  • A walk around the English coastal town of Worthing in West Sussex with author Travis Elborough.

Our walk starts at Worthing Station and then heads down into the heart of the Town Centre. We are looking for sites associated with Jane Austen who stayed in Worthing in 1805 and used it as the setting for her unfinished novel Sanditon. This is based on one of the chapters in Travis Elborough's latest book The Writer's Journey (White Lion Publishing www.waterstones.com/book/the-.... The locations visited include: The Connaught Theatre, Stanford Cottage (where Jane Austen stayed in 1805), The Dome Cinema as featured in the 1987 film Wish You Were Here starring Emily Lloyd and Tom Bell, The Royal Arcade, Shelley House and Worthing Pier.

Well you said it was bracing John - certainly looked it!!
Worthing used to be known (locally at least) as gods waiting room, due to the older population, but is certainly younger now, due to people not being able to afford the prices of Brighton further along the coast.

I lived in Worthing for 2 years from 2017 to 2019 and before moving I was told there is nothing in Worthing. When I did live there I loved it and it grew on me. I'm visiting Worthing to meet friends this Christmas and can't wait to get back to the place where I've had lots of lovely memories. Thanks John for covering Worthing.

What a surprise to see you in Worthing, John! It was my home until I moved to New Zealand in 1972, and your video brought back many memories. In the 1960s I worked for several years as a photographer on the Worthing Gazette and got to know a lot of the more famous visitors and residents. I have been in Harold Pinter's home in Ambrose Place (when he was there) and met many of the actors who performed at the Connaught Theatre. (John Pertwee is one who always comes to mind, a lovely fellow with whom I enjoyed a conversation at the (terrible) Wimpy Bar across from the Pier). I lived in Bedford Row for a time, renting a whole floor of one of those once-grand houses for what would now be the price of a coffee. The Dome Cinema was always on the verge of closing, but has miraculously survived. It was popularly known at one time as the Fleapit! Broadwater, which you mentioned, now just part of Worthing, has a history of its own. My mother was born there in 1910, in South Farm Cottages, which still exist I think (certainly on my last visit some years ago). She worked at one time as a servant in Offington Hall, a very grand house which is long gone, although I believe the stables still exist and are used by a riding school. I loved the video and would happily have watched twice as much footage and I hope you might return there sometime.

There is something delightfully hypothetical about seaside resorts off season. The capricious shops are boarded up awaiting the return the next wave of tourists the necessities for survival as a town remain. No one needs a t-shirt in winter anyway.

Coincidentally, yesterday, I bought a copy of Travis Elborough's London Bridge in America from Skoob at The Brunswick. I'm forever hearing folk repeating, or denbunking, the myth of the tycoon who thought he was buying Tower Bridge, so I thought it would be good to get the true story in full. Just one chapter in so far, but very entertaining.

The pier is an elegant thing.. There is a damned fine piece of Deco architecture there for urgent preservation in Worthing. Nice one John, hope that fish and chips was done in beef dripping. Some names for you. The club on the end of the pier was called Rutherfords, then Lush, then Rutherfords II before being derelict for many years and becoming and art-deco restaurant (called Perch I think). Some of the roads to the north of Broadwater are named after Sanditon. In West Worthing, the literary theme continues with roads named after Chaucer, Wordsworth, Shakespear, Browning, Shelley, Byron and Tennyson

I’ve been living and working near Worthing for the last 13yrs. Come into the town most days. But I learnt some really interesting stuff about it from this video, so thank you for it.

Welcome to Worthing. Farmer George or King George's daughter Princess Amelia came to Worthing to convelsce because of TB.

Great Video. The club in the 90s at the end of the Pier was called Rutherfords. I worked there lots of great memories.

Lovely video, it seemed to have a very appropriate sepia wash from the light that day
