This has to be the most unique horror game I've seen yet. It's a secret virus.
Discord: / discord
IMSCARED is a pixelated horror game that intentionally messes with your head and puts files on your desktop. It's a unique take on "retro style" horror games. This one intentionally acts like a virus to spook you. So much so that it sometimes IS detected as a virus.

Back when this was first released there was no music, no main menu, no steam release, no explanation as to what it did. It was insane.
I loved this game for some reason when I was like 12. Something about it seemed so odd
something about no music can really bring out the creep factor. though i've always loved horror games that have really nice music; and then just the sudden stop. as something eerey just happened; and sure it could have been a jumpscare, but i just like the games that have a nice chilling factor then just outright being a cheap scare.
no explanation? like the old OLD OLD kings quest
@CallofDutyBlackOps28 I think the fear of silence mainly comes from you knowing whatever it is that's stalking you will most definitely hear you. Nothing to block the sound of your breathing or footsteps. Obviously the music doesn't play in-universe but it still has that coverage of the sounds for you. But that's just my theory.
Jumpscares are like salt to a meal. A little goes a long way, and can genuinely help in the setup and payoff of tension and suspense. But, like salt, its easy to overdo and ruin what you started with.
this is a :speaking_head: moment.

And yet, just like how some people really enjoy jumpscares, I just eat salt on it's own sometimes.
Also
Not all jump scares have to jump at you
Sometimes it can be a subtle reveal that slowly but surely become more noticeable… and it can be utterly terrifying …
Finally, someone else who gets that being startled and being scared are two very different things
I'm easily startled, but almost never scared.
I think a lot of horror buffs on the internet know the difference. At least from my experience.
Who doesn't know that?
@@fourstones1860 apparently 80% of horror game developers
@@bruninjkI think horror game devs do know, but they figured out that it’s way faster and cheaper to make asset flip games with occasional jump scares than it is to make a well-crafted, truly horrifying game. Lots of CZcamsrs and streamers will make content on games with jumpscares because it’s an easy way to provide entertaining content, which in turn, encourages their fans to buy the game even if it’s not that good.
It’s an incredibly easy way for devs to make money with as little effort as possible. Garten of Banban is the prime example for this. If CZcamsrs stop playing these games and casual gamers stopped buying them, you’d see a lot less of them.
Yeah, the story is really simple, just a sentient virus that loves you and wants to interact with you via stories and characters it makes up. The 2022 remake added an additional ending that extends the lore a little bit more by connecting it to future plans for the game in a sequel to the empty house you have after killing white face. It's a really meta game, mostly just a conversation with the player in a lot of ways. One of my all time favorites, whose mechanics would go on to be seen again in games like Doki Doki Literature Club and Undertale that also talk to the player instead of the character.
Damn, that story's kinda sad
Don't forget OneShot as well
another game that did this in spots was Off! i'm pretty sure the merchant and tutorial characters talk directly to the player at times. it's a neat idea!
Off is very much another good example of this idea! The intro of the game tells you that you're just you, the player, and you're in charge of the Batter and his quest, and it plays a lot with that idea, especially throughout the ending, by having you make decisions as you instead of for the Batter.
I haven't encountered OneShot! I'll have to check that one out too!
Honestly a much better description of the game's story than the endless theories people make about it. Go to the comment section of markiplier's playthrough to know what I mean
White Face is strangely sympathetic. It doesn't seem to intentionally harm you, with the crashes mostly being accidents. It just seems genuinely lonely. And if you give it the flower, it manages a rather cute, warm, honest smile with a heartfelt "I love you." If I played this game, I'd want to give the little guy his own folder, a few gigs to do whatever with.
according to a theory i heard white face is like the forced fusions in steven universe
This White Face added in game Spooky jumpscare mansion with name unnamed specimen.

it does have entities but they're not jumpscares and the game is just mostly creepy ambience
I think one of the reasons pixelated things are inherently scarier than realistic monsters is because with pixelated monsters your mind needs to actively fill in gaps left by the lack of details. Realistic monsters leave nothing to the imagination, and it makes them worse for it because you're more than capable of understanding it just at a glance. With a character like White Face you are forced to try to interpret what you're seeing instead of being able to look at it and go "Oh its a face" with no further thought about it.
it's like how good horror movies tend to not show the monsters until usually the end because nothing is scarier than what the viewer could imagine. making it low resolution and a representation of something keeps that fear intact while still having something that comes for you
I agree BUT it is not an inherent property of the pixelated style, it is something that works in any design that's not super HD and leaves room for the imagination, blurred images of monsters, retro filters like VHS, polygons in the style of silent hill, it works in all those styles.
And your mind always creates the worst it can when imagining horror things. That's why you ABSOLUTELY never want to see what's on the other side of a corner, or what's on the other side of the darkness. Because anything can come at you running from there or whatever. Our minds creates the horror.
@damsen978 Fnaf 4 does this amazingly, it does show you them, but your forced to confront them, or they will get you anyways (like opening a door, and not knowing if something is there.
This is why lowres style horror games are starting to make a comeback, or from the era of older playstation games.
Silent hill series, half life mod Cry of Fear, ps1 graphics slasher style games of Puppet Combo, the list goes on...
I have weird relationship with horrors. When I watch a playthrough, I don't get scared, at all, even sudden jumpscares don't quite get me.
But when I play ANY horror game by myself, I become really nervous, paranoid, and scared. I am a long time fnaf fan and when my friend suggested I should play the game in front of her, with her being close, I was still nervous, even though I've watched countless videos on AI, know the perfect tactic, it still scared the shit out of me and after a couple of nights I begged to stop.
I don't know how that works... Maybe I should play more horror games instead of watching them?
I have a similar reaction to horror games. I think it’s that when we watch someone else, we aren’t in any “danger”, but when we play them ourselves, we put ourselves in a more “dangerous” position, and thus comes the fear. Just a theory tho.
You, weird? I even more weird, I can see ghost and got uses to them but still sacred of playing horror game or something full emptiness. Perhaps when playing we barely had control that why is scary, basically we fell total hopeless.
Litterally me
This is EXACTLY what happens with me. Watching people play horror games make me feel pretty calm and happy, but I can't do it myself. I could barely even play Dishonored when weepers were nearby because they scared me so bad
i am exactly like this, i will be watching a horror game for fun then the moment i play it myself despite knowing every single thing there is to know about the game i will still just get scared as hell
I just really wanna see an actually scary game that starts off as a Jump-scare game.
Then about 1/3 of the way through it flips to becoming nightmare fuel.

I've spoken to the dev of this game a number of times due to the fanbase being relatively small. he's genuinely an extremely cool guy, he even said he wanted to map out an area based off of an image of my backyard (not specifically for Imscared, although he is actively still working on new content for it to this day more than a decade after its original release)
That's cute

This is awesome. Everyone who's grown up with computers has an innate fear of "viruses". I can remember them being nightmares even sometimes - it's this fear of losing control, being under the mercy of someone you cannot see, smell, touch or feel, even anticipate; and the fear of utter destruction. It's absolutely perfect to make a horror game with such elements. Bravo.
First time i see someone describe the same fear i have, just having scary stuff pop up on your screen constantly without being able to do anything about it
I've had nightmares where a stranger is trying to communicate with me through a virus on my computer... It's super creepy
Cyanimagomortiphobia describes the fear of bluescreens and Virocyberphobia the fear of malicious files. I have both and this game would be a pretty terrifying experience for me

If you’re looking for something with ambience, constant chills, an actual game with it and NO jump scares, Darkwood is my all time favourite horror game, and it is the embodiment of all of this, that game will stay in your head for a long time after you finish it.
Edit: looking further people talking about all the game breaking the 4th wall and messing with files, Darkwood may not be that kind of game, but it’s still amazing.
8:20 bro became submissive.
To me, a good horror game (or movie, whatever) isn't the one with the scariest jumpscare, but the one who plays with your mind, cranking up the paranoia, leaving you scared of anything.
That's why I recommend Skinamarink to every horror fan (it's a movie)
That's the magic of phycological horror, toying with your mind, being terrified even when there's no threat.its truly odd how how the smallest details make the biggest difference, but then again all phycology is odd.
Emesis blue?
I usually find it being like that due to each being a different _kind_ of scare.
Jumpscares? Shock-type, they make you jump and release a lot of tension.
Gore/scary images/descriptions? Disturbing horror. It makes you unsettled on prinicple, but it isn't really _scary,_ just makes you feel Ick.
But the stuff that creeps up on you, the stuff that makes you feel like there is something horrid you don't quite understand? _That's_ the strong stuff, the dread that good horror instills.
Psych horror is great :)
If you want an actually good horror game that doesn't break the 4th wall. "It Steals" is a good horror game. Although it might come across as another stereotypical "ohhh spooky monster hunting me down game". The execution is what absolutely sells it.
But to be honest, some people just don't like horror games no matter how well done they are and that's fine.
Yea for example some people hate all frictional studios and red barrels games for NO reason

Irish Syndrome (a puzzle game with horror elements) actually was the first game I played that messed with my computer's files, and it was released in 2008. To this day it is still a game I remember fondly for how immersed I got, checking for new files and for how files changed with every new milestone I managed to reach. It might not have the same impact as IMSCARED or DDLC today, but I would say that was probably one of the first well known indie games that messes with that concept.
Just so you know, THERE IS STILL MORE TO THIS GAME!!! they added more content after the game's ending hidden in the 2022 test build, which then by extension allows you to view even more hidden content within the base game itself. it's really cool, and honestly if you wanted to, could have it's own dedicated video if you ever wanted to cover it. just thought you should know.

We need more horror games that have the primary goal of just messing with you
no because then some idiot makes a back door to your computer like welcome to the game 2 or the blacklight club or what ever where if you try to beat the game before the devs want you to they mindcontrol your characters and steal all your xp (for blacklight club) in wttg the main dev just kills you if you get too far
i like this little genre of gaming that makes the game feel more alive by interacting with your outside of the game itself, like it gives the game some sort of sentience that it shouldn't have, to where it interacts with the player rather than the character you're playing as, one-shot and OFF are good examples (although both games have you play as a character that interacts with the world within the game, they both break the 4th wall in a way that makes the game feel like more than just a game, especially one-shot)
I love how he manages to still sound sarcastic yet serious while playing a horror game. Never fails to make me laugh
The "mess with your computer to make it seem like a virus" was actually pretty common amongst indie horror titles in the 2010s and this game was definitely not the first to do it. I remember thinking of Imscared as pretty bog standard and boring at the time because of it.
you wouldve played the gamejolt version, the full version on steam is fantastic
Can you give other examples?
@joris4235 I'm familiar with the full version. Haven't played it, but have watched let's plays. To be clear, I realized a while after playing the old version that imscared does do some interesting things and I was wrong to dismiss it so quickly.
@doromizu. See, the problem is that most of them were extremely short, free experiences found on game jolt or hidden away on some random website. They tended to blend together a lot, so I can't name many. I can at least say the first time I remember seeing it, though, which was the old My Little Pony horror game Luna Game from I think 2011. The trick there ended up so successful that the MLP fansite that initially popularized it thought it actually *was* a virus and deleted the post about it soon afterwards.
I think maybe Sonic.exe or one of the other many sonic creepypasta games from that period might have done it too, or maybe I'm just remembering the rumors of it being a virus. It was also a common theme amongst video game creepypastas at the time, like with Ben Drowned, Jvk1166z.esp, etc.
@@anosmibell6473 very reasonable response, you are right about it not pioneering that main idea.
Jumpscares are 100% overused, but they're really fun for trolling. Like putting in a jumpscare to relieve some tension only for the real horror to begin shortly after
As an explanation beforehand, I think of breaking the fifth wall as a work of fiction attempting to manifest itself in the real world; not so much acknowledging the audience as joining their world (like how the game doesn’t stay contained, but places files onto the player’s computer.) awesome.
Ambient music/soundscapes are seriously underrated parts of video games. Games like IMSCARED and F.E.A.R pretty much nail it perfectly. They add so much to the atmosphere and are usually pretty fun to listen to even when not playing the game.

I love this video!! The calmness of you matched with the scares from the game and the chaos of the editing is amazing! Please make more videos on horror games! I’ve watched it twice in one sitting!!
i remember playing this game back a few years ago, it's the only horror game that i've played where i genuinely felt disturbed to the point where i had to walk away from my PC after i was done playing
i love how once you open the game when it ends for real for real, it just plays the "your wrong, sulfuric acid!" scream but distorted
You realize the scream from the sulfuric acid meme… comes from this game right?
On that point about pixellated things being more horrifying than realistic ones...reminds me of when I'd play DOSBOX games with my dad as a kid. The music and graphics were so goddamn unsettling sometimes
That is partially because the lack of detail lets your mind wander and paint it FAR MORE HORRIFYINGLY than the artist probably ever intended. HD work tends to not leave much to the imagination so once you've seen it, you dont have reason to worry what else you cant have known
Horror games with constant jumpscares aren't fun, but there's at least one exception to this in my opinion, and that's Spooky's Jumpscare Mansion. Rather than trying to scare you with constant jumpscares, it's literal main focus is the jumpscares, and really add to the experience rather than subtract from it. And funnily enough, the game's bonus endless mode actually features White Face as one of the things you can encounter in the endless mode
I would like to add that I absolutely love the monsters from the LISA series, which originally was inspired by Yumi Nikki. While LISA isn't really a horror game, the Joy Mutants are some of the creepiest looking things I've ever seen in a game... and they are done with sprites. Dingaling, the creator of the series, just knew exactly how to use them to make them scary. They act as incredibly powerful and strange bosses that block progress, they often show up unexpectedly and can take out your party even if you felt overpowered five seconds ago, and there's several fantastic moments where you simply transition to the next screen - and they are there in all their paranoia inducing creepiness, ready to fight you with a boss theme that is closer to the SIlent Hill 1 final boss than it is a normal RPG boss theme.
I have thought about them for a literal decade because of how well he presented them in his game. Monsters created by overwhelming passion, incredibly memorable and unique.
Shout outs to my favorite indie dev, I am not being paid to tell you to check out the definitive version of his game - you just should.
He didn't even let me pay him for the definitive edition because I bought his game a lifetime ago, how dare he!
I think that pixelated monsters are scarier because it leaves more to your imagination, while something lifelike is already imagined out leaving nothing to your imagination.

Not a horor game, but ONESHOT also breaks the 4th wall, with it being self aware, speaking to YOU idrectly, placing files, and making you open multiple windows on your desktop to solve a puzzle. Would reccomend. Again, not a horor game, but it does send chills as you can only play the game once, normaly
yes!! the first time i played it i sobbed so hard i skipped class the next day (or maybe i was just sensitive at the time 💀)
My opinion:
Horror indie game developers think that jumpscares would scare ppl. Actually no. It only gives us surprise. Not fear. Tension is what gets the job done. Because it makes you feel like something is gonna happen to you. Now you can't build up tension by adding scary ass music or anything like that but by using the uncanny valley OR the fear of the unknown. It builds up the tension more because the less there are, the more that people are to believe that this type of stuff can happen. Well what if it's another type of horror game like a serial killer game or a monster game? You have to have an ambience. Like the fog at 6:49. When you have an ambience like foggy air or wind blowing it makes it a better experience and making it a little more realistic. Then the sound effects are what's next. You see when developers use sound effects they use more fictional sound effects. Say for example your making a Wendigo so you use Wendigo sounds or sounds that are supposed to sound like one. You have to use something like a kazoo or a keyboard then low pitch or high pitch it.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk
This is a great video & i can't express enough how epic it is that you've got such good subtitles

I'm so glad people are talking about this again. I remember playing the original back in 2013, and playing the steam version when it came out in 2016. It's a great game and a testament to how much potential horror games have
There's another game that is pretty similar to Imscared called "A Dark Place" It's also pixelated, but it messes with you computer a bit more than just adding files (changes your background) and you can even use your webcam for a part of the game (you don't have to though). There are more puzzles, it's a bit longer and (in my opinion) scarier.
as of its state when I saw it (that being Markiplier playing it) it felt rather shoehorned and frustrated me quite a bit, especially with the "white face but frog shaped" antagonist. but I don't know if it has or hasn't been updated since

You, LamWarp, made me get interested about this game. I still rewatch this video.
NO WAY
I was not expecting you to cover this game lol
It's one of my favorite horror games of all time, seriously, there's only a few games nowadays that can replicate the feeling I felt when playing IMSCARED
It's a timeless classic for me and I hope more people get to know this masterpiece with this video
( If you're reading this and never played IMSCARED I highly highly recommend it, trust me, it's a experience like no other )
4:24 *insert monika from doki doki literature club crying in the corner*
I really enjoy your style of let's play, haven't really seen this before. You get to the good stuff without a lot of filler footage, with enough silly goose moments to balance it out. good job :)
7:55 i thought there was a mosquito flying around me
4:14 undertalo jumpscare
i love when ppl play horror games and are just chill abt it. its annoying when the person is constantly trying to play up the spookiness but i can actually enjoy the game like this
i wouldve never watched this game without you playing it, you seem so calm and collected while also failing miserably
My power went out after he caught, horror at it's finest
There actually is another game that does that. It even requires other People to upload THEIR text files as a key to others. Within a small group that would be quite funny but you can literally just break immersion and download the required keys right away.
Can't remember what game it was though, we'll find out soon enough
I think it was called Mirror Layers!

two words: psychological horror.
This had me into this game. It is the type of games that actually get me nervous or uncomfortable, good job playing this :D
Just wanna say real quick- thanks for giving the whole video accurate subtitles. I have trouble hearing and understanding words sometimes, and subtitles really help me out there, so thank you for that.
i love this kind of horror game playthrough. no other bgm aside from the game, a commentary that keeping the viewer gets what's happening, no big edits, just pure content. subscribed. and looking for more horror playthrough.
0:30 British Foxy shook me to my core. I will not be able to sleep tonight /_ \
your commentary made this playthrough so much better thank you
bro these first 43 seconds of the video describes exactly why i don't usually like horror games
but everytime i explain that to my friends they Gigachadly just respond with "Are you scared bro? lol"
IMSCARED is an AWESOME game im glad this video exists, the creator is also a really nice person
4:36 a similar game that does this (to a much lesser extent, however utilises many other fourth wall breaking concepts) is OneShot. puts files in your Documents folder, your username is grabbed directly from your windows account name, etc.
sidenote: not a horror game
Oneshot mentioned 👍
The subtitles are a great addition. Thank you
This guy's commentary and edits make this horror game comedic

That is the most emotion i've ever heard in this man's voice.
I still remember when Lamwarp was completely emotionless
Thanks for posting this, I has been trying to find it off and on again for a 8ish years
Your nonchalant reactions make this so silly i love it
2:13 this is where the VPN ad ends
If you think about it, White Face is technically a Nextbot.
I played this game about 10 years ago when I tried loads of indie horror games with a friend. I gotta say out of all the games I still remember this one very fondly. It scared you in a way that had never been done before and still to this day is way ahead of it's time.
i loved how done u sound the whole time😭 literally like "ugh not this shit again"
You should try the remaster version of this game, it adds a whole new section that's a teaser for a sequel-ish new game
I tried this game, at the start I thought it was boring due to the amount of stuff that you needed to read/find but it ended up being really entertaining!
Had a blast playing it and I actually got hooked into it.
for some reason iam always scared of the player getting caught, than the jumpscare or the monster itself
