Hi, I found a Melo in a shop today reduce by 80%, and of course I had to buy it, it is in a lamentable state, so I repot it as the soil might be full of chemicals from tap water, the roots looked healthy, out of 4 nodes it has one healthy leaf, the tip is missing and from the node near the tip a new weak leaf is trying to grow... I found your video very helpful and reassuring, thank you for sharing. On the flower topic: I have a tiger tooth philodendron that grows like mad and flowers like a lunatic, I think the Melo will have similar flowers, most aroids have similar flowers... Perhaps this helps satisfy your curiosity but I have nothing concrete to offer :-)
That's cool. How is doing now? Yes aroids in general have fairly bland flowers and like you, I believe they will be the same. But hey, we're in it for the leaves anyway 😊

Wow, subbed! Brilliant channel! I have a Melanochrysum which is about 7 feet tall but all the leaves come through at the same size - approx24 cms and haven’t gone to that GORGEOUS mature stage yours have. This plant sits next to my growing table which has full spectrum lighting over head. I water when the top three inches of soil has dried out and fertilise weakly every week using dyna grow (it’s still warm here in NZ and the plant is actively growing) I only stop providing fertiliser when it’s winter and growth has slowed. Anyways…. Do you have any hunches on why she’s producing the same size leaves all the way up the vine? Your specimen is absolutely beautiful 😍 thanks for a great video 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Oh wow. Thank you so much. Hmmm I was thinking the maturing leaves is light for sure with mine. Are there trees or buildings blocking some of the light that your window gets? The larger one of mine came with a pretty mature leaf and has basically maintained that size thereabouts with the new leaves. The smaller one in the middle of my plank did size up until I broke all the leaves. I really think it was a light thing as they are in a very bright room with a sky light but are in the corner so protected. It's a difficult balance because of the burning potential. I went to a botanical garden and the melanos there have so much light but slightly shielded windows over it. Of course they also have about 90% humidity which I'm not able to provide in my home.
@@PlantsofJoy hmmm I have wondered if it was a light thing. It is a very difficult balance to get in most homes. The only thing I can think to do is add more artificial lighting and then see what happens..the experiment continues lol

I recently got a philodendron melanochrysum with only 3 small leaves. I can't wait for this one to grow a new leaf. I am still looking for a good place where it can stand with enough light but no direct sunlight. pretty hard.
Yeah that's the constant struggle. Indirect light is the holy grail. I've seen people invest in shade cloth if it's too bright, but that's like a level 10 plant parent. For me I just kicked some other plants out if that prime real estate so I could put this there. Once they get going they're really speedy growers so those 3 leaves will be 5 before you know it. Gaining height no problems, a good number of leaves as well, all seems good so far. I am wrong in wishing that the leaves would grow in size a little bit more.... What am I doing wrong...?
I think the humidity level in my flat is around 50% - do you think a Melanochrysum could be okay with that? I've been trough the jungleflat, with humidifiers and pebble trays everywhere - I'm done. I just want plants that can adjust to MY living conditions haha
This is going to be a controversial opinion but yes. I think 50% is fine for a couple of reasons. Undoubtedly it will rain and the humidity will be higher at points and lower at other points. My ambient humidity is 50%ish the majority of the time and mine is happy. The humidity has been lower at times and at that point I do use a humidifyer to bump the humidity back up to 50-60 depending on the heat of the day. The second reason is because I don't want mould on my walls which would definitely happen if I were to live with really high humidity all the time. I think my plant looks great but it will never be as big as the ones in botanical Gardens and that's OK. I do have a humidifyer but I only use it when the humidity is compromised. I am working on an update video with more info which will be out soon. Thanks for watching 🙂
I was wondering if you have any problems with low humidity where the new leaves are struggling to pop out. I have this issue a lot with my pink princess but I just got a melanochrysum a few days ago and I don't know if i need to put it near a humidifier.
Well when my humidity was very low, it wasn't putting out a leaf so this didn't matter and I didn't notice. However the latest couple of leaves seemed to be fine coming out, however they have some tears that can only be attributed to lower humidity as there was no other reason that could have caused them. I would say keep it closer to a humidifier, certainly if the central heating is on.
great video :) does anyone have experience with juvenile melano leaves getting stuck in their petiolar sheath? I know they are kind of notorious for doing this - I was wondering if I could get some suggestions as i'm having this issue with mine. humidity is 70% on average
I have experience! This summer was like the actual desert it was so dry!!! My leaves started getting so stuck but I managed to find a workaround. It's not ideal but I just started spraying the growth point twice a day with water or rubbing a wet cotton bud over it. After a bit of trial and error it worked well but it took some attention. I wish I had a better solution but I'm dealing with a home rather than a greenhouse. I would love better suggestions though.
I’ve got a few teeny weeny baby ones laying around the house. I’ve noticed that watering will release the leaf from the sheath. It’s thirstier than my other velvet philos.
It's position is really close to my micans so they're receiving similar conditions. Although the micans loses its velvet when it's mature I think. I've taken a few cuttings since I made this video and I will say that that they need more humidity when they're starting off. Like as much as you can at the beginning. I hope that helps with your cutting 🙂
It needs 100% humidity or close to it, or a humid moss pole. If the aerial roots aren't getting a constant supply of water, the leaves will get small and smaller and will break, as you're seeing with yours.
But plants move, they grow in one direction and sometimes they fall because of the weight. I live near a rainforest and it’s very topical to find huge orchids or bromelia specimens that fell from the trees

Don’t use a humidifier. They are not really useful and end up breaking your electronics.
