon, had to flip around in the dark with my paddle stuck between my knees. saw a blue light and swam for it. under water for around 2 minutes, blue lips and the widest eyes you've ever seen.
Drowning is scary, gets my heart going. I need to learn to control it. I almost drowned once and now just the site of trouble gets me worked up. Not emotional just heart pumping.
I've never kayaked a river and can't swim at all, either. But am I correct that a siphon is just water flowing under a rock or other obstacle that has hollowed out by the way and forms a little cave of sorts that the water flows through quickly? Essentially an undercut rock?
Such a pretty river, I loved it, luckily without any bad experiences for me. Though one of my mates had a swim that went badly after a bad rope assist, swung her right into worse waters than she was before. She got out good enough with help from our "chief" though. Im not that experienced but your paddle looks super short and you seem to have gotten yourself into that by having nearly no speed at all. Boats without speed don't maneuver. Maybe enjoying scenery to much, or got deceived by rather calm looks? Glad youre ok :)

Glad you are ok! You should try a longer paddle, that thing does nothing! Try also paddling more actively and you will be better prepared for what is coming up. I know in lower flows that it sometimes gives you a false sense of security, but make it clean :). Stay safe.
Everyone giving advice for the syphon as if it's a rock hasn't paddled around them. It's a strainer not a rock, and while you are better leaning on than away you're never going to fight the force of water piling up against your boat. Get out fast.
Thing is kayaking doesn't have to be dangerous, this river is beautiful in many ways but also has a range of difficulties, grade 1 all through to 6, this section is one of the more dangerous ones and and kayakers undertaking the journey should be ready for it (grade 3/4 and well known for siphons and undercuts), so yes, kayaking is dangerous sometimes, but it doesn't always have to be
Like a lot of these guys say just kiss the rock, leaning away will just allow the water to grab your edge and pull you down. But hey it could be worse that it looks on camera so who are we to judge

It's called "the S" section. It's at the towards the end on the way to Trnovo. Looks like the water was higher, more of spring level of water or after rain, rather than mid-summer low water level.
Robertson Decorators, he is not inflating this. The Kayaking community in that area needs to mark the rock, put up signs at the put in, or do something to warn new kayakers to the river of this hidden hazard.
Everyone who wants to paddle any section of whitewater should get local knowledge, our read up on the section you want to run. And get the basic right and this would not have happened. But still running point is still a bigger risk. but this incident could have been avoided. So why put up signs and sh*t, this will only attract even more unskilled paddlers and then real accidents will happen. I am not saying that I am the perfect kayaker. I have made plenty of stupid mistakes, as long as you and your companions learn from it, all is good all is well. Stay safe, stay afloat!

Calm down it wasn't strong flow. Bit of an over-reaction by the swimmer. You didn't lean into the rock and lift your side. That would have instantly stopped you from capsizing. You also had multiple opportunity's to swim into easy eddys after the incident but decided to float down the river and wait on your buddy to gather you up instead. People inflate situations to feed their ego and "the pub story" after the run. This is actually detrimental to the sport of white water kayaking and puts new recruits off. Time for you to open a book of basics and learn why this SMALL incident happened. Otherwise one day you really will be in trouble.
Buddy, you don't know a mistery of this rock. :) I'm not sure if an author of this video knew, but he was pretty careful. I think he heard some camp-fire stories about S before. ;)
I think you are putting it down a bit too much. The paddler was too passive, his buddies were a bit too far away. He wasn't expecting the siphon. Glad he came out alive. Thanks for posting the video. Scary as fuck.
The swim after the incident isn´t the point, the siphon is. I think he got sucked through the vortex? That´s some scary shit. And the video is an excellent example - especially for beginners - of what can go wrong and how quickly. ... In hindsight the following notions are easy to make: First, paddling an apparently unfamilliar section without somebody guiding him. His skills aren´t good enough for a probe. Second being too far from the mates (again based on the skills and familliarity). And the third one is the way too passive paddling and not leaning towards the rock after funking the line. BUT The rest of the river looks quite suitable for him(/her?) and from the video the accident spot isn´t that obvious. He shouldn´t have been that alone AND he should´ve been more vigilant, but that´s easy to say afterwards. .. Lucky guy for being able to tell the story. Brush up on the basics and get back in the saddle.

Also as a swimmer he didnt overreact at all. Very little active paddling in this video, by either the paddler or the rescuers. We were all beginners once, he was lucky.
Did it on an SUP. Hard to recognise from low in the water (kayak) but a well known feature. Always get local knowledge.

Been there done this 20 times. it's usually pretty sedate, after 100+ saves I can tell you some people do not belong on the river, ANY river.

A siphon doesn't give you the nice cushion wave of a rock to manoeuvre on.
