    After 2.5 years of continuous operation this clock had its first malfunction today. One note of the chimes quit working. Turned out the brass "tab" that connects the monofilament actuator to the hammer broke off where it was soldered. Easy fix, all good now. I'm actually surprised it ran this long without any mechanical problems!

    This is incredible. A steampunk Nixie version of the old chiming mantel clocks that were everywhere back in the day, but without the winding once a week! I wish I had the skills to build something like this.

    I love Westminster chime melody because the clock seems to pray for those who works hard with much risks to protect them against any danger. The clock prays for them at every quarter hour.

    Thank you! Those are Hermle chime rods and hammer assy that I bought for this project and then modded to suit my needs. This project was a "make it up as you go, based on available parts" thing - surprised it turned out as good as it did - will make another one some day using what I learned from this one.

    I am used to the Westminster chime timing of Big Ben/The great clock in London.

    • @sootikins
      @sootikins  Před 9 lety

      ***** We are talking about the same thing then: your "pause" is my "dotted half note". I notice that the chime doesn't sustain the sound for the entire dotted-half interval in the video, thus the apparent pause. In its present version (faster overall tempo) it sounds considerably better.
      There are a lot of variations of Westminster in use in all sorts of clocks with lots of little differences. But I have to agree that Big Ben is kind of like the "authoritative" version, in which case mine is "wrong".

      Start here with construction pix: eeberfest.net/gallery.php
      The clock part is a fairly standard Nixie clock design - microcontroller keeps time and oversees all other functions, high voltage driver chips are used to allow microcontroller outputs (5 volt) to drive the tubes (170 volt).
      The microcontroller operates the chimes by energizing solenoids that pull "strings" that raise the chime hammers. The lengths of the chime rods determine what notes they sound. Playing the Westminster tune is then simply a matter of programming the microcontroller to fire the right solenoids at the right times...

    Why is there a 2-3 second delay between each bar?

      ***** I'm not sure I understand the question. This is the version of the Westminster Quarters that is in 6/4 (not 5/4) time. Each 4-note phrase is three quarter notes and a dotted half. 1-2-3-456, 1-2-3-456, etc. My note durations are programmed correctly. I'll admit the overall tempo is a bit slow here, I've since speeded it up a little.
