- Fine art architecture photography and brutalism - sounds very disparate, but isn't.
I love exposed concrete!
The honest rawness of the structures, the clear shapes, textures and patinas are motifs right after my taste for architecture photography.
Seemingly endless possible compositions. Small changes in position often result in completely different images.
Of course, brutalist buildings are not to everyone's taste - especially if you live, work or go to school in them. For architectural photography, however, I find them to be a source of inspiration.
There is a lot to say about brutalist architecture, but that is beyond the scope of this description and video. Here, it's all about fine art architecture photography.

Yes indeed. Printing is the often neglected final step of the whole workflow which gives real presence and respect to an image.

I feel that many of the photos gave me the feeling of looking at an M C Escher creation. Especially those in which the sense of scale is lost due to the absence of borders or identifiable objects.

That's one aspect of photography I love: Two (or more) photographers taking photographs of the same subject and the outcome are completely different sets of images.
As a brutalism/concrete lover, you might like the parking garage in Zurich Sihlcity too. Built way after the brutalism era, but still with a similar touch.

Yes, I did see the potential too and spent around 10 Minutes trying to align the lines for a good composition, but gave up after quite a few test shots. Cheers :)

The first picture is without a doubt a Printer! Even wall material in my opinion.

If "wall material" refers to the many concrete walls in the image, then I couldn't agree more :)
But on a serious note, here's why this isn't a print for me:
The composition is not balanced enough. The wall in the foreground takes almost half of the image and is too dominant. Although an important part, the main interest lies in the upper half of the image and in portrait format I usually try to put the main interest in the lower third (where most people look at first, as opposed to landscape format).
To make this a printworthy image (which I think the potential is there), I should take a ladder to be high enough so that the stairs become really visible, shoot it landscape orientation with the foreground wall taking up a balanced amout of space and the main interest (stairs, walls and the actual building towering over it all) in the upper third.
But as always, everything is in the eye of the beholder.

Yeah, "slain by concrete" would also have been a possible video title :)
Sign of life was a close call. The monotonous light and my laziness to cut the print into the square format made it bite the (print) dust.

Oh jetzt wo du es sagst, hab ich ein bisschen ein schlechtes Gewissen wegen der Bank. Ist ja nicht gerade die feine Art mit den Schuhen darauf rumzulaufen. Ein Schmunzler kombiniert mit Anstand wäre es bestimmt gewesen.
Es ist immer wieder faszinierend, was auch schon kleine Positionsänderungen für Auswirkungen auf die Bildkomposition- und Wirkung haben können, vor allem in der Architekturfotografie. Hier war es teilweise richtig schwierig, all die Betonelemente so anzuordnen dass es für mich passt. Die Bank war übrigens nicht nur einfach ein Gag, sondern ich brauchte sie tatsächlich, um den oberen Teil des Durchblicks (unpassende Gebäude im Hintergrund) abzuschneiden.

Wie sind die Drucke an der Wand befestigt? So wie Du sie “anstreichst“ sieht das aus wie ankleben. Vllt. mit ablösbarem Sprühkleber wie ihn Grafiker benutzen (bzw. in analogen Zeiten für Layouts benutzten)?

Procedural question - why use a tripod for a shot in broad daylight?
It's hard to tell exactly what the lighting conditions are, but you could get away with a shorter shutter speed at a desirable aperture, right?
I take the liberty of copying my answer to the same question below:
Various reasons.
Don't have to worry about shutter speed/camera shake at minimum ISO, especially when shooting with longer lenses.
For architecture it's easier to get those vertical lines straight in camera.
For complex architectural situations like the "concrete maze" images in this video, where positioning is a question of centimeters, it helps a lot to arrange the elements exactly as I want (in "concrete maze I" the left edge of the dark block in the center was tricky to position, especially in relation to other elements like the corner of the dark lintel in the upper right part. The tripod was a blessing here).
And then habit. I reckon for 50% of the images, the tripod isn't really neccessary. Better don't ask me how many times I carried the tripod all day long through the snow without using it once :)
looks like a fun shoot. dreadful place to live. same camera as mine. why not native lens? 16-35mm f4 would rock. some look out of focus but could be YT issues. i use level on LCD and adjust in post. i think i would shoot on a sunny day and go shadow hunting and crank up texture/clarity in LR. nice job.
It's a schoolhouse and doesn't look as dreadful inside (unfortunately it was closed when I was there, but from what I've seen I could spent another couple hours photographing the interior). As for the lens: I've got a bunch of excellent vintage glass I've been using for decades now. Last on the 5DII, which I finally replaced by that used Sony A7 (body only). Just buying adapters for the lenses I already have and know inside out can't compare in price with Sony lenses :)

Just seen this. I think you were quite hard on yourself, or maybe that’s why I’m no expert. There were a few shots in there that I would have been glad to have taken and put into a mini type photo book. But, thank you, I’ve just realised a genre I really want to go into…abstract achetecture.
I’ve been lost taking photos of anything and am trying to go more into a style. This might just have helped.
Yes, give it a try and focus on a specific theme for a while. I find that limitations are not a hindrance but a boost for my creativity. The blank page waiting to be filled, with no clues as to what it should be, is usually overwhelming. Absolute freedom can be like being trapped in the middle of an ocean. An ocean full of options, in which all directions are open, but you either tread paralyzed in place or swim haphazardly in circles.
Limiting yourself does require some discipline though. So to start I suggest picking one building and really spend time with it. Examine it thoroughly with your eyes and your camera from all angles and distances and I'm sure you will discover more and more.
The best thing about architecture is that it doesn't run away and you have alle the time to harass it with your camera :)

Definitely think I’m going to start being more disciplined with all forms of art that I do from now on. This was an inspiration for sure. I completely disagreed with a lot of his decisions to toss some of these photos but when I saw the keepers I understood!

Naja, es war Ostersonntag und es hat dort weder Hasen noch gross Gebüsch um die Nester zu verstecken.
Unter der Woche ist das Gebäude aber gut bevölkert. Zwangsbevölkert - es ist eine Schule.
Leider konnte ich nicht hinein, vom reinspähen und von Bildern her sieht es Innen aber weniger brutal aus - eigentlich ganz ok.
Ja, bald 1000! In CZcams Grössenordnungen zwar ein Klacks, wenn ich mir aber eine Versammlung von 1000 Menschen vorstelle, wird mir schon etwas anders.

Yes, I bought a used Sony A7RIII. The 5DII is really getting old (so many hot pixels I could do astro in a closed room), is just too heavy and clunky compared to full frame mirrorless and the Sony lets me continue to use my park of excellent vintage lenses.

@@Lennymcgra Not a striking difference. The absurd resolution is still nice though for it allows for more aggressive cropping in post, if neccessary. Drawback are the huge files, which slow down the whole post process.
When it comes to higher ISO noise, then it's easy to outmatch the 5DII.
41 seconds into your video would have made a great shot. shooting towards the concrete to your left. you got the big steps and diagonal shadow on the wall. you might even get the regular steps with shadows and highlights. Just my two cents
I not only agree but I'm sure there are several good possible shots of this fountain. I did spend quite some time there, surrounding it, climbing it, checking out many different angles but somehow just couldn't grasp it to find compositions. And in the end I came back with this mediocre image of the whole fountain - just to have something.
I plan to revisit the site in summer, when it is (hopefully) filled with water, which might make it even more interesting with reflections (and maybe helps me to loosen the creative knot I had the first time).
personally I know I miss good shots because I'm so focused and miss things because I'm not looking at the whole scene

I am the fan of exposed concrete as well! Concrete is well known for a versatile and durable building material widely used in constructions for its ensured strength and durability. I personally think concrete is a symbol of innovation in architecture with diverse purposes. Indeed it allowed many architects to move beyond the limit and produce experimental works such as Habitat 67 and Spomenik monuments.
From this video, you've started the video with the layouts of fancy cuts of artifacts or architecture formally considered as a product of Brutalism. I can see your effort to convey the basics of Brutalism through visually stimulating photographs to the audience. I like your choice of soundtrack. It just represents Brutalism. I really like your videos. My favorite from this video is ‘Concrete Maze I’.

My favorite is 'Concrete Maze III' - because it feels "heavier", more calm and therefore fits in perfectly with the topic.

However most of the time, I "scout" compositions hand held first and only grab the tripod when I think I found something.
Your subjects are ok and you format too, the problem is the framing and light
