My favorite Depp movie. I feel like the reason why it got panned so hard by critics is because the movie only makes sense if you’ve been there. I’ve certainly dosed before and the movie just captures that whole experience of being fucked up better than any other movie I’ve seen.
It’s sad that most Americans know him as a caricature rather than the journalistic and literary genius he was. Best, most inventive, and hilarious fucking prose in English written journalism. HST invented an entire genre that went against every rule of journalism…. It’s now being taught in every journalism classroom across the nation. In person, HST was undoubtedly hilarious. I started with his book - Hell's Angels. I got into his later novels that were more a compendium of his endless notes and scribblings and they are fun reads. I recommend any of his works really, but pick up Hell's Angels and The Great Shark Hunt. Good stuff.

Fear and Loathing Campaign Trail '72 is a must read for anyone with any interest in the state of American politics and the inner and outer workings of a presidential primary season in the era of Nixon and Vietnam. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a classic of American literature. The Great Shark Hunt is an anthology of many of his articles for Rolling Stone. One of the greatest eulogies I ever read was Thompson's remarks on the death of Richard Nixon. Thompson was a giant.
Read Fear and Loathing man, I highly recommend it, I decided to read it after seeing the movie and it was worth it, you can visualize each situation and realize in each chapter how faithful the film was. And of course, there are many more details than the movie itself (srry for bad english)
