  • Nürburgring Südschleife Surviving parts Abandoned Race Track
    In this Circuits of the past video we show you a lap on the surviving parts of the abandoned section of the famous Nürburgring. This section is known as the Nürburgring Südschleife. Südschleife is German for Southern Loop.
    The abandoned Southern Loop of the Nürburgring can be seen as the forgotten part of this iconic race track in Germany.
    When the Nürburgring opened in 1927, the complex included the famous 14.17 Miles long Northern Loop - in German Nordschleife - a 1.4 Miles Start/Finish Loop and the 4.8 Miles long Südschleife.
    While the prestigious Northern Loop was used for international races, like the German Formula One Grand Prix, the Südschleife was used for national events.
    After 1975 the Südschleife became in disuse. And when the Nürburgring lost the German Grand Prix after the terrible crash from Niki Lauda in 1976, plans were made to modernise the Nürburgring.
    Victim of the modernisation was the old Südschleife. To built the new Grand Prix Circuit they demolished the old Start/Finish Loop and the northern part of the Südschleife.
    When you enter the remaining part of the old Südschleife today you first enter a public road that follows the old layout. For traffic they increased the radius of the corners, so this section is actually faster as it used to be.
    The most southern part of the Südschleife was used for an extension for the village of Müllenbach. As a reminder to the track they named the road Südschleife.
    We’re now approaching the Müllenbach Corner, a slow right-hander on the most southern point of the Südschleife. After this corner follows a long and fast ascending part that leads back to the Start/Finish Loop.
    For the next part you have to make a long detour to the southern parking of the current Nürburgring Grand Prix Circuit.
    There is an abandoned original part of the old Nürburgring Südschleife. This section is abandoned because thety never gave it a new destination. Let's hope this section is preserved and never repurposed.
    However, this part is in a very bad condition with huge holes in the surface. But there is also another original section of the Südschleife which is still in good condition. That's because it is now used as an entrance road to the parking lot during events on the current Nürburgring.
    At the highest point of the remained Südschleife is a very slow corner namen Scharfer Kopf. Here also ends the remained part of the Südschleife. The next corner is public road but still follows the layout of the Südschleife.
    However, not for long. After this corner the Südschleife ends. Here was the connection with the Start/Finish Loop. Today the new Grand Prix Circuit is here.

    I visited the Südschleife last month. I don't know but there really is some kind of "aura" walking the abandoned section. Just thinking of folks going 200km/h+ up the hill (It Is very steep, i'd compare it to the current day "Fuchsröhre" part of the Nordschleife, just going uphill instead of down with a few flat out corners through the trees. The drivers of the past who raced there had some serious balls, lol
    I wish they had kept the Südschleife and modernised it as the "new" GP circuit, OR build the GP circuit somewhere in addition to the old Süd & Norschleife without interfeering with them. It's sad to see the track forgotten and partially gone forever. (Part of it is now just a big industrial waste lot in the Town of Müllenbach, other gone parts are now... grass, trees and bushes).
    In the town of Müllenbach, theres also a short old access road to the Südschleife that now leads to nowhere. there were still some very faint markings when I was there.
    I kind of wonder why they didn't re-use the abandoned section as a public road. Because now there is one running right next to it back up to the current GP circuit. But maybe that road was allready there in 1984.
    BTW:
    Next time you visit, make sure to do a "lap" of the almost completely forgotten "Bergpreis Bad Neuenahr" hillclimb track, just a few miles from the Ring. It's very scenic, AND to this day you can find the starting line clearly visible and very faintly the letters *S T A R T* written above it. :D Preserve the history.

      Thanks for the aditional information. Near the town of Müllenbach was an exit/entry to the Südschleife, just like at Adenau on the Nordschleife. I think the road you talk about is from that entry. Next time I will look for that one. And then I will also look for the Bergpreis Bad Neuenah Hillclimb Track. Thanks for the tip!

    • @Gigidag77
      @Gigidag77 Před 3 lety +6

      @@Circuitsofthepast Yes, I also assumed it was an entrance for public cars like in Adenau. Was it even possible to have "tourist drives" on the Südschleife while there was any event going on at the Nordschleife ? Obviously both couldn't use the start/finish straight at the same time.

      @Circuitsofthepast  Před 3 lety +7

      @@Gigidag77 I don't know if it was used for Tourist Rides during events on the Nordschleife. Trough mod for Assetto Corsa, the old forgotten section was brought back to life in a way, its very good replication of the original full track, as player can drive any combination and get to feel sort of what the drivers of the past did. But those days I already read books about motorsport history and soon I discovered there was also a Südschleife. On my next visit I drove the section which is now public road. At 2:13 I kept following the public road and drove parallel to the abandoned section, assuming I was still on the old Südschleife. The Nordschleife has a cutaway, that avoids the Karussel. The road continues straight after Klosteral, and the road surface switches from asphalt to grooved concrete, to account for the heavy incline, then rejoins the Nothern loop at Hoche Acht. This part was never raced on, rather it was used for testing, and for a brief time was open for Touristenfahrten - the latter was subsequently dropped in fear of a serious accident happening. Today the cutaway is still maintained, for use to practise the Karussel. The drivers take the banking, then at Hoche Acht, instead of turning right, they turn left onto the steep part going downhill to then rejoin the track after Klosteral.

    I visited Nurburgring in July 1970 and for 10 German Marks you got to drive two laps on the track which blessedly at that time included both the Nordschliefe and the Sudschleife, which I immediately took on my first lap of the course. Back then all ingress/egress of the track was done at the actual pits and it was up to you to control your car entering and exiting. At the time I didn't quite grasp the historical significance of driving the actual Sudschleife since they were still having club races there I believe. It was in good condition and very capable of hosting a race. I found it to be a bit unchallenging especially compared to what lay ahead in the Nordschleife, but memorable none the less. The 24h of Nürburgring would be even better with the Südschleife. Imagine them starting on the GP track, than at the Dunlop Kehre entering the SL, reenter the GP track at the Dunlop Kehre again, heading out for the NL and coming back to Start/Finish at the GP track.

    • @Circuitsofthepast

    • @Circuitsofthepast
      @Circuitsofthepast  Před 3 lety +1

      To be honoust I don't know. But I think not much. Perhaps for long distance races like the famous 24 hours. But in the past they held even longer races on the Nürburgring. It seems reasonable to me that they used the Gesamtstrecke for this.

      @@Circuitsofthepast Would have been one hell of a lap! You often hear people claim there are 150, 170, 190 or over 200 corners etc etc! on the nordschleife. But I think the higher estimates come from when the sudschleife was still in use as well perhaps. Numbers get thrown around easily but as it stands today there certainly aren't such high numbers of turns!

    • @Circuitsofthepast
